But this isn't a deck forum. So what about the garage?

Well, it's been a busy week. I've been busy with the deck, busy with work stuff -- and was also recently contacted by two German magazines and an American one (Hot Rod -- calling a Porsche guy?) about the garage.

The first German one was pretty straightforward -- just a phone interview. The second one was scheduled for today. This one was going to be in person, so I just needed to clean out the garage.

Yesterday afternoon, after two different work meetings, it hit me that I still hadn't done that. I not only had a writer and photographer from the second German magazine coming in the morning, but also that crew from Hot Rod in the afternoon.

And here's what the garage looked like:

I was tired, but I got through it. By that evening, it was back to clean:

You can see a little of the deck cover to the right of the garage/office building.

The German guys were very nice. They got a lot of pictures of the garage, then also pictures of the car being driven up by Mulholland and some shots at rest in the hills above the city. What I saw through the viewfinder looked really great.

The Hot Rod shoot was a little more mysterious. Here was what I immediately saw in my mind when they contacted me:

But that's not how they saw it at all.

They made it clear they did not want the Porsche in the garage -- I assume because it doesn't fit their readership, which was fine. But when they showed up I saw that it was to make room for the model -- which I'd thought was possibly a model of car when they first said the word.

Nope. It's a pretty big operation. There were six or seven of them, and when I mentioned that the stereo usually blasted Springsteen, the photographer revealed that he'd shot two of Springsteen's album covers.

I'm still not quite clear on the concept for the article, other than that it's going to have four or five different garages featured. But the 'I never expected this to happen' part was that a young model has now been photographed posing in my garage.

I'm really not sure why, still. But there you go. :bounce:

Here are some pictures I took of the pictures being taken.

I think that the Hot Rod mag comments are kind of funny .... I would think that they would be all over your Porsche. Motor from a newer model year 911, upgraded suspension, modifications galore throughout the car ..... it's a hot rod. Plus the fact that they when they describe the owners of their feature cars, many times they mention that those owners also own Porsches and BMW's. And all they wanted to do was pose a model in the garage? I'm kinda disappointed in Hot Rod.

Typical HOT ROD MAG approach: the cheesier the better. They have to put girls in the article to get their readership to look. ;) I didn't see any tattoos, though....is HOT ROD toning things down a little??? :D

Jack,
You must write a book about your garage and I would have believed all of it except this last chapter.

I must be getting old but your place looks better with the black Porsche in it.

....sigh......

In any case, it was the highest number of females the shop has probably ever seen at one time. :)

A detail that surprised me: that photographer shot two Bruce Springsteen covers.

I finally put together a set of pictures of the deck and pergola going from Fred-Sanford-like mess to being a place my daughter can run around barefoot.

Here's a link to the thread.

And if you're not interested in all the in-between stuff, here's the yard in late February:

Interesting photo shoot proposed by Hot Rod - not. I don't know their demographic target audience, but retro high-top black Converse ?? But I Googled it and I guess they're probably Chuck Taylor high tops (not any better). Here's a link:
I didn't think Hot Rod was into "fashion", but having models (like in Lowrider magazine) may be what draws the readership (though Lowrider's are a bit more racy - I won't post a link to that - you can search it out yourself. I gave a subscription to our son about 10 years ago; we share a mailbox, so I see them every month. I even took him to a few LR shows in Chicago when he was in his late teens because he had the "bug" to create a lowrider out of our '64 Impala SS - it never happened, thank goodness!)

Jack, I love how the garage cleaned up. When things are organized, the clean-up goes a lot faster. I also love the new deck/pergola.

Well, it's funny. I just looked up one of the magazines I'm about to appear in -- and it's not Better Homes and Gardens.

Life is too short to spend much time judging anyone, in my book. And just as I'll take it with a smile that Hot Rod is going to hand some young blonde girl one of my angle grinders and hike up her skirt for a picture, I'll try to be just as amused that a magazine with these sorts of covers...

...has shown an interest in me and my car.

But they did, and the reporter was very polite and she had done her research and was just fine to talk to. I know I'll never be able to pull off the look that bearded guy has. But here's the picture I sent to them -- I'm not sure how it's going to fit in with the rest of the magazine.

But there you have it.

Should I have worn a fancy cap? :lol_hitti

Car guy content: those are the new Öhlins shocks I recently swapped in.

They're crazy for excluding the 911.

Dickies coveralls are great--wish hey had the sleeves articulated for OH work though. I've been thinking about cutting the seams on the underarms.

Jack, your organization and workmanship is an inspiration! How do you do all of that woodwork and metalwork in your garage yet keep it so clean? I imagine saw dust, metal filings and weld slag would wander into the most-inconvenient of places.

Actually I like the look of the photographer's assistant better :)

Agreed! Amazing how women that are really beautiful are often over-shadowed by perceived beauty.

Jack,

All this talk of Hotrod and other magazine's interest in your garage got me thinking. You realize if you ever decide to do a full on refurbishment of your Jeep there are a whole cadre of 4x4 and Offroader magazines that will come calling?

Now, if we could just get you to build a lowrider, you'd have the entire automotive spectrum covered, lol.

If he adds a Diesel somehow then it will be covered.

Jack when can we expect to see this magazine ? I'd like to know so I can look for it.

And then if he ever decided to get a bike... :shocking: The 12-Gauge Garage could be in EVERY magazine on the rack! (BTW, do you cook?)

Congrats, Jack. Your workmanship deserves this attention!

Yes, it's a Ridgid 6-1/2" 18V circular saw I got second-hand on ebay, with a Freud Diablo D0648F 6-1/2" x 48-Tooth Steel Demon blade that cost me $30 new, also on Ebay.

Great stuff, Jack.

The deck is beautiful! That's going to be a great place for the family for years to come.

The Hot Rod mag comments are great. My first reaction to seeing the models was "I like the assistant better" and thought that I was crazy. But it looks like we're all in agreement there. Maybe she's reading this?

And Jack, let me know if you need me to translate your future German magazine feature.
