Restoring a vintage military 5 gallon gas can. Also got two spouts (we had another name for them). They need the compression gaskets and a lid gasket for the can. I think I can get them on the internet.

Thinking restoring it in USMC red with yellow letters. (MOGAS). If they were diesel, they were labled (DFUEL). We would say if you run out of gas, you need to go get some "MOGAS". LOL.
Era is WWII up through about the 1960s.

Best Regards
Herb

Herb, when we drove across the US in the mid-50s our travel trailer had no water storage so we carried a Jerry can that I thought was a cleaned-out gas can. Now I find out it was a Korean War Jerry can for water. It didn't have a screw cap or spout, just a lever lock large mouth lid that hinged out of the way when filling or pouring. As I recall it was lined with something that didn't rust. It was perfect for filling in Alaskan streams because the opening was big -- the less time spent standing in frigid water, the better. It was exactly like this one:

Thanks for the memory and I look forward to seeing what you do with yours.

LOL, for some reason I think that red will fit in well in your shop. Looks like it will be fun project.

Gerard

Thanks for looking. These cans were the real heavy duty deal. I plan to make mine nice, but use it for the mowers.

Thanks again!!

Best Regards

That looks like an 80s era jerry can. I remember when they came out, but we also had some plastic ones for water.

A true story on the kind I have:

Inspecting Officer: "Sergeant, are these cans washed out with kerosene and stored upside down at a forty five degree angle with the lids off?"

Sergeant: "Are they suposed to be?"

Inspecting Officer: "Yes".

Sergeant: "Well Sir, then they are."

Thanks for the visit Bob Great to have you come by!

Best Regards
Herb

HS: i've got a couple of these old cans that are full of used solvent that i picked up with a solvent washer a few years ago. are they very valuable cause i heard metal gas cans rust and therefore can't hold gas for your stuff after a while or is that just a rumor?

i know a lot of members use electrolysis to clean out the rust out of their old vintage gas tanks and is there something to put inside the tank to prevent rust in the future?

thanks for sharing!!

Restoring a Jerry can is something you don't see everyday! I have a couple older ones that I should get looking proper, as well.

I have seen rust on the bottom of the cans, but never inside one. It is possible if the can is left untended for sometime with water inside it. (See story in post 1738 above for proper storage of can--LOL)

In my looking on line for gaskets, I find people are wanting around $100.00 for one of these cans. They are getting pretty rare these days. So far I am not finding the compression gaskets I need.

Note: I would willingly trade this can and two spouts for a scrabby looking Wilton Bullet!)---LOL Lack of ownership/restoration of Wilton Bullet is the final exam for my "Board Certification as a Garage Journal Titled member. Well--- then there is the Senate Confirmation Hearing, but I am sure I can ace that one!!

Best Regards
Herb

Herb,

I peeked into your thread and got hooked. After reading the first 30 pages over 2 days, I skipped to the last 7 or so (since the new year). I can't make the time to marathon the remainder at the moment but it's on my list

I have to say your work in your shop is GREAT! Viewing the initial pics on the first page, I was thinking "Where is there to go from here? That's anybody's dream already!". The details and refinements just keep getting better and better. I'll make an effort to be a regular in here.

One question: How long have you been in this garage? It looked so well set up already when you started this thread, I have to assume you spent a good few years putting it together to that point? I can't dream of ever having mine sorted to such a level but the ideas I've picked up will make a huge improvement.

Hope to see plenty more!

Those are very humbling words spoken, THANK YOU!!

I started working on my little garage in 2012 when I fully retired. I have always had a shop in it. I decided I could make it homey and comfortable, so I chose what I wanted and set it up. It is nothing like some of the shops here, but it does everything I need.

Thanks for your very kind remarks, and I am glad you are enjoying the thread!

Best Regards
Herb

The MOGAS (MOWGAS in my case) can is done. I chose USMC colors to honor BuickFarmer and all other Marines on this site.
I also put one of my old Brigade Artillery Decals on it, as we supported Marines quite often.

HOOAH!!

Came out pretty well and I did find some new gaskets!

Best Regards
Herb

Herb. Where did you find the gaskets for the Jerry can? There are two different sizes, one for the transportation lid and one for the pouring spout.

Well done on the Jerry can Herb, it looks great. One of the benefits of having a Marine for a father was I was exposed to many colorful military sayings from his youth. Including the name of the spout I just wanted to see if you'd say it. LOL Keep after it and if I come across a nice Wilton I'll shoot you a line.

Herb: awesome looking shop pictures that is for certain!!

great job on the Jerry cans too.

i was ORGANIZING and found a few of these sitting lonely that i think i'm going to spiff up or let go so make your reservation or just email me your address. the red one might just work as is in your shop, but i'd bet with all your talent it might look a bit nicer with you spiffing it up. i think these are 3.5 inch wide jaws, but i think i have a 4 and 4.5 inch ones too.

cheers

I don't have the exact gaskets. I found the lid gasket in a hardware store, but I need to cut one from some black gasket material from an auto supply. A little soak in WD-40 made the compression gaskets work ok. This stuff is getting pretty rare.

Thanks for stopping in and Best Regards

Well done Herb. I've never thought about restoring this gas cans to a theme like that. Great idea and of course the final result is up to your usual high standards.

I had a lot of fun (and memories coming back) doing the gas can and spout. I will designate it as my mower fuel can, but of course it will get banged up in that role.

thank you for your kind remarks and I enjoy your coming by every time!!
