First camping trip of the season is over, and again, I’m thinking about racks for the Silverado. Roof rack, too high and I don’t care for my aftermarket options. Talking with my father the other day, he suggests doing 80/20 extrusion down the bedsides and then mount whatever you want. Hmmm?

I let that thought stew for a bit.
I've got a roll up bed cover, which I really like, so the rack crossbars need to allow 5 inches of clearance underneath. I really don’t need the adjustability of full bed rails for mounting, so thinking just brackets. Like, 5 inch tall aluminum C channel cut all fancy with a 6 foot crossbar of 80/20.
All to hold these Thule racks. Grabbed 3, but I’ve got a 4th coming. Here’s preliminary mock-up.

The Gary Fisher Sugar 4 project has been idle all summer. Finally made some progress getting her back together. Sadly, I need to chase some threads in the stem tomorrow at work. I don’t have any little metric tappies.

Looks great! What cassette/derailleur are you using? Being a rookie, I've struggled getting B-tension set on the 11-46t Shimano cassettes.

Shimano's setup instructions are usually pretty good and are the first thing I try. They are all on line at https://si.shimano.com. B screw can be a pain though as some frames have hangers that are outside Shimano's spec, and also it's hard sometimes to tell when you are moving it in the right direction.

I went with a cheap set off Aliexpress. LTWOO 1x11. 11 to 50 tooth.
Now that I’ve gone 9 speed 11 to 42 tooth on the Stumpjumper, I’m kinda regretting this whole 11 speed thing. The 50 tooth looks crazy, but I don’t know if it will be that useful. I don’t have an issue with the 9 speed gaps either.
This will be a fun test and comparison to the 1 by 9.

Haven’t shown these yet. Many years ago, when my now 8 and 10 year olds were really little my father saved these twins from the dump. My sister and I had similar ones as kids and loved them. Now my kiddos rock them at the campgrounds.
It’s a horrible pic, but whatever. They are Dyno’s in decent shape. I’m guessing late 90’s, but please chime in if you have any thoughts.

I posted those because this came along today. Aired up the tires, adjusted the brakes, and gave her a scrub. She’s got a dented tube, but that shouldn’t matter. It’s going to be dropped off at a camp friends later.

Those scooters were badass back in the day! I bet the Dyno's are rather collectible. I know Dyno BMX bikes are fetching a pretty penny these days.

Got the Gary all adjusted to move through the 1 by 11 cassette. I was concerned that she wasn’t going to shift onto that 50 tooth, but we’ve got her shifting smooth.
So, how do I keep the bare aluminum lookin good?

Well Slappy, the 11mm hex key came in today. First freehub I’ve ever pulled. Now to pull one off a 700c wheel I want to use and see if she fits.

Went on a freehub pulling adventure over the weekend. The one off the 700c wheel I want to use is… 10mm hex key. First clue. Then… it’s like the female version. I need the male version to lock in.
Order one? I’m not sure what to buy.

Freehubs are typically brand/model specific, and I think some are even axle size specific. If you go to order one you'll definitely need to know the brand (and hopefully model). I've been down this road with a few hubs myself.

Assuming the one on the right is off the wheel you want to use.....

Y30R98030 is an example 8/9/10 speed replacement with the same interface (it is listed normally as 8/9 speed but 10 also fits). You also need the fixing bolt as it is longer. Just make sure what you buy has the bolt and there are pics to make sure it looks the same, and of course 8/9/10 speed.... if you are lucky a LBS may have one on the shelf....

Good info. And Slappy, nice work on the part number. That one looks right.
I plan to continue to rip apart hubs as I come upon them to see what else we can learn. Eventually I’ll find a hub that fits.

Grabbed a cheap disc brake bike to toss parts onto this small ladies frame for my girl. Cut the threaded fork down about an inch and used the star nut poundy tool I bought.
Need to dig into my parts bins and remind myself what I got. Purge along the way.

Oh dear! This is really embarrassing.
Thank goodness we are all good friends here and would never share this publicly with the world.
Think I would have realized if I took it out for an actual ride not just in the yard?
Hilarious, thanks MilesV.
Now I need to get out to the shed and fix this monstrosity!

Haha I ride a manitou fork on my mtb and they all have the backwards crown on them. But they're supposed to be lol!

