No vote to white and red on that tool box. Either all gray as original or gray with red. I was going to also vote to put things lower that you use most often thinking the grinders. Also heavier things lower to make easier to get off shelf but, it all depends on how often you access those bins and contents.

You do cause me to aske a separate question. Your belt sander looks like a Craftsman? If so, how do you like it and do you have belt on it for metal or use only for wood? I keep looking at those 4" Craftsman's for sale used but always change my mind. I would like one mostly for metal work but don't know their durability? Hoping you have some first hand testimony.

The belt sander is a Ryobi from HD. I got it thinking I could work metal with it. It's ok and gets job done but rpm isn't what I would like it to be. It sure beat building one but now with 4 grinders I still might build the grinder sander. The small 1 x 30 is faster at 3450 rpm while 4 x 36 is like 1725 iirc. I'll check tonight.

I think that whatever you use/access more should be on the lower shelf. Much faster than getting the ladder out every time.
For the machinest chest, I think the best option is to ship it to me! But seriously, keeping it original, grey on grey does look good.
thanks again for the help on my garage.
Bob

No problem with helping you on your place. I really enjoy it and seem to have a knack for it. Although, I can't seem to finish my own place for life of me. LOL. I guess I could be done if I haven't change things a million times. LOL

My 2 cents.
Refurb the the first box, sell it possibly. Keep the matching three. As far as the shelves, it does make sense to move the grinders lower. Have you thought about shorting top shelf and stacking all the yellow bins vertically.

I'm thinking that also on the boxes. Keep 2 Crown and 1 Kennedy. Right now too much other stuff has to be done. So I'll put the 26 to the side for timing being. Not understanding shelf idea fully. All my top shelves are 17 1/2 to 18 inches off the ceiling except for the one over the harbor freight bench which for some reason is 18 1/2. I kept the top shelves all at the same height so if I ever want to move stuff around the all those shelves would be the same size and same height off the ceiling. I thought about raising the top shelf on the Craftsman bench A few inches maybe 1 to 2 so I can stack two bins on the next shelf down but for me the move the top shelf I have their first remove the little shelf above the bench then the second shelf and then finally the top shelf I just don't know if I'm in the mood to do that work verse reward. LOL.

I had few debt issues over the years. I got out of the hole and cut the credit cards up. I live cash poor now but only people I own anything to is the mortgage company. Once wife get a good paying job I know we will be living better but it was really rough for a while. I bought my house when market was high and now is worth half of what I bought it for. I could have easily just told the mortgage company to take the house. I didn't cause I took 20k out of 401k to by my house. I knew how hard i worked to put that money in there I couldn't just walk away even through I would have been better off in long run. We love the neighborhood and this house so hopefully dlcwent will send me fat check so I can pay off the house when he hits the lottery. LOL.

Man I would love to be debt free. One hard time got me into some credit card debt that is haunting me. One day it will be gone. I wish I didn't buy my house right before the market crashed. Oh well.

Yep I say same thing. Love house, love neighborhood, and it's house we wanted. Just ended up with a bad deal cause the market. I agree it will get better down the road. At this point I would like to break even on house and anything more would be awesome.

The 5 Stitches Garage 20 x 22 in FL

I've been tackling a project for about a week now and that's a total garage reorganization. For years I had stuff here there and anywhere it could fit. When I got new box I decided to group tasks better than I once did. Here's the Craftsman wall currently.
350cbc097fa56a591f40de562a239c24.jpg
From left to right.
The big cabinet holds power tools.

Above it is small table saw and both chop saws.

The top chest is tapes, epoxies , zip ties along those lines.

The middle chest is all drillpress related stuff and any type drill bits.

The bottom roller is my project cart.
Knives, awl, scrapers, putty knives, scissors, measuring, squares stable guns, hand saws, etc.

Top shelf from chop saw to interior door is all fasteners. I need to go get 5 more yellow bins. 4 big bins will be for bigger stuff.

Middle shelf is all bench powered tools grinders and sanders. I got to make plates for them. Putting them here made sense. Easier to pull up and down to use and better use of shelf overall.

Bottom shelf is Drill Doctor, Dewalt Chargers and free space for tools.

