to many usb devices that need charging so I installed this

Does it do the high current (1.0A; standard USB is 0.5A) charge on Apple products ?

I have used the multiport devices but wanted to have a cleaner installation

I have a spot in kitchen where everyone charges phones and it is handy to have a built in 4 outlet usb charger

It can charge (up to 2.1 amp) all of the apple products including the ipad

I've seen those before, and that is a slick product. I wonder though, since they obviously have a built-in transformer, are they consuming power even when not charging something?

Yes power is going all the time but it will not cost you anything. Un-pluging things is a waste of time and a big joke. You will not save a dollar a year and it is not worth worring about. You would never know the difference on your power bill. The inviromentalist waco's started all that garbage about un-pluging. I never turn off my computer and for the past 60 years I have always left things pluged in.

The only time I worry about power is when there is a power outate or huge storm. If the power goes out I flip the 200 am breaker off so I don't get a power surge when the power kicks back in. I have had things blow with the surge. I forget what it was now but it can and will happen. I have a lightning rod on all my homes. Even in places that get little rain. I had the barn catch on fire from lightning and they had a lightning rod on each end.

I personaly don't have time to worry about what has power and what doesn't. I have a life. :shocking:

the only thing you have to watch for is ipad nee more current to charge unless in sleep mode

OK. Let's consider pilot lights. LED's typically pull 20 mA at 2 volts. That's .04 watts. Multiply by 8760 hours in a year = 350 watt-hours per year. Say you've got ten of 'em. That's 3.5 kWh per year. Electricity costs vary, but call it a dime per kWh. You're WASTING 35 cents worth of electricity every YEAR.

Is it worth the hassle of unplugging rather than just turning off? You decide.

The USB chargers that claim to have no parasitic load could easily have a mechanical switch turned on by plugging in the USB cord. Lots of audio jacks have switching functions.

I was not sure of that either. The user guide has some extra info on this:

IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT THIS USB CHARGER/TAMPER RESISTANT OUTLET:
The 2.1 Amp USB outlets on this USB Charger/Tamper Resistant Outlet are
optimized for use with certain types of devices such as iPad®. As a result, the USB outlets may not charge all models of all brands of your mobile devices. If any of your devices will not charge using the USB outlets, use the 15A-125V outlet and the AC adapter of your device for charging.
The two USB outlets are designed to charge two devices simultaneously. However, if you plug in two devices to charge simultaneously and their combined power requirements exceed the power capacity of the USB outlets, they will shut down to protect your devices. In that case, try charging each device by itself.

So looks like 2.1A total. This should charge an iPad even if it is on provided nothing else is plugged in.

We have been in our house for about 3 years, and the power bill has kept creeping higher and higher. I thought I had most of our light bulbs switched over to CFLs, and I tried to unplug things that weren't being used for extended periods of time. The sensor for our 3 outdoor lights was broken, which left them on all the time.

I got tired of paying money to the power company, so about 45 days ago, I replaced the remaining 25 bulbs or so with CFLs, and fixed the light sensor. I put power strips with true on / off switches on our home theater setup, bedroom TV setup, and drill charger / TV / radio / computer in the garage (and actually use these to turn the things off). I also have been a little careful with the A/C (but not a lot). My power usage went from 1850 kWh in July of 2011 to 1250 kWh in July of 2012 which was the hottest month on record, so my power bill dropped over $50 for the month of July.

Simply a status LED wont cost much, but most of these standby things get warm, and warmth indicates more than a tiny draw.

It does look cleaner, but I have 2 ipads, 2 iphones, and 2 blackberry. So All the 4 port ones I look at was not an option. Went with a 7 port hub to charge everything instead.
