Posted in toolbox thread but another one probably appreciated here. Pretty sure it’s a C series box. Grabbed it off marketplace today. The seller said it was sitting in a box for the last dozen years that he never bothered to open leftover from the previous homeowner.

Here is my latest acquisition. I put some of my items for display. I have had no luck identifying the age of this union made tool chest. Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you, Dan

Nice wooden machinist box! Obviously pre-war but beyond that, I'm not sure of the date. There's guys on here much more versed on the wooden boxes than I am. I've yet to even have a chance on one of those in my hunting grounds.

You're on it Outlaw. This is from the 43 Big Book. Sold in conjunction with the "fabricoid" covered plywood boxes. Same box shows in the 45 Big Book wearing a Heritage badge. $336.07 in todays dollars.

I saw an amber handling hack saw peaking out of a pile of rusty tools this weekend at a sale...I gingerly turned it over and checked the brand because I have seen some non craftsman branded ones.... Saw the brand and smiled. I asked how much ? $2 was the reply... needless to say it came home with me ! I haven't cleaned it up yet but was super stoked! Goes in my amber handle tool collection (not that it is very big but you get the point).:rocker:

The POS hacksaws I find--and I mean any brand--start at $4 and go up from there if they're not bent to hell. Congrats!!

Does anyone know how many variations there were with the C series tool box? I think I just got another one. But it’s slightly different than the one I just got. Has a center clasp.

While it's impossible to tell exactly what was going on with Sears that far back oob, I think you may be misspeaking when you use the term "C-series tool box". I've seen C-series midget sets found in the wild in three different style of clamshells (black, reddish brown and blue). That box without a center latch you posted a bit upthread (great find BTW) matches, if memory serves, the box AA displays their C-series set in. What we don't know is if they found that set in that box or if it was pieced together and placed in a blue prewar box. I'm guessing the box you're talking about now is like the one in my first picture (with the center latch). I'm building a BT/BE set in it. Looking at the catalogs (an imperfect research source but the best we've got), the earliest Craftsman carry boxes are described as having a black wrinkle finish (pic 2). I've got a black box just like the blue one I'm showing that I'm building my C-series set in (with a black wrinkle finish clamshell for the midget set). I wouldn't call it a C-series box per say. While I can't say for certain, my best guess is that the earliest Craftsman tool sets were placed in a variety of different boxes.

In case this screen saved catalog clip doesn't appear big enough, the box is described as black crackle finish and it has a center latch. It holds a C-series set.

Yet in the 34 Big Book, the C-series set is sold in a funky looking box with a cantilever tray in it.I wish I could figure out how to make these screen captures larger.

I see now JoCo. Yes I definitely was basing my assumption from the AA pics of the C set with that particular box. I keep forgetting the Sears stuff is a bit of a mishmash as far as makers and dates go...could I ask where you found the old catalog pic? My BE set will go nicely in there. I may try to build a C set as well if anyone has any extra pieces....? Thanks for the info!

No I've never seen that half cantilever box either but I sure would like to. I tend to look a LOT more closely at rusty old tool boxes these days. There's several oddball Craftsman boxes out there.

Smokes: Nice amber handled hacksaw. Congrats for stealing it!

That’s even less than I paid for my 2nd Craftsman box! He dropped the price from $25 since no one contacted him for a month. I’d have paid it.

I picked these up off of eBay simply because I had never seen them before. I've got many prewar chisels with wooden handles, but had never seen the acrylic (?) handled ones. Same markings (BP) as their wood handled cousins.

Finally found one of these that I didn't have to donate a kidney in order to bring it home. Not perfect but in pretty good shape for it's age. I'll try to find a bolster to replace the one missing from the bottom front corner and an original style pull for the cover but other than that, just Murphy's wipe down and run with it.

Thanks Outlaw. I've been trying to pin one of these down for some time now.

I'm referring to the metal corner reinforcements. I may be screwing up the nomenclature. This is my first wooden machinist chest. I've got some GJ homework to do on it.