Pegboard will remain empty but hooks on small shelf at arms reach to use when needed during a project to stay clean and organized.

Bench will have DP and one vise with that vise removable if needed.

Left bottom roller is anything sanding or polishing related. Bottom area holds belt and hand sanders.

Middle bottom is grinding and filing. Files, hand held grinders and bottom holds all bench grinder discs and grinder related stuff.

Right bottom roller. This is a special roller cause it's the first vintage craftsman. This cabinet hold my vises. The big vise bolted down wouldn't fit after plate in bottom area so it's my everyday vise with my Reed and Prentiss in bottom.

Area to side is for future project but besides sorting nuts and bolts this wall iis all sorted and reorganized front to back and from floor to ceiling.

b51800443d08c36921f6eef99798ba63.jpg
Corner area. Sorted but ready no changes besides finned cabinet repurposed for paint.

6588fd888cf2963f75da8ed69d88de24.jpg
Top shelf mainly got Hitachi compressor moved. It's too heavy to lift from there. Porter cable is lite so is stays. Tools boxes, speakers and charger. All machinist boxes resorted and rearranged according to purpose. No machinist tools in them.

Left one is special items to me.

Middle is tv/stereo remotes, AV cables cameras and chargers.

Right turns into working box. Note pads, paint pens, markers, pencils maglights and small led lights and reading and safety glasses.

HF boxes got cleaned up and stuff moved around. All hand tools and related in these boxes.

b900e00eefe761f4c1b505c9901030d2.jpg
Top shelf resorted and got all small battery chargers in red bins. Moving stuff around allowed better use of space and more uniform look. Moving stuff around allowed me to have buckets I use frequently in front and other items stored behind them. LOL. 26 in machinist chest hiding behind buckets.
2bc709812a4702715bbca1d8268f0c5c.jpg
Cabinets resorted with left all fluids and right being all cleaning.
Bottom roller hold everything but helmet for welding, including soldering, propane torches, gloves and every clamp I own.
Next is mig cart and torch cart. Still working on them and the lonely ridge and above is stool and thinkIng jaw horse. TRUST ME I know I let this go but soon I will do something about ridge.

And storage wall is constant project but I'm thinning it down. Top shelf, hanging cords, lawn equipment resorted and cleaned up. Green bins need another going through but that's a constant thing anyway.

Loooonoooong post. Feels real good even though its doesn't show in the pic the true amount of work that was done. I about emptied every area and redid it. I've also need checking attic. It's a little hideaway for store stuff I found I thought I would keep. Looking to see if I can work it in to garage or if not going bye bye.

It's a good slog doing a big reorg like that. Definitely a beer worthy exercise

The craftsman bench looks good even with the tools out. Have you thought of painting the bottom edge of that bench (looks like 3"x2" frame) craftsman grey and maybe keep an eye out for a strip of aluminium to edge the ply top with to tie it together ?

Cheers Grumblebum.

Thanks, [emoji482] I just haven't got around to painting just yet. I do things backwards sort of speak. I build, use, make changes if needed, and then make it pretty. I got a piece of hard board for the top waiting for me to finish any holes that need to be made.

Wow! Lots of work done recently. It's allowed you to make some improvements in each area. While I hate taking the time for such a thorough garage re-inspection I admit it does help to refresh your brain as to what exactly is in every bin and box (or bucket). And gives you that chance to re-evaluate if still worth keeping.
Good job keeping your place organized and I'm sure you'll benefit in days to come.

I agree with Grumblebum, that's definitely worth a cold beer.

Thanks Craptain. I agree I might be too picky about thing. Call it OCD, **** but I've always wanted things symmetrical or at least pleasing to the eye. Even if things are organized but colors all over the place in bothers me. I have seen your shop and it's a working shop just like my FIL garage. I can go to a machine and start working right away. I really like that but doesn't work in my place. By time I get table set up and machine down I would be done at my FIL place. I have so much stuff that being this organized is a given to fit both cars in here and my loads of stuff.

