I'm curious about tool pricing. The local dealer that I've never had any dealings with wants just 10% off list price from Snap-On's website for about $4K-$5K worth of tools I want to buy at one time, I'm planning to pay cash or rather put it on a CC so he'll be paid right then, this seems like not much of a discount. What do you guys think? Does anyone in my area have a contact number for some other dealers? I don't mind driving a little bit to buy them. I know Snap-On has a locator, but it just came up with my local dealer. What about the Wilson or Rocky Mount,NC area? PM me please. I don't want to piss him off, but I think I should get a little better deal than this. I know there's about 40%-50% mark up on the cost from what I've know in the past.

They have a territory and in theory only one driver could sell to you in your territory. Now if you work in a different area you may be able to contact the driver in that territory and try to work a deal with him or her.

Did you mention it was gonna be a 5 grand cash deal? Or just say hey I want some tools can I get a discount? 5 grand to most drivers is a very good customer over a year time period, you gotta think that like roughly $100 truck payment weekly. I would imagine most would give a little better than 10% all at once but they do need to make money still.

Tell him 30% off catalog right now or you walk.
Get on the phone and call a couple auto dealerships a couple counties away and get the numbers of their Strap-Onn guys. Call them and get their email addresses.
Send your offers. Rural is better.Less victims for them to **** dry.Tell them you'll meet them wherever when your special order is delivered.

I would explain about the paying with cash and the amount you are going to buy and try to get a better percentage off. But.....be TACTFUL about it.

If he is locked in with a percentage off and won't bargain, you could try a different dealer, but don't say: so and so would only give me "x" amount off, what can you do? Be mum about what the other dealer would give you. Just ask and be polite.

I would imagine that a dealer that does 25-35 k a week will get you a better price than the one that sales 2-3k a week.

This is good advice. I deal with 2 truck dealers and an industrial rep. You don't want to mention one to the other.

Be sure to ask if your dealer has any of the items used, some dealers have a lot of like new, used inventory they don't carry on the truck.

As a rule of thumb, I've generally been able to get 15-20% off new on cash deals, 20-40% off used. Be patient and weigh your options. Cash is king. ;)

Which is it? These aren't the same to the driver, cash is king to them. ;)

He should have started the reduction at 15% across the board, and probably offered you more of a discount on certain specific items on top of that.

You're the one with the money, your bargaining position here is pretty good (if you really are paying cash), so my advice is start haggling him down and be prepared to walk away.

No dealer in his right mind is going to give you 30% off! the margin isn't even that high on most items if he's special ordering them for you. If they're on promo or left over from, that's a different story. If you walked on my truck and expected me to order you a list of stuff that's not on promo and sell for 30% off! I'd tell you to take your $5k and go f*ck yourself as I'd be losing money.

Now, if you came on with a list of stuff you wanted a deal on, that I could cross reference with up and coming promotions, I could potentially save you that 30%, but you'd have to wait until the items you want we're on promo, meaning you wouldn't get everything at once.

As has been debated many times here in the past, the dealers don't want cash. They'd rather a sale with payments. As far as CC being cash, don't forget that they lose the fees also.

Debit card, I could do cash I guess. I guess it depends on if he wants a paper trail, I want one for sure.

What about the Wilson or Rocky Mount,NC area?
It's further, but more worthwhile if you think about it. Drivers in your small town vs Rocky Mount, another small town, vs Wilson, a small-medium town are all going to do about the same business and have about the same amount of inventory and be able to do about the same deal for you.

Consider a trip to Ft Bragg, or the triangle. See what kind of options you have there. If you're part of a network of dealers or shops see what other guys are paying their driver before deciding. You also have the option of paying the student prices if you take a class, if what you want is within what they'd discount. I don't know how the math would work out depending on your local community college and the pricing structure SO would give you but it's worth looking into.

If I swipe my credit card on the truck it saves my guy money vs him running he card without swiping. If you build a relationship with a dealer you would be better off. You get a chance see if his service is good. Does he warranty tools or give you hard time. Some Snap-On guys only sell at list price. When the driver gets a better price from the company he can offer you a better price with the promos, IF the driver participates, which means buys into the promos.

