Nice, but I think you're going to want to run another set of lights above the benches. Right now you've illuminated the room but whenever you're working on something on a bench, you'll be working in your own shadow. Awesome job so far!

Very good point there. I'm going to run a ledstrip on the bottom of the top shelf. It actually came in the mail today:thumbup:
I also was looking for a magnifier lamp for soldering and small work..

Thank you cash68:thumbup:

Ask me how I found out. :D

Yes I think you speak with voice of experience:beer:

Well let's get to the lighting later. Now it's time for drawers
(not underpants):bounce:

The drawers were pretty filthy and they had some old labeling and stickers on them. I removed the stickers with heat gun and cleaned them.

i-tdWpGk3-L.jpg

i-N8T9fhj-L.jpg

Four of these were in use by my sons and daughter, they were clean and had some pretty stickers:) I stole the drawers when kids were in school:bounce: (don't worry they have new ones)

i-8bJsLsC-L.jpg

i-vWWVCg5-L.jpg

i-FTBFqDX-L.jpg

Not even old, 21 years. Cleaned very nicely.

i-T6S97gw-L.jpg

i-6gr3WZr-L.jpg

i-7XT5tqb-L.jpg

i-6HwHGwF-L.jpg

Then I adjusted the face boards.

i-4sFBh5f-L.jpg

i-h48t5GX-L.jpg

i-9FNN4xx-L.jpg

i-B4Wg8qP-L.jpg

The black ones are adjustable, but white ones are not. Had to do some switching and the fitment came out pretty okay. Wish I had marked them before removing and mixing the pile of drawers:bounce:

Only problem with these is that they don't open all the way. They stay in about 4 inches and that is a bit annoying. I think that can be changed by modifying the slides, but then there's a risk of dropping the heavy ones on the floor.

With the drawers came bunch of dividers and these pencil trays. I think they are perfect for tool sorting. I washed them out of dirt and oil.

i-vPGDv6F-L.jpg

Couple of pins broken here and there, but those dividers are very tight, so they work great without pins. I did found more trays under the pile of tools.

I decided to wash all my storage bins, they were full of dust and oily fingerprints. I sorted nuts and bolts while the bins were soaking. Dirt came out easy.

i-FG2CmbV-L.jpg

That's me in the mirror. I installed a mirror on the top of the sink. It's nice to have a mirror in the shop, so you have someone to talk to:bounce:

i-DWmLgZr-L.jpg

I bought these fishing lure boxes and glued the dividers with Loctite super glue, great stuff.

I'm planning to store all my wood screws in these drawers. I think i'ts easier to find what you are looking for when you can see them all. Plenty of organizing to do but I like it.

Nice progress, i'm waiting for your updates

Organizing is quite relaxing, it's nice to see when your tools, supplies, etc. get proper storage place. And afterwards it really pays off, you find items easily and fast.

Thanks man:thumbup: I try to keep up. When my back says it's time for break it's time for Garage Journal:thumbup:
I agree. It speeds up your work a lot when you can find your tools and fasteners.

Great looking work space!

Thank you sir:thumbup:

I continued with cleaning all my tool hooks and gear that goes on to the begboard.

i-DBG4QjQ-L.jpg

i-wr59BfD-L.jpg

i-Z4x8wpD-L.jpg

Now when I don't have an office, I'm going to use my shop computer in the tool-area. I decided to save some bench space and mounted the screen on the wall. I bought this "arm" for it, so the screen can be moved out of the way.

i-wzdw5P3-L.jpg

i-PNSqtsF-L.jpg

i-T28GSfJ-L.jpg

I even read the instructions :bounce:

i-R9Vb3Ht-L.jpg

i-G4nRcJD-L.jpg

Pulled the monitor wires from the "channel" for clean look's and mounted some support on the wall for the "arm"

i-sD6LDxS-L.jpg

i-fJ5X57c-L.jpg

Those plastic covers were pretty crappy. They wouldn't stay secured when I turned the arm around, so I glued them in. Works great now.

