Re: Storeing Nuts and Bolts ?

Here is what I finally bit the bullet and bought, A Stanely Vidmar 13 drawer cabinet. It can with all of the dividers.

It's some of the best money I spent for the shop. It's amazon all the little containers of bolts, nuts, etc. that I had laying around and more amazon the time I spent searching for them.

Now just pull a drawer open and it's right in front of you.

I mounted 5" casters to make it easy to move when needed.

Re: Storeing Nuts and Bolts ?

I use Rousseau cabinets http://www.rousseaumetal.com/ that are made in Canada. These are quality cabinets that compete with Lista and Vidmar. Usually you can find a better deal on these used as they are not as well known and if your patient and don't mind searching auction sites you can get a good deal. I now have nine cabinets that bought from eBay and some local auctions. I paid more in shipping than I did for the cabinets. I have both drawer units and combination drawer and sliding shelve units.

Total cost for all nine including paint (I repainted them all) was just under $3200 with more than half of that was shipping cost. Please excuse the mess in the photos as I am re-arranging my "shop" and the low quality pics from my camera phone.

As a possible solution to your shelve question you can in some cases do an easy mod of Rousseau's shelves into Vidmar cabinets. You might search for those to see if they might be an option.

Re: Storeing Nuts and Bolts ?

I bought all my tilt out bins, red and black compartment cases at Big Lots.
The tilt out bins hold all screws and bolts from 3/8 to 1 1/2 inch and they are seperated by rows into 6s, 8s, & 10s. Also keep nuts for the bolts by size and shape.

The red cases are screws from 1 1/2 to 3 inch and each case is labled by type of head and drive. The black cases are bolts from 1 1/2 to 3 inches aslo sepereated by type (carriage, lag, square head, etc)

I like the cases because I can grab one case and have all the size variations at the project site.

The cases were $4 each and the tilt out bins were $4 to $6 depending on size. I have never seen them cheaper any where.

I also use some of the larger tilt out bins for storing hundreds of misc things e.g
Clips, electrical twist connectors, light plate screws, all kinds of wall anchors,
Etc.

The red pull out bins over the joiner are nails and they have a plastic cover over those bins to keep dust out.

I have a lot of saw dust generated so I wanted to keep dust out of my screw, bolts, & nails. This seemed to do the job at a very reasonable price.

I agree the frame looks weak. I have the wall mounted ones from NT and I really like them.

Here's mine,

I used the Akro bins and the wall mounted open organizers before, but became annoyed as they tended to collect whatever dust, dirt, sawdust or whatever else was floating around in the air. I have 4 just like these unused at this time due to a lack of floor and open wall space. I borrowed MP&C's photo, got mine at a body shop that was closing down, $100 for all four couldn't go wrong at that price.

Where did you get the red plastic bins from?

Re: Storeing Nuts and Bolts ?

One of yesterday's projects was to mount five 12" wide x 6" deep hardware cabinets under a 36" wide metal shelving unit. The back 3 cabinets are mounted to the wall and don't move. The front 2 cabinets role from side to side along a track. I made the track out of 2 peices of power strut screwed together back to back. I used glass shower door rollers for the cabinets. It works well. I just need to disassemble everything for painting and a general clean up. I'm sure everyone has seen this setup in hardware stores. I just decided to do it on a smaller scale.

Did you make this cabinet or was it boughten somewhere? I have a bunch of akro bins and made a wood shelf set up on top of one of my workbenches but when/if I get some more floor space I would love to build something like you did under the bench. Any details on the build or buy would be much appreciated! Nice looking set up!

Re: Storeing Nuts and Bolts ?

You guys have some pretty awesome storage solutions.

I almost bought one of the Stack-on cases with 20 drawers to hold some small parts, but instead picked up a hundred or so tiny ziplock bags at my local Ace Hardware. These work well for grouping small quantities of of fasteners. I put them in a cardboard box and can easily find what I need with minimal difficulty.

Sorry if I missed this earlier in the thread, but where are you guys buying the nuts and bolts? I have a decent storage solution but my collection of metric hardware has dwindled down. I'd love to buy in bulk (like a handful or more of each size) to make it easier.

If you check out my thread, it should answer your questions. Just basically, laid them out, took a measurement of the width that I needed, along with a height estimation and started to crunch the numbers.

If you have any question, just ask them in my thread. I generally check it out and answer anybodys questions they ask.

6daze, thank you.

For me it's auctions. I love going to auctions. Farm auctions, estate auctions, consignment auctions.

What they do around here is put all the farmers nuts and bolts into carboard flats the size of a beer case. They go cheap compared to what it would cost to buy them at a store.
Usualy less than $10 a flat.

Also, I have gotten into the habit of buying a box of hardware, even if I only need one or two pieces. If it's something I think I may need again.
Why drive to town for 1 washer or 1 bolt? Spend $5-$10 on a box and have some for next time.

I work construction and pick up a lot of stuff out of dumpsters and off the floors.
And when I jump something, I try to take it apart for the nuts and bolts if there are any.

Cheap hardware is all around you. Just gotta look for it.
Collecting hardware has become somewhat of a hobby for me.

+1 here. I restore old ag tractors, and the bolts have markings, depending on the manufacturer. If I want my tractor to be original and correct, I make sure the original style fasteners go back on. Many times this requires visiting tractor salvage yards, if the original bolt is missing or damaged. As I scrap old units I save all bolts before the casting go to the scrap yard.

I've even gotten to the point of picking up fasteners in parking lots. You never know if it might come in handy someday . . .

That sounds like a fun way to get tools and nuts/bolts, I will look into that. But I need pretty much metric exclusively, and I suspect most things I will find around here would be SAE. Plus I'd like to get a baseline set of metric nuts and bolts to get me started.

No idea where you're at, but most farm stores like Tractor Supply or Big R have bulk bolts at very reasonable prices.

You could also look up "fasteners" in a phone directory, whether book or online, for your area.

I too have a couple of old card files. I love these cabinets. All the hardware in one place, easy to access

I have the exact same card file cabinet. Found it on craigslist. I looked on there for over a year until a good one showed up and I jumped on it.

I made 200 bins for mine out of acrylic left over pieces from supplier. I just kept going back for the scraps until I had enough. They were just going to throw them out and I just said I would do it for them. They are the same size as the larger yellow bins in the photos above.

Here is what I did for now. I don't have a lot of space but crammed in as many of these bins as I could. The space is 6'x3.5' roughly. Bins are available at Home Depot or Lowes. Some day I will have the space and money to build a cabinet to keep these bins in. Something that will hang bins on the back side of the doors as well as in the cabinet.
