They don't come up anywhere (estate sales, CL, flea markets, etc) very often, including right here on GJ. They're definitely scarce. I have one in a partial BE set (with a hinge handle and 5 sockets, all BE) listed for $40 on eBay right now, and I have turned down two offers of $35 for the set just on principle. Doesn't mean I'm not happy for Don. But it will take one showing up and selling for $15 every week for a few months straight on eBay before that is the new market value price in my opinion.

If you want to keep yourself up at night, search sold eBay listings or sold internet auction listings [emoji15]. For instance, I am looking for a craftsman heritage era 8 drawer lower roller and 10 drawer top chest. I see them selling for less than $100 in the Midwest in nice shape. Much of our hobby and great buys are just great timing and geographical location.

A few weeks ago, Jocosawdust contacted me about a FB Marketplace ad in his neck of the woods, as he knew I was looking for a set. And since he already possessed a set, he thought of me - for which I am truly grateful!

1939-42 Craftsman Deluxe socket set.

I have a couple odds & ends that I've found in the wild but never have I come across a set nearly as complete. The glaring omission from the set is the 1/4" socket set, of which I already have everything except a 1/4" drive amber hinge handle driver. The other sockets and extensions are easily filled in.

Thank you Scott for thinking of me and taking the time out of your busy schedule to pick up, package, and ship this beautiful set!

I'm breathing easier now that I know that thing made a successful trek across the continent!
Here's the back story to this: I about soiled myself when I saw this set while scrolling through MP. As we all know, nearly complete Deluxe sets are not something you commonly see while scrolling through MP. My first reaction was that I HAD to have it! Reality soon set in as I realized that A: I already had a complete Deluxe set in the box and B: I had already entered into an agreement to purchase a Craftsman 5198 bench vise, which is no small purchase. Wanting this set to go to somebody who appreciates pre-war Craftsman as much as I do, I naturally sent the link to Brian and offered to pick it up for him if the seller wouldn't ship. Several days went by with no answer from Brian and my brain started rationalizing getting this AND the 5198 (stupid idea but..hey). Fortunately, Brian contacted me the day before I was about to contact the seller myself. I'm glad it worked out the way it did! I enjoy collecting not only for the tools and machines but for the good sort of people I run across in the process.

The seller's name was Roy, a really nice guy. He said he remembered his father working on his car with the set when Roy was a kid. His Dad purchased this set new prior to leaving for the war. I asked Roy if there was a 1/4d set around and at first he said it didn't come with one. As I convinced him that it did indeed come with one, a light bulb came on and Roy asked me if it would have come in a "little blue metal box". I said "Yes"!!, hoping he could produce it. No luck though, Roy said he recalled seeing it when he and his brother were clearing out their Mother's house but had forgotten to pick it up. The property is long gone so..no luck there.

Anyhow...this has been a journey and I'm elated to see this set in the procession of someone that truly appreciates it!

Sincerely, you are a good man. Those are very difficult to find especially in that kind of condition. To let someone else have it is definitely an act of kindness that deserves recognition.

Brian, I am curious. What kind of video recording equipment do you have? Would you be up for making a brief video about your set and sending me a thumb drive of it? I can do the narration. Heck, I'd certainly be more than happy to send a good thumb drive with to and from shipping on my dime.

While I have come close to completing it myself, I fall into the same precipice that everyone else does: I am missing one or two things that are exclusive to the set (i.e. the toolbox or something silly like that).

Despite the insanity of the world, I'm back filming as we speak. Work has been truly killer, as I am a part of a team that is trying to fix the mess we find ourselves in. I just finished the "Pear Head" Craftsman ratchets of the 1940s hahaha.

I'm not THAT good! Had I not been on the precipice of dropping money on the bench vise that set would have been bookends with my other one! I may or may not have been sobbing as I lovingly wrapped each piece in bubble wrap!

I'd be happy to shoot some video. I have an Olympus OM-D E-M5 digital camera that can shoot 120 FPS at 16 Mp, and an extra 40-150 mm lens. But here's the rub - I barely know how to use the damn thing - though I'm a willing student.

I'll need a little (lot) coaching on what exactly you're looking for. Send me a PM and/or email and we can go from there.

Couple of Long C-moving-into-Heritage Left-Behind Eye Candy items from the flea market the other day.

I was sorely tempted by the Sears, Roebuck & Co outboard at $150 just because it would look classic on my skiff.

I'll have to scroll back to figure out why there's a gap in the lid of that 'lunchbox ' type toolbox, because I have only seen one of them before in person, but I am guessing it's because the removeable tray was missing and that's the space where the top of the tray handle fits?

The tray handle does fill that gap and also houses the lock cylinder. The tray in yours works the same way my 39-42 deluxe tool box works

Those round top lunch pail style boxes can go for a pretty penny. That one is a bit rough.

Lugz that long handle box you passed on was the smallest box of that type Sears offered and it only appears in the 46 catalog. The gap would indeed have been filled by the tray handle but no cylinder lock on that particular one. It had a unique two piece padlock hasp. Wise to wave that one off.

I have been down that missing tray road. Took me two years of obsessive searching to find an older sk toolchest tray. Best to fight the temptation.

Thanks for the clarification, JoCo. The low slung look is what attracted me, but the main pull was the little red devil on my left shoulder reminding me of one of my epic flea fails. I've told the story before. Thought I'd come back and talk a guy down from an already quite low price. Just because I can be a cheapskate at the wrong times. Even rubbed the badge a little free of crud for the guy who bought it. And it was Long C. But the little angel on my other shoulder whispering 'pass, you dope, you'll never find that tray,' prevailed.

That's exactly how I located my first 1939-42 deluxe socket set box - I saw the tray on a vendor's table with junk sockets for sale in it. But now that I have a (nearly) complete set that has never been separated from the original box, I have learned I was missing two removable socket trays from inside the lift-out tray. It seems every new find is a learning experience

This C series set was made by snap on for only a handful of years. Set included the sockets and extension and t handle. This size didn’t include a ratchet. The box and tools are stamped but it was a period modification so I can’t complain. Not much of the logo left but oh well. Most of the brown wrinkle paint is still present and no rust ! Set was made until 1935 when the catalog shows both snap on and new Britain or hinsdale made tools. This 10 PC set was 98 cents.