Then I made some maintenance for my old machine. It was pretty dusty inside.

i-4BHRZXb-L.jpg

i-RwKspVT-L.jpg

i-ZNRXRnH-L.jpg

i-hQvNz2z-L.jpg

i-LL4sjsF-L.jpg

i-2dtzJHN-L.jpg

I placed the pc under the desk away from dust. With wireless keyboard and mouse it would be even cleaner setup. But the budget is small so it's good like this:thumbup:

I've never been much of a tool cleaner, dusting with air occasionally. So my tools were pretty sad looking.
Once I have a good start with the washing process I could clean my tools as well. I started with the Milwaukee stuff.

i-S6cRXBT-L.jpg

i-FZJL6sN-L.jpg

i-pnpD8R4-L.jpg

i-zzG6xQP-L.jpg

i-kPV7FtQ-L.jpg

i-gSFGDXV-L.jpg

I used hot water with cleaner and fine p1500 mirlon abrasive bad.

i-N2PGdB7-L.jpg

i-rPGzfFG-L.jpg

i-VXVqSpL-L.jpg

i-9XqknRf-L.jpg

i-nMjLw8W-L.jpg

I dried them with air and let them dry for a day on the bench. I was carefully and didn't get any water inside the power tools or batteries. They look almost like new:thumbup:

I mounted my Milwaukee collection on the pegboard.
How many hooks it takes to mount a circular saw on the wall. Answer is a lot:lol:

i-PqKHzKk-L.jpg

i-hRFsvkk-L.jpg

i-sPZCQ4X-L.jpg

i-DrVHV22-L.jpg

i-MW9gj2v-L.jpg

I mounted chargers on the wall to save some bench space.

i-8M89gTP-L.jpg

i-r9QTgLg-L.jpg

And there it is, I left space for more. I'm looking a deal for a multitool and a planer. I stacked all the boxes on the shelf.

i-gPbdzSf-L.jpg

I have bunch of these plastic storage boxes. Those fit perfectly between the shelf holders. Of course I planned that:bounce:

Very nice!! Great design work there:thumbup:

Milwaukee has serve me great. I was a Dewalt guy over 15 years. Changed the brad just for fun and I was running out of Dewalt battery life. My friend bought them all. Nothing bad to say about Dewalt or Milwaukee. Great stuff:thumbup:

I continued with the tool cleaning. It was pretty boring after a while, but the results were awesome. I have a lot of old tooling that I have found from yard sales and even trash bins. Years and years of grid came of nicely.

These over 30 years old Knipex pliers are a good example. I also glued all the loose handles and oiled the swivels.

Couple of years ago I bought tools from army-surplus sale. All great brands like Stahlwille, Bahco, Wera, Snap-on, Belzer and Facom. Tools were priced 2 to 3 Euros a piece. That was a score of a lifetime:)

My shopdog following the progress here:thumbup:

I fixed my ratcheting wrenches. These are pretty decent and cheap with a 10 years guarantee. I'm going to update better ones when these ones snap permanently.

New grease, and screws tightened with small amount of Loctite. I have some spare parts for the 3/8" one.

i-KBF4MvB-L.jpg

i-42MPbMk-L.jpg

I started installing other gear on the pegboard meanwhile the tools were soaking.

Adam Savage once said that tools go in drawer to die. So I try to fit them all on the pegboard. Well some have to go to die because i'm running out of wall space

i-Bfchbwj-L.jpg

i-bq4ScL3-L.jpg

i-kszPswV-L.jpg

Opened both of my Wellers and cleaned the dust inside. Oldies but goldies and working great. There's something about old tooling that inspires me.

I still have to clean some rusty tools with Evaporust.

Have a great day everyone:thumbup:

I was looking for a wire spool rack. Broom stick would do just fine but sometimes you need the one in the middle. If you are working with a car outside the shop or so..

Like these ones.
View media item 93809

View media item 93810

Lot of commercial models to pick from, starting from 4$ to over a 100$. I was looking trough my junk to make some racks and then it hit me.