Thank you, Ive been saying I'm going to do it for some time on here. I finally decided to do it. I get the feeling like when you clean a closet out. You might not have gotten rid of much but you feel alot better about it. I haven't been able to put vehicles back in for 2 weeks between carts and going through garage. Hopefully by end of weekend I can.

<cough cough> Looking at your pictures it appears you have TWO Craftsman Block Grinders. Now, I have to ask if you think that is fair? You having two of those and I having none of those---LOL. Maybe I am wrong and was having too many Killian's and am seeing double? I knew about the one you showed on your thread, and did I miss you getting another, or were you too ashamed of your self to show another one? LOL---just kidding!!!

Didn't I show both? I thought I did? Hey, I have only 2 but bagged has a wall of them. I don't think that's fair at all. LOL. Maybe we should take road trip to visit him and take a few to "test" out. LOL

Re: My "Shop"

Well tonight I did the most dreaded task in garage history which is sorting fasteners. I was going well going out to garage each week and putting hardware away. I don't know when I stopped doing that but it got WAY out of control. I had this bin full to the top with STUFF.
843803036ca6b6e769241ac37a690a0f.jpg
I decided to do a preliminary sort to the madness.

This was all in the bin. HOLY ****

I feel for you on sorting hardware, I have quite a few quart ziplock bags full of nuts and bolt, SAE and Metric, course and fine thread. Oh and some of them have buggered up threads, I feel like I'm fighting a loosing battle, but slowly narrowing it down. Good luck on the reorganization.

I did that same job a few months ago there taumac soon after joining GJ. Persevere and push through it, it's a real PITA. End result is so much better not wasting an hour looking for a screw or bolt etc.

I went through the buckets of nuts and bolts and things that never get put back in there place a couple of months ago. You are right about the "dreaded" shop task. I swore that will never happen again. but I see it has already started again. I should be down there right now instead of posting this. Oh well, maybe later. It does make you fell good when it's all cleaned up and in its place doesn't it?:headscrat

I wish you the best on sorting hardware. It's a never-ending battle with only a small reward -- not having to go to the store to buy hardware when you're in the middle of a project. I start out with one plastic shoebox full of miscellaneous hardware. I usually have half a dozen boxes full but more than a shoebox full is too overpowering to even start.
Sorting%201_zpsixqieog7.jpg

I bought a 600 count package of Dixie 3-ounce cups years ago when I was caring for my mother. They help me sort the small stuff. When I'm all done sorting I take the shoebox to the shed to merge them with the storage already there.

If you're like me and not careful when you set the shoebox down, the sorted hardware can get un-sorted, which is why I only do one shoebox at a time.
Sorting%202_zpsxzokgmwz.jpg

I put the small stuff in these cheap bins (there's two more 60-drawer bins to the left.
Sorting%203_zpszzjo4adr.jpg

My shed/workshop is a dirty, dusty place, with saws, routers, grinders and buffers making all kinds of nasty dust (as seen on the floor in the photo above). Open bins collect their fair share so I put a lot of my stuff in de-labeled clear plastic jugs, mostly from Costco. Of course, you gotta eat a lot of pretzel sticks to adopt this method....

That looks good way to store things. I had one or 2 in way time. I started down this road sometime ago with these yellow bins. So I just stay the coarse with them. There about $7 a piece and Kmart is only place I know of by me to get them. I usually by a few when we go to the store. My father was feeding his cats a certain cat food and he was saving this small tins. They're great for small parts. I used them in my welder for tips.

While we are talking about the bins. I had one that I didn't want to use anymore so I took all the drawers and reused them in my tool boxes. They are very handy.

Thanks you so much for kind words and stopping by. I can believe how much I have collected. I get a idea and start finding pieces or I find something toooooo good to pass by. One good example is my compressors. Did I need ANOTHER compressor. NO!!!! Like hell Im I NOT going to pick it up. Now I got 3!

I think a big part is my first garage so you finally get to do the projects you always wanted to do. I collected parts and pieces to do these projects. Im coming up on 10 years in house now and some of these projects just aren't gonna happen or I've changed direction.

Gerard, top job.

I had some time off from work after some surgery a few years back sorting 30 plus years of accumulated "stuff" became my recovery therapy.

Its a great feeling to get things sorted like that.