I only pay full price for special orders. There are nice buy one get one deals sometimes buy one get two.

If you have to buy everything all at once ask about setting up a credit account with Snap-on. If you can get a rebate, it may be worth spending a little more to upgrade the rebate. Maybe you can get $1000, in rebate. Since you have the cash as long as you pay it off before 90 days, you do not pay any interest and you get to keep the rebate.

This would be besides negotiating the prices. Offers couple hundred less or ask him to throw something else in. Maybe a ratcheting screwdriver or light. Sometimes the promotional items are really nice, sometimes not.

Everything is negotiable but it had to be reasonable. Instead of a one time deal, I would think most drivers would rather have a long term customer that maintains good standing if given credit.

If you do not like the price then just get what you need and shop around. Some drivers do not care and think their **** is the best tasting stuff. Other drivers will work with you and go out of their way to help. Finding a good dealer should be step one. Like posted above use those techniques to find the right driver for you. Make it so you can meet him at a regular time and place.
If I need something right away I can always met my guy. Also the list idea is great. When a promo comes for something on my needs list, I get a call or text, and I get first dibs before the promo runs out.

Having a relationship with your driver is the most important thing, it is what makes the service side of Snap-On special. Authentic broken or missing gets replaced no questions. If you do not get that type of service then you may need to reevaluate your options. The tools really are great. List price is like at a car dealership, you can negotiate, you can trade in, and there are promotional deals. I really like the BOGOs. I have traded my free tool for something else. My guy knows I am all about getting a good deal.

As far as a paper trail my guy charges me one penny to keep track of the warranty on free stuff. Like a ratchet or something else that way he can go back and have the part number and series. If I break I call him, he looks it up and can deal will full replacement or parts.

Of course he could give you 30%. The question is does he want to, and furthermore will this discount bring in future revenues from this buyer.

I do it all the time to start out building relationships with customers. I gain more long term customers this way so the 30% I lose up front doesn't mean **** down the road when this person is spending thousands with me.

I have one of the greatest dealers. I get stuff warranties all the time. He just asks for the part number and throws it in the return box while giving me the replacement. Having a good relationship is key.

You might get a better deal if you finance through Snap on Credit, they often offer rebates based on a purchase amount, even if you plan on paying cash you are sometimes better off financing and paying off immediately. This way you get the rebate and don't pay any interest.

And you don't think that customer is going to expect 30% off next time? What about every Tom **** and Harry he spouts off to bragging about how he bought X for 30% off Retail. Based off my limited knowledge of tool trucks there just isn't enough markup in the dealer side to justify losing $1500 on the back end of a 5k dollar sale. It's one thing to show Your gratitude towards your customers by giving them first dibs on limited promotions or Hats, jackets etc.. But based off my experience 10% is a solid discount. I get it.. Everyone wants something for nothing... :rocker:

The only item that wasn't a promo that I'd expect and get more than 10% off is a toolbox. Even then, they have promos on those all the time as well. With my past and present drivers, the most id get discounted on non promo items is 10% or maybe even the sales tax (15%). Special order items, I'd expect to pay full retail but I've only ever special ordered one or 2 items in my life from the snap on guy.

I agree... 4500 bucks for 5K is good. 5K is not as much as it once was.

while i agree with you that you can't find it 50% off on ebay all day long, you CAN consistently find it 30% off. i actually think ebay is a great place to get snap on tools. As for the truck, it all depends on who your local rep is. As with many things in life, the right connections make a big difference.

Big part of being a valued customer on a tool truck is keeping your mouth shut about how much you really paid!

No Doubt.. 70% of Retail is very feasible on General Items, Some stuff still warrants A higher average.

Why the hell would a franchisee want to pay his bill and wait on Random Joe to pay his bill, a little at a time, while hoping he doesn't skip out and stiff him on the bill? I'm sure they get a kickback on financing through Corporate (at 20-29%), but again, hope they don't skip on the bill and require collection action.