Toilet paper holder :bounce: Just perfect, I went to my local hardware store and bought eight of cheap ones. 1,5$ piece  I had a couple already laying around.

Had to adjust those mounting holes a bit.

Works for tape rolls too. I guess this is an old trick but decided to share it as a reminder

Tools are starting to find their place on the pegboard. Going through a thinking process. What I need, where do I need it and how often I use it..
I placed my books, manuals and part catalogs on the top shelf. I'm going to place those in the man-cave someday.

I had some angle iron with perfect holes ready on them.

Came out okay. I think it's good to have two holes for screwdrivers so they stand up straight for easy access. Those Ikea knife magnets are perfect for workshop, pretty strong too.

Have a great weekend:thumbup:

Top shelf is a good place for cans and bottles. The clearance is 11" and I think there is a ISO-standard for paint cans because they fit perfectly

Top shelf is also good for keeping toxic stuff away from children.

I noticed that my PC setup is missing something.. Yes, a set of speakers.
I found my old ones connected to my sons PC. He hasn't noticed yet that they are gone:bounce: (he is using a headset)

I placed the woofer under the table. I think it looks clean when the wires are mostly hidden in the "channel"

I build a towel rack on the side of the sink, Place for sprayer cans also.

I made this air tool holder for the earlier shop-setup. It holds the tool from the connector so it's pretty universal. I fitted it between the rafters.

I have this old six drawer tool cart. I decided to clean it up. I found a bunch of tools under the bottom drawer

I cleaned it and greased the slides. There was a lot of grit on the wheels. Now I know what that does to freshly painted floors :eyecrazy:

Air belt sander did a fine job whit those. Metal chips sinks pretty deep on those polyurethane wheels.

I'm going to use the drawer for paint and bodywork supplies, sandpapers etc.

I proceeded to the wrench area. I want to separate the wrench area with something and found this from Bauhaus. (hardware store from Germany)

Bauhaus is located few kilometers away from my home and they have a way bigger selection of stuff than Finish hardware store.

i-28S9HT2-L.jpg

i-m97SdcZ-L.jpg

i-qMVJNNv-L.jpg

That is a good storage for random sockets. I placed all my socket trays on the top.

i-zCdRcVm-L.jpg

i-jKLXpQC-L.jpg

Well is that a perfect fit or what? Is this one of those oddly satisfying moments  Well I think I have a bit of OCD myself too:willy_nil

i-SpPP8m9-L.jpg

i-3J7H545-L.jpg

i-P2fn6tV-L.jpg

Anyway there was something wrong with my new purchase. The top bins could not be hang on the back rail. The gap was way too small. I think they mounted the wrong rail on the factory. or the bins were too big or something.

I fixed it with a new aluminium rail.

i-N2Kmcbs-L.jpg

i-46ndkTV-L.jpg

i-GzSHW5X-L.jpg

Now it works and there is room to remove the bins separately

Cool, I dig the 'can height' shelf along the top edge, I have been thinking about building something like that for my garage for a while now. Looks great. I was wondering if I could integrate some lighting into a shelf like that, kill two birds with one stone.

Thanks cash68  Yes you could. I thought that too, Then I figured that, if the lighting gets very hot, it will pop the paint cans open and that is a hazard situation.. Even a danger of fire there.

Maybe some kind of double layer shelf that has some room for air to circulate in the middle. If using spot lights or so..

I mounted a aluminium profile on the bottom of top shelf and glued a led stripe on it. Led lighting stays pretty cool and the aluminium helps led to cool down.

Here is my setup sneak peek photo.

i-fkn3jDW-XL.jpg

Not so good light for working but nice add. Very cool light for daydreaming and reading Garage Journal

very nice workshop! i just read your whole thread!

You mentioned you had restored old motorbikes and cars? do you have any photo's?

Do you plan on building or restoring any more cars in your garage space?

I like how neat and tidy everything is. I have the same mindframe!

Looking forward to updates!

