Building a 125 gallon revers flow smoker. Its intended to resemble a stationary steam engine when finished. I did get to use my Hypertherm 45xp that my Wife bought me for Christmas. :D

Is it going to have a bell stack ?

You know, like the old locomotives.

Very nice.

Got the fire box welded to the tank with help from the boys. Also welded in the baffle plate. Its slow going ,as I broke my elbow over Christmas. We did build a small trolley crane wich makes thing easier. 1/4 inch steel adds up quickly.

A couple questions for you..

How thick is the plate for the box?

Did you fab the latch? Are those parts forged or formed? Did you do it from plans?

Thanks

Its all 1/4" . The handle is from an old mill vise I fabbed the rest , dont have a forge but its on the list. I dont have plans but did get all my calculations for the cook chamber volume vs fire box size etc, from smokebuilder.com . They have a great calculator for reverse flow smokers. You just enter your tank size and a few other dimension and it does the rest. I did a lot of research before I started wich I am glad I did. For a good functioning smoker the calculations are critical.

Thats is awesome and I can only imagine what the finished weight will be. Are the meat doors going to be in the same riveted and banded fashion?

Yes same as fire box door. I have been collecting random steam punk stuff for a few months and looking forward to implementing some of my ideas. Found this cool Oliver elevator regulator with giant balls to the wall balls out balls. If you didnt know thats what that means:)
Ground the paint off the tag on the tank turnes out it was built in 1959 . Things were just made better back then.

Really cool build. I've built a couple smokers myself but nothing with as much detail as yours. I have a thread around here about a 30 gallon reverse flow build. That firebox is HUGE. I found that most online firebox calculators call for a much larger box than really needed. At least you'll have no issue keeping temps up.

So what are you doing for air intakes?

It will have 12 2" diameter holes , 5 per side and 2 in the door.

The fire box is 110% the size of the calculator as the bottom will have a 2" ash pane below the air vents . My thought was I can easily make it smaller internally rather than make it bigger.:)

It seems that I spend more time thinking than working. But I think I almost have it done in my head .

Still working on the front tank mount, as Sarah Palin would say drill baby drill. :D Mocked up the Oliver speed governor . This was my inspiration for the steam theme. This thing Is heavy , may need some lead ballast in my counter so it doesn't tip over.

Please note: the government says 139 ft per second is acceptable for a falling elevator . But at 140 ft per second the governor must kick in .
