This might turn into a pennywise, pound foolish scenario once you factor in the price to rebuild your engine...:bounce:

All jokes aside, a lot of the folks over at the Bobistheoilguy.com forums have found the Supertech oil to be a very good oil. Spend a little time over there - the wealth of knowledge is amazing. They are very good at answering questions you might have.

Oil is the last thing I'm going to cheap out on... But then again, I have a severe aversion to rebuilding engines in my own vehicles.

Same here. I don't buy some no name brand oil. I do my homework and buy oil based on my findings. However... That doesn't mean I'm going to buy oil at the auto store when I can get the same thing half price somewhere else ;)

I mean shoot my filter costs almost as much as my oil does... Amsoil EA15k12. Good oil is great, but I don't want to lose the benefits because there is some misc particle floating around that's larger than my bearing tolerances

4.2qts / 5qt jug @ $25... $21 spent on oil, $18 on the filter

This man I agree with... I buy good stuff for my vehicles :dunno: OE (ACDelco) parts too. Some might say I'm getting hosed but then, my 20 year old truck is still runnin' down the road. Original engine, transmission (4L60E which I'm told by many is worthless :headscrat) and rear end... I think I might just keep doing what I'm doing

I run Pennzoil Ultra synthetic and my car loves it.

The Ultra Synthetic "Euro", available on Amazon for reasonable price, is even better. Look it up on BobIsTheOilGuy, specs are off the charts for both VOA and UOA.

Redline is also good stuff, use that in the older vehicles.

I've always been leary of Amsoil. They seem to rely more on anecdotal evidence than published, lab verified, facts.

You are correct, a UOA should be done beforehand and I should probably update my UOA from a year ago. I have a Honda J35, which is probably one of the easiest motors on oil since Honda designs motors with proper bearing sizes and clearances.

You all can nerd out about base stocks and such as much as you want, but there are many BITOG users taking the standard Mobil 1 to 10k and the M1EP to 15k, so I'm not in the minority here. If I could acquire Amsoil at better prices, I would consider them, but it's not really the case here (or I assume anywhere).

I agree. I buy my oil from WalMart, and do not think I will suffer any issues because I used Mobil1 0W-20 in my Outback or 5W-40 in my Golf. Maybe the base stocks aren't what they used to be, but I just don't see it being significant an impact to show up in the 3-5k change intervals I use. VW say the 5W40 is good for 10,000 miles in the Golf, so I'm way under that.

As for auto parts stores, still seems more expensive than walmart, and often the filters they include are not ones I'd like to use.

Same here, $22 and change for Mobil 1 at my local Walmart. The Pennzoil Ultra is a great oil but it seems to be harder to get. I run either Pennzoil Platinum or Mobil 1 on all my cars. There's recent threads in BITOG about purolator pureone filters with tears. People there seemed to recommend Fram Ultra for the filters for now. I personally stocked up on pureone filters and will just use them until they run out.