After many configurations all the wrenches are on the wall, for now. I think this is a never ending story

I placed the random sockets on the bins. The trays are for metric ones. I think I have to order a imperial set too.

i-9ZZg4Tp-L.jpg

i-LhgL79W-L.jpg

i-wZwzk7r-L.jpg

Other tools going on the wall too. That was a massive washing operation. If I had to do it again, I would probably find a used dishwasher from the local craigslist.

Starting to look pretty good. I'm happy with the results. Going to do some adjusting if the tools are hard to get or totally in a wrong place

Thanks Rudi:thumbup:

Yes I have a lot pictures from my previous projects. Lately I've been restoring mainly machining tools. When I have my machining setup ready I can do parts for motorcycles and cars.

I have projects waiting some serious work. -78 Chevy 4x4 pickup, -87 HD FLH bagger project, -72 Mazda Luce Deluxe. Then I have an -38 Ardie, German 200cc 2-stroke motorcycle, That's going to be a tough one and missing many parts. Then I have a pile of 50cc from fifties and sixties.

There is some videos in my Youtube channel. -77 shovel racer that I made twelve years ago and my wife's Mazda project.

I've been reading your thread many times too. Great job:thumbup: Love the Z. My brother had one of those, -72 240Z. I still hate myself for not buying that thing when he sold it away. My first car was a Datsun 100A.

Your workshop is looking beautiful. I love it that you're taking your time to clean/restore and place each and every tool on the pegboard. I couldn't do that, it's too busy for my eyes lol, but I do appreciate a well sorted and tidy garage.

Say hello to Mika Hakkinen and the almighty Kimi Räikkönen for me :shocking:

Thank you  Yes it has been a lot of work but I kind of like it. I have never clean my tools and you can really see the difference. It's like those before and after restorations you see in Youtube. It indeed takes time to get use of all those colors. They were oily black before:lol:

I will tell to Mika and Kimi that you said Hey

I bought 2 meters of carpet. It 's used in hallways, offices etc. It is very cheap, 6$ per meter and the roll is about 4,6ft wide. I cut it in peaces and lined my metal drawers.
There was originally very thin sheet of foam on the drawers but that was pretty bad.

I bought plenty but after measuring the drawers I had to do some serious plans how to cut it :bounce:

Not much leftover. The carpet is 4mm thick and it has rubber coating on the bottom side.

I'm going to place my drill bits and milling cutters on these drawers. Without some lining they roll all over the drawer.

Thank you sir onTheCouch

If you search Oulu in the middle of the Finish map . I live just below Oulu.

I've been to Oulu a few times. I lived in Finland for a couple years in the early 90's. During that time I moved around a bit and lived in Kemi, Tampere, Imatra, Kerava, and Kuopio.

Kun asuin Suomessa, ma puhuin Suomea sujuvasti, mutta en ole puhunut Suomea pitkaan ikaan.

Anyway, Finland is a great country and I still miss sauna each week particularly with the added avanto experience.

Very nice:thumbup: Your Finnish is great, a lot better then my English:lol:

You have seen pretty much the whole diversity of Finish nature living so many places.
Very nice place to live here. The summer could be a bit longer.

I couldn't live without a sauna anymore. You have to build your own sauna:thumbup: And yes, swimming in wintertime is great for your health.

I started sorting the bits and twist drills. I have a few sets and it's strange how they seem to empty during the project:headscrat Fortunately I have some spare bits and drills.

I managed to get some sets full again, except the Milwaukee. I think I have to get a new set.
I dedicated two drawers for bits, if I have to buy some more

I filled four sets with good quality twist drills. One small drawer is pretty full with not so good ones.
The bad ones are for borrowing to the neighbor:bounce:

I filled few drawers with tools and supplies.

I still have to do some labeling on the drawers. I always pull open the wrong one:lol:

T-handle, you are living the dream: "A place for everything and everything in its place." I'm with you on the labeling. It seems my brain needs the printed reminders to reduce the number of missed guesses on drawer contents.