So let's see... if OP has the money, he'd be special to buy on SO credit at payday loan rates... so let's just nix that. That leaves paid in full, or truck credit. Simple time value of money tells me if someone owes me money, I want as much as I can get as fast as I can get it. The credit card isn't exactly cash, but fees should be ~2-3%, and a buck or so swipe fee. The other advantage of cash is doing it off the books, which I haven't seen any dealer do on anything over $20.

I've gotten 40-50% off paying cash in full. My SO driver has told me what he claims his cost to be on stuff, and it's often 50% under list. I don't entirely trust him there, but I sure don't think he's understating his cost... he's slick, not retarded.

Plain and simple, the costs (time value of money), hassles (having to come to you, hope you're there, and hope you have money to collect payments), and risks of financing are written into MSRP. I'd expect something more like 20-30% for eliminating those and buying in bulk.

I know the trucks I get on down here. Will give you a screaming deal if you put the cash on the counter in front of them. But there's no reciept, no proof of purchase and no tax write off. It's also only on stuff that's been sitting on the truck or in his garage for awhile. I can't special order something and get a special price

I can almost guarantee you those deals were from leftover promo inventory or old truck stock, definitely not on special orders from the catalog like the OP wants. Like I said before, If the op is willing to be patient and play the game, chances are he can get everything at the price he wants, just has to wait until it's on promo.

I started to post about this on my phone, but it died, so I had to boot up.

Not using the Snap-On credit system to get the rebate is not smart. That is phrasing it in a friendly manner.

Hhhmmm... let me get this right. If I open a Snap-On credit account I can delay paying the cash, that I already have, up to 90 days. Now If I pay before the 90 days is up, I can still keep the rebate and pay no interest. (I just did this for a friend and got $1k on the rebate and my guy threw in extras that amounted to more than $1300 in savings, my Snap-On guy gave a better deal than my friend's.) Now to continue. So I can end up paying about 4k instead of 5k. Yeah that does not sound like a good deal. I should run as fast as I could from those Kool aide peddling Snap-On drivers, especially when I am looking to buy those same tools any way.:headscrat

That is Not a Accurate Statement, You MIGHT find on occasion stuff at 50% NEW, but not on Average or "All day Long".
you cannot necessarily fill your $5000 order today on ebay at 50% off, but if you chill out and be patient, in 3 months on ebay you most certainly can!

I recently made a list of ~$10,000 in Snap-On items I wanted to buy, and was able to fill it at 50% off or more discount for new items, all from ebay, took about 7 months, but keep in mind I was doing other things at the same time, so could have put it together sooner!

newly introduced, very popular items are the toughest to get at 50% or better off, but very doable, just be patient!

Half the time it's more expensive than list price to buy off ebay... Yeah there's some deals to be had but if you actually need tools waiting 6 months for one to come up isn't always convenient...

I whole heartedly disagree, I make a pretty penny of watching Ebay BIN listings Starting with Newly Listed and for the screaming deals you absolutely don't have time to be patient, I can't tell you how many times I've got to the checkout only to be hit with the message "Item no longer available" so I know I'm not the only one using this routine. I watch the BIN listings because the auction generally have enough time to allow people to bid appropriately, on occasion you can find some good deals via auctions but with the popularity of sniping programs it's more miss than hit.

I thought you were selling all your Snap-on stuff, and took a hissy fit over some used tools you couldn't warranty! Remember Shame on Snap-on! lmao.... Truck guys won't want to deal with you, especially for warranty. You were complaining why?

If they're offering a deal to use SO credit and you can pay it off before incurring interest, then rock on. But that doesn't mean the driver prefers you use a credit line, it means SO is offering a promo in the hopes it'll attract more people to buy and keep the note than people like you.

I don't honestly know how they work SO credit with regards to when the dealer has to pay his bill on the tools sold, when he gets "paid" for your payments, and who's on the hook for what if you default. But I don't see how it could be any more favorable than "I have all the money right now, and I order your tools and pay for them with some of your money a little later."

I don't know all the who gets what between Snap-On and the driver, but it was my Snap-On guy that offered this deal as the best that he could do.
