Haha.I'll fall on the hand grenade...
It's a die, and thanks for the photo, JoCo. It looks like they dropped the patent and combined the model number with the size marking.Same script but a bit busier with the patent number and No OSP.
Very nice set. I was expecting you to post the 3/8 Vanadium ratchet that mysteriously ended early on Ebay!
That set wouldn't have had a 3/8 speeder in it Todd. That was found in the larger Master Deluxe set. No 3/8 extensions or universal in it either. Odd that it was pretty sparse in the 3/8 drive department.
A little pre long c but here are a couple c-97 ratchets
Looking forward to the video!
There is actually a 1/4" amber handle speeder. There is a handsaw as well. It seems like several items received this treatment; however, they weren't depicted in the Sears catalog.
Since you couldn't help me by loaning me yours, I had to find an alternative.
The condition looked outstanding.
There was a C-98 sold recently, but not at garage sale price. It seems a couple old round heads have surfaced lately.
Yes, it is. It would have been nice to have had access to particular pieces years ago. A lot of the wait had to do with acquisition not dredging up the history. There are several here on Garage Journal who have been very generous with donations, outright selling, or temporary loans.
The C-98 sold privately for $900 per the seller that divorced it from the socket set it was supposed to be associated with. Good thing the buyer didn't spend the extra money for the sockets/case, as it was incorrect.
Todd, did you find that set at an estate sale? I am curious if the seller was of a more affluent background.
I have an unreleased video I did specifically about the amber handled ratchets and their associated components in the old style of video. I could never find the toolbox that seems to be exclusive to the set.
As a buyer back in 1939-1942, you REALLY had to want the set, where the cost over similarly equipped tool sets was substantial. The price of the set continued to increase by 12-15% per YEAR for the few years the amble handled kits/sets were available. Saving up and/or waiting, in this case, was a bad idea.
If there is one thing that has shocked me about this hobby, it is what can be found. Craftsman C-Series found a C-98, a ratchet produced in extremely low volume, at a garage sale for a few bucks. Todd is definitely good at bringing unique things for us to see.
Thank you!

I thought that was the case when I saw the set on eBay, but it's nice to have that confirmed.

In my daily email from estatesales.net, I saw a listing for an auction with tools. A small pic with an amber handle barely peeking out was all I needed to put the event on the calendar. So, not an estate sale but an estate auction.
I must have missed that one. The one I saw was Jan. 29, sold for half that. Bargooon!
Yep, that is the one I was talking about.
The socket set that the C-98 came with was with the red style case. They were the ones that had fancy hinges.
Actually, 100% complete including all socket trays, with an extra 3/8 non-amber speeder. What the heck?[emoji15][emoji15] with one purchase, you snagged a nearly complete set. Most folks spend years trying to piece together a set. You **** majorly! Nice grab!