Should be a quick fix, loosen the stem boots and spin it around. Maybe reroute the front brake line

Took a break from mowing leaves to get a little bike time in.
Grabbed this RockRing off an early 90’s Rockadile. It’s got that vintage look I want for the 29er project. Anyone recognize it?

Got the bottom bracket in and the cranks on. Also had tossed that chunky stem on weeks ago. It’s got that hole through it for the cantilever brake cable to mount and position. I’m going to cut it down to drop it another inch.
Still haven’t come upon the right freehub.
Thinking very 90’s pink on the fork and stem, but unsure on the frame color scheme. Maybe try a fade?

Here’s the Rockhopper for my 10yo girl. Need to pull some links out of the chain, but she’s together.
The 1x combined with the internal cable setup really cleans up the look. Now I want the whole stable to go internal.

Great thread, bikes have been a lifetime mental and physical outlet for me.
90's bikes are vintage enough enough to be cool, but still ridable. I'm not really a collector, I've just hung on to stuff and built several 26" BMX style riders.
BMX is the ultimate youth sport...great exercise, teaches teaches mechanical skills, practice on your own schedule. Is that Chandler BMX? I started racing there in the late 70's, my son raced there as well 30+ years later.

Hey Jeff, That is Chandler BMX! Believe it or not, they started a full rebuild of the track this past Monday. Like you said, it's an amazing sport for kids. The best part is what you mentioned; practice when you want, race when you want. My daughter doesn't have the competitive drive to be a good racer, but she loves going to practice and clinic nights with the occasional race. We ride together on practice nights, which is priceless to me. I've already got a badass Micro Mini for my other daughter (4 years old) for when she starts riding. She will either have no interest, or be an absolute savage....time will tell. I haven't got any seat time for over a month as I quit riding leading up to the Baja 1000 in fear of hurting myself. Hopefully we'll get some practice in this week out at the Goodyear track. I'm looking forward to getting back at it as I was riding/racing twice a week. It's honestly the most fun "exercise" I've ever done. The memories we've had together are worth every penny so far.

Haha..didn't want to go to the BMX track so you wouldn't get hurt before the B1K..makes perfect sense. I didn't make it this year, but we had the top 10 overall and several class winners running our seat pads.

Chandler was great, lots of good memories of racing the Arizona Cup. I think its now the longest continuously running BMX track in the country...the ABA may have even started there. I hear the other Phx tracks are nice...keep it fun and you can do it forever.

I'll post some pics when I get a chance

I'm pretty sure 3 of the 4 drivers on our team used your pads to win 5u.....us poor navigators had to run stock pads!

Chandler is the 1st sanctioned track for USA BMX (formerly ABA). I'd love to see some of your old pics.

2021 was a big year for me and racing; I won my first BMX race and my first Baja 1000! :spit:

That is a banner year BigBlue!
Mines been solid. Looking forward to 22.
A buddy came upon this 99, I think, CDale Super V 700 minus wheels. The funky headshock was replaced and it went disc brake.
His plan was to clean it up and ride it, but it’s just not his thing. So, I bought it off him.
My stable needs a CDale. I’m more of a Trek Y frame guy, but the Super V is super cool.

Once I knew I was grabbing the CDale I started the hunt for a nice set of disc wheels. Grabbed these today. And tubeless, which I’ve never messed with. Going to switch the 9 speed to an 8 speed and bring it back to its 3 by 8 glory. The fork, aesthetically needs some help, but that’s for another thread.

I remember going to the bike shops in UT and CO back in the day and drooling over those Cannondale's! That era of mountain biking was incredible; that was my "glory days" of biking. I had my first legit bike at that time, a 1998 Schwinn S10.

Tubeless is a God send! More maintenance, but I've never had a flat on tubeless (Knock on wood). The only flat I've personally witnessed was due to a broken spoke.

Totally agree BigBlue! I can appreciate cool bikes of any era, but there is something that draws me in to that 90’s style. Bikes in the eighties had that standard tubing bike look. The 90’s introduced all this wild aluminum work. Today’s bikes are amazing, but share the same “successful” style. I see modern bikes from a distance and it could be anything.
Take the tubing work on the Super V. It’s so smooth and done so well, but wow, when you really think about it, it’s a mess. Different sizes flowing into each other. Flats. Rounds. It’s all over the place.
Reminds me of welding with my father on a plow frame for a garden tractor. He was planning to use all this stuff he had. Square tube, round tube, plate, angle. My like 12 year old self cringed and suggested we stick with similar styles of material.