The 5 Stitches Garage 20 x 22 in FL

Talking about changing direction... Today I started another project cause if I looked at another screw or bolt I was gonna lose it. Shopnut would have to come get me and put me in padded room at the Asylum. I got a bed extender from a buddy of mine. We both figured it came from a Sport Trac but it wasn't. I was more a universal one. It's been it garage for weeks now. Today I tried to see what I can do with it. The Ford factory one is a weird shape.

59746afd6c0ab75fe3fe28895b8fa5f7.jpg

So I narrow this one and extended the front to back a little.
05971d69446a870d534f8c78bfd7b1fd.jpg
One of its best features. Is actually folding in inside the bed so no need to climb in back of truck for items that slide forward. I have a rug that usually have in here that helps.

One major issue is my 2007 has a freaking awesome spilt hard tonneau cover and but if make it to long it hits the top.
8ea24d793104e0a1e69a946ea3ba1b5e.jpg
And make it too wide and latch for gets in way.

181cee8626bb480369a39c0ac15330b8.jpg
So now I know why Ford designed it the way they did.
Not to bad for couple of hours of work. Got to get some more aluminum pipe but happy with progress and one other thing out of garage sort a speak. LOL.

The is for Jon04 might be interesting to others. The 2007 you know has that hard tonneau and I know the first gen does also. The way you usually has to open the tonneau is lift the rubber tab.

Well if lift those enough they wear out or break off. They also help seal cover.
I found way around the locks. The both locks have a child safety pulls which will open top of if locked. So hooked cords to them and when want to open I just pull the cord and keep them locked.

Now I can stand in back and pull front cord or back and open either side without touching the locks. A bonus is if I want to lock entire bed I only have to lock the tailgate.

Re: The 5 Stitches Garage 20 x 22 in FL

Gerard, top job.

I had some time off from work after some surgery a few years back sorting 30 plus years of accumulated "stuff" became my recovery therapy.

Its a great feeling to get things sorted like that.

Regards

It's is feeling good and feel making some good progress towards a overall less cluttered garage. I doubt it will never be as streamlined as I would like.

Re: The 5 Stitches Garage 20 x 22 in FL

I have some many containers of "new" fasteners to put away. I Splurged on a Stanley vidmar five years ago and sorted every container, coffee can, box, bag of bolts into this box and only took up 5 of the 11 drawers. I got rid of 8' of 12" shelving.
So now I have a bunch of " I can't just pass up/free/package deal fastners to put away.
Hey, maybe we can have group therapy session, sorting fastners. I'll supply the beer and ribs:lol_hitti

Good job on the sorting and the bed extender. Now if you get rid all those bottle openers, you would have more room. :wtf:

Have you considered cutting or grinding off the handles to the clear plastic drawers?

LOL, every time I get a can of paint they gave me one. Actually they are quite handy for other things. Never considered cutting handles of but have taken off lip off back that's the stop to fit them in a machinist chest.

Hey that could be a FGJ group thing. One day a weekend help each other get stuff done in garage. I know this weekend I could use the help. 301c2fa35927e1139f2ff3ab674ea7dd.jpg

Yeah, I should of thought of that earlier this year with the roof replacement:D

Those two photos really highlight how you organized 2500 lbs of stuff in a 500 lb box:lol_hitti:lol_hitti.
That be neat to go around and do a blitz on each over shop when needed. Hell, we're having a hard enough trying to get together for a beer just so we can talk about what we want to do.
Let's keep trying, it'll hapen sooner or later. I hoping to come off my crazy year around thanksgiving when we finish this job we're on now.

The way you usually has to open the tonneau is lift the rubber tab.

taumac,
Good work on adapting the bed extender.
I used mine this summer when we hauled sod to put on the side of the driveway after the driveway concrete work.
One of the guys at the sod farm marveled at the bed extender. He had never seen anything like it.

I would like to get it down to 2000 to 1500 if possible. It's slot of work having things this tight it here. There's a car show that was post in group that might be good thing to attend. I'll like to go if schedule works out for sure.

Between tonneau cover and bed extender and other feature makes the truck very versatile. I love it.
