Finaly getting my bolt storage closet together, still need trim around the door, paint inside, label all of the bins, and the most fun sort and fill the bolts, can u guess what will take the longest

I have been fortunate to be able to slowly acquire some nice used bolt bins. Wanted to make them mobile. Finally got around to that a few months ago.
Made a frame to put under the bins out of some 6" x 3" c channel and 2"x2" square tube. Tried to make the frame as close to the ground as possible so that it would fit under my garage cabinets.

Not sure if it's been mentioned, but what about those Hillshire Farms deli meat containers? I have tons of them, they stack nice, and can be labeled on the sides.

i picked up 3 of these red wurth bins for $50 & gave another $20 for the gray bin & they threw in the drawer set free since it was missing a couple drawers. all bought on craigslist. i should be set for bolt storage for a while.

i love those open bin storage but im my garage dust is a huge factor and after "designing" my first garage, i will never have anything open in my next one. HUGE PITA to keep clean..

abstamaria, i love that set up. i will probably switch to that in the future... my friend works at grainger so i can get the drawers alone for about 13 bucks each! but the frame that holds each bin is still costly =(

seller, that free cabinet is awesome, i have 2 similar types that i was planning to use for bolts, but work its way to be for tools and misc. i LOVE them.

The empty drawer spaces make for a great place to store service manuals, notebooks etc. You did well for 70 bucks!

Man I hope those don't ever fall over. Not only would it be quite the mess to clean up but I couldn't move fast enough to get out of the way.

I'm more of a plastic bin kind of guy. You can mount them to a wall or inside a cabinet then move a bin at a time to where you need them.

For big bolts I also use Kraft "green lid" Parmasean sprinkle cheese containers in a pinch.

But like above, I use sliding rack Plano bins for the most part. $5.95 for a deep or shallow Plano lift lid bin that will hold a ****-tonne of fastners (bins sourced at Walmart these days.)
And I prolly have close to 1/4 ton of metric fasteners stored around the home shop.
M5x0.8 up to M12x1.75 and some M14 odd and ends.

Only problem with the open bin/open bucket bolt storage system is dust and dirt getting in the bin.

OK - Digging this one back out. I finally built a rack similar to KCarGuy's, but it is 3 bays wide and 13 high. How would you guys hang this on a concrete wall? Can't decide whether to Tapcon it or use plastic insert anchors and screws.

HF and sears both have them but they are SUPER flimsy. My dad has some old sheetmetal ones that are very sturdy.

Anyone know where I can get some strong ones? I don't have THAT many fasteners, or use them often enough that I need open bins.

I bought one of those at Sears not knowing any better. Works great for electrical like wire nuts. I definitely wouldn't put anything heavy in it.

I have all Lista cabinets and am a BIG fan of their plastic boxes for storing nuts and bolts. They come in a variety of sizes including 3" x 3", 3" x 6", and 6" x 6" so mixing and matching them is very easy. I have instant visual inventory control and I can easily bring a few boxes of parts to the other side of my shop for a project.

Over the years I have used hang on bins, metal scoop cabinets, baby food jars, you name it and really like what I am doing now for hardware.

I picked up a nice card file at the Habitat thrift store. I am using it to organized small parts and components in my home bicycle workshop. I will be looking for another, as I have plenty of more components to get out of random boxes.

To those into bicycle stuff, to the right is my wheel truing stand, with various trays of oddball fasteners. Card file on the left of course, and in the middle, is my 1960s Huot top box and 1970s Cornwell roller cabinet (both Salvation Army finds).

fwiw; i found that in my card file 1/2 gallon milk cartons cut down to the right height fit perfectly and become "sub-bins" within each drawer which can be removed and taken to where i need them. they fit 3 wide by some number deep; right now i don't remember. when i cut down the milk cartons about 20 years ago i set up my wood cutting band saw to the right width (carton height) and cut them. there's probably a better way, but that worked well for me.

I needed something for smaller nuts and bolts, as well as electrical components...such as resistors, caps, etc... I've been looking for a nice metal setup, but, decided to make my own...

I used the last remnant of my bench build and bought a bunch of those plastic containers and came up with this....

The slides are 1/8" x 1 1/2" aluminum cut to length.....

probably the best thing I have seen is someone built a probably 3ft rectangle and split it in 2 nailed glass baby jar lids to the top and that was how he stored his nuts bolts screws cotter pins etc simple easy organized and design is only left to what you can think of

By far the best way to organize. I have 10 drawers of these and it's just so easy to find what your looking for. I have had every type of storage bin, tray, can you name it and this is by far the best. It costs money in cabinet space but time is money and this saves lots of time. How many times do you "buy an extra" and a year later you just know you have it but can't find it. These bins in a flat drawer let you find it easy.

As a rule I buy Nuts and Bolts in box's of 100 - 1000 depending on size. So I need to be able to fit that sort of qty in many different styles, lengths, threads etc.

I use plastic storage bins with my own mounting system that can be built to suit where you want to put them. I use 1"x3" pine with drop ceiling aluminum angle screwed to the top side of it. It can be cut to any length that you need and screwed to walls, the inside of cabnets, etc. It's inexpensive and works great.

These and, I bought a bunch of plastic tote things with drawers at yard sales for a buck a piece and just made a wooden frame on casters..........roll it out of the way when not in use.

I use a couple different ideas. I started out using old laundry detergent bottles. they actually work very well. they are very heavy plastic so nails and screws don't poke through, and they have a built in handle that makes them portable. I still use these for bulk nail and screw storage. and the best thing is they make my wife happy because she hates throwing anything away lol.

We're got slat wall bins, not a lot of sizes but the fit directly on to slat wall.

I am back at my hardware sorting. I am having real trouble labeling my containers. I just can't decide how detailed or broad the labels should be.

My brother has a bin that is labeled "ford bolts" and I think that is a great idea. I don't want to label things as broad as "large bolts" but I am not sure if I should just start that way for now and as I see a large quantity of one style then break that specific one out and start a new bin.

How are you guys handling the actual labeling?
