Any air flowI can get always helps stay cool in the summer heat. IIRC there's a future post I did redoing that can light. I just ran a cord to the incoming power before the switch. Then I used a simple old desk lamp. I mounted it in a can cause didn't have a shield for that application.

Does the drill press light get hot? Lol

Oh wait I see you changed it out for a CFL bulb...bet it works much better, I've seen that thing smoking before when it had a regular bulb in it.

Your supposed to clean out the pork n beans residue before turning on he light bulb so it won't smoke.
But really, a very creative and simple solution. To the lighting I mean. I'm not commenting on the blower.

I wondered what the smell was and explains why I always got hungry when I turn that light on. LOL.

The blower.... Hmmmm Yep.... I'm not commenting no more cause anything I might say will incriminate me. LOL

Re: The 5 Stitches Garage 20 x 22 in FL

This is a 5 Stitches exclusive design and nobody has done this on the GJ before. Here's the finish pic.

d635b14c8215511b477351d28b69d442.jpg
Here's the problem. I like the look of traditional stack. The problem with a stack is that it gets top heavy and moving it is a pain. Also since I don't have a real intermediate chest I can not bolt the top chest down. So if moving it it could easily fall over. Also if I want to do anything on middle chest I have to remove all the drawer and lift it off top chest. So how do I keep the look of a traditional stack and solve this problem. So here what I did.

1feff13fd6a138c8622137a17bee6062.jpg

Each chest is mounted to the wall by itself. So I can remove the top, middle or bottom by itself without moving any other box.

Great idea with the boxes. I like having some bottom boxes movable so you can use them as tables. I'm not a big fan of full stacks in the home shop or garage. And like you said, they get too heavy. IMO, the stacked setups make more sense if you are working in a larger shop with others.

Re: My "Shop"

After I got the HF boxes done I looked for ways to deal with some other tool boxes on the Craftsman wall. One on these boxes has all my welding stuff. This includes my MIG stuff, O/A torch, my Turbo torch, and propane torches. While this set up works great in a shop setting they don't lend itself to make these portable. Meaning if I need to take them I have to go in the drawer, make up a toolbox of parts needed for equipment.

I bought these cause I needed these pieces to be portable. So I needed to combine pieces to each piece and keep them together. Starting with my MIG I decided to do this.
0af5831f4a457eb5fd898eb94cd11d88.jpg

f09bb25bed224fafcf56420b2053ffe6.jpg

This includes
pliers,
needle nose pliers
tank wrench,
hose wrench
brass, flux nozzles
025, 030, 035 tips
Flux wire
Solid wire
Now all I need to grab is a welder, tank, helmet, and gloves and away I go. I didn't make provisions for any tools like clamps, grinders etc. I just needed all the parts for the MIG include with the MIG ready to go.

Great idea storing tips in welder. Magnetic plier holder.

For us the small is better since you use it up faster. With our humity might be good to store in ziplock bag. Less oxidation. Which I need to do also.

This cabinet was a mess and kept throwing stuff in. Over the years I collected Dewalt cases and half of them where just sitting in here empty so figured I'll reuse them. So I started off with one like this.

I decided to cut all the dividers out with oscillating tool and when finished it looks like this.

I started to put some tool that had no cases into them. Here are just some of them.

Now besides my Dewalt saw, jigsaw, and Milwaukee Sazall the Dewalt cases are holding tools the would have been lose and not being able to be stack. That's been a project I got done that was wayyyyyyyyyyy over due.

Top idea Gerard, I have a dozen or so kicking around as well.

Thanks 1/2cup. I often hear that people say you should take tools out of the cases cause they take up too much room. They must talk about cordless drills and small tools.

Great news Gerard! I have 5 of those metal cabinets. Two are use and three in waiting. They sure could use the 5 stitches touch.
Oh and your avocado green saw. Just like my first saw. Boy that's been awhile.

Very nice idea cutting the inside of the boxes out to reuse them. My father has a few older metal boxes he told me to take and I might just take them to repurpose them.

