Well, that actually went better than expected. The tech guy offered a solution to try and I am all for trying one more time. Basically he wants me to set my emergency temp to 45 and then turn the NEST off. This should keep things at the lower temp just like a regular thermostat, he also says it should still record data. If this is the case, then I can easily use this as my work around. I still have to wait until tomorrow to find out about the data recording. The phone app also sends me a message when my "safety temp" was used, I may have to turn that notification off if possible. I will say that on the app, it displays 45 degrees on the dial now instead of 50 like it was showing in ECO mode. Fingers crossed!

So it seems the best way for me to overcome this will be to set the original thermostat to 45 and remotely turn the NEST off, then when I want heat I can remotely turn the NEST back on. Someone must make a wireless enabled thermostat that will work down to 40 degrees, this is just silly.

Hey Strouty,

I have a nest at home and haven't experienced the same problems. That's said the two situations are not comparable.

Our temps don't drop as far in holland. My safety temp is set to 10c. It will go down that far and hold. Also being a half attached town house I get some heat from the neighbors. Eco is set to 15 and comfort 21. Even when freezing the house is well enough insulated to take almost a day and a half to drop to eco without any burn. Being residential we are mostly home once day and it never hits eco on those days.

Also consider that a slow burn to maintain a low temperature consistently may actually use less power / gas that a big fast burn every two days to get the temps back up.

I know this is the case for my home. Since the nest I am actually burning more hours that with the old Honeywell programmable thermostat. At the same time I am burning less gas. Our heaters here in Europe support variable burn through the open therm standard. This means the nest can turn up the heat ever so slightly every two hours when we are away to maintain 10c.

For a shop with longer away periods and colder temps I can see your problems coming into play.

Dennis from Denwoods garage uses and is very happy with the ecobee thermostats. I think your solution might be found there. His thread is a wealth of information on how to set them up. I'm sure if you shoot him a pm he'd help further. He's brought his work usage levels down to residential amounts. And it's a big shop.

Thanks Niels, I don't think I will spend anymore money this year on thermostats that make my head hurt, but it does appear that turning the thermostat off works for my purposes. By doing this, I essentially have a remote thermostat with data recording that will allow me to set temps to as low as I want. I will keep playing with it, but this seems to my solution. I am looking forward to having more data to compare, I need to set up a spreadsheet with outside temps, but that means I need a remote temperature monitor. I am thinking of setting up a raspberry pi or some other type of unit so I can monitor things in real time.

Strouty I feel you on the not spending more money. I stopped at the nest too when it comes to home automation end of last year.

My bank account needs to recover. I placed the nest just after a half home refurb and funds are low for a bit.

I hadn't thought of a rPi for home automation yet! Considering the price point it's a really good idea.

I'd also like to get a Vera edge hub at some point. That idea also came from denwood. It will allow me to tie in the nest with the hue lighting and apple HomeKit.

I could add a whole layer of automation like Geo fencing and thermostat on off to the nest which I currently can do. I could also add a sensor array for temps light etc the the setup. Using the hub will allow me to do it one step at a time which hopefully will stop my wallet from commuting suicide.

I'll probably use denwoods thread to tutor me along the way. He has taken home automation to a whole new level.

The NEST was set to Eco temps being automatic, apparently I have a ghost, it thinks someone was here around midnight the other night, so it turned the heat up for them. At least the ghost was warm.

I just got a call from my Snap On driver, we had discussed a deal last fall that I had forgotten about. Anyways he calls me today and asks if we are still good on the deal, because he is supposed to sign the paperwork this afternoon. After a bit of memory refreshing, I got re-excited!

Apparently he won the contract to replace 12 workstations at the local Mercedes dealership with new snap on ones. He thought of me because the old workstations were Lista. So it looks like (fingers crossed) that I will be buying all 12 workstations for low bucks, on top of that he is hoping to get the installation contract for the new stations and asked if I would want to help. Sounds like a win win situation to me, plus it will get my costs down even more! It won't happen for several weeks, as the new workstations will take time to build, but I can wait (I think).


These are the stations (one of twelve), not sure if the gray cabinets go with them or not, but I don't care, I will be paying less than $25 per drawer and I get the second cabinet as a bonus.

That will be a heck of a good deal if you get all those used Lista cabinets. They were probably well cared for too and not trashed. Hope it all happens. Congrats.

So I actually READ this entire thread, and it's been quite a journey. I finally get to the end and wanted to ask Strouty a few questions when I notice his photos aren't posting in the thread anymore. Then I look at his profile, and it says "BANNED"!

Does anyone know what happened?