Thanks, I might take you up on that. I'm can surly bring the 5 Stitches vibe to your place. We can tag team it with me bringing the design and you the labor. LOL. Someone has to drink the beer before it gets warm. LOL.

That saw is great. It's a 4 1/2 inch with a plastic case so makes it a light weight little wonder. I got it from a old guys house along with the DP. It was a trade for helping the family settle a estate.

Thanks, I usually like to have things dual purpose. A stack cant be used as such plus those taller Craftsmans are the perfect height to work on things. So had to come up with idea of how to store a stack of boxes and keep the bottom for work and that's how I came up with that idea. I also helps I've made a chest rack before we I had it above the bench. Same idea different location. Yes you lose top storage of the box but trade off was bench space and place to put a vise. In my situation I needed a vise location and bench space won over lose of top compartment.

I'm definitely a fan of repurposing. It's old paint buckets to tool boxes to bed frame to lights. I build the 5 Stitches on little budget making use of what I could find here and there. Over the years it has evolved to what it is today. I love the GJ but I see a lot of bought garages ( which they have there place and to each there own) but I subscribe to the built not bought idea. I take great pride in my place and try to show others on the GJ that you can do it too without spending a lot.

Lol I see what you did there.

Ok I'm caught up on the older posts now. Paint the frig the same silver as the boxes. Trade out all the plastic tubs for Craftman tool boxes with the large bottom storage. (And nothing wrong with a little flamingo pink cabinetry,we do live in FL) then call it done.

I thought your original bench was awesome but now that the plan you has become reality, so much better.

There's no pink on the GJ and especially in the 5 Stitches. Although, there's has been several shades of red spilled curiosity of me over the years building this place. Thus the name of the garage LOL. The refrigerator is getting up there on the list of projects. I have a FLORIDA theme all picked out for it.

Yes, I use all cheap 2in casters. Granted they don't roll the best but they work relatively well for the purpose. I got them at Walmart for $2.00. I think they are same ones you can get at HF. My HF boxes still have original casters until I can't find some super strong small ones.

I remember buying some smaller ones for my newer craftsman box and the locking swivels kept hitting the side lip on the box. But the wheels did bolt right up. I'll have to take some measurements.

I will say this the ones I use I only use 2 of the 4 holes since I don't want to drill new holes.
22d7371fd7ce5d50f06f1b742e7eb855.jpg
The left is the new ones and right is a original 1970 craftsman caster. So if I mark the bolt location and remove the caster it looks like this.
2f6d2e893d86baa001aa5c1893ca4776.jpg
Now I bolt on new caster on this way.
3a23bc0c21d68375ded9be1483ab8282.jpg
As you can see the original holes in the bottom of the box should line up but I always start left to right. I've never had to drill holes. Now some of the boxes have multiple holes for different size casters.

The tool cart is already being used.

And got my stash of steel out to start laying out my newest 5 Stitches original.

No hints so just have to wait until I get some of it together.

Each chest is mounted to the wall by itself. So I can remove the top, middle or bottom by itself without moving any other box.

Taumac,

I was wondering if there was anything other than the two brackets holding up each box? I love the idea and I am hoping to replicate it as it would give me a rollaway work surface.

Thanks!

Thanks, the answer is no. I did drill 2 small holes in back of each box and put 2 screws in to the wood. That was more as a safety factor. I work out here but if some else came over I didn't want them to put it off the bracket. The brackets are untested and is the ones I had at the moment and next time I go to HD Im going to check out selection available. The brackets that are up currently are rated at 110lbs each. The 10 drawer is a overflow box while the 5 drawer holds all my drill bits and DP stuff. I did make brackets out of bed frame last time but that material is spoken for. If I have some left over I might make some but for now they are holding up.

In honor of taumac...

A small progress update from my garage. The old Stacker upper tool chest has been taking up an unacceptable amount of space on one of the workbenches. Was looking at the messy drill press shelves that hold taps, drill bits, holes saws and other random stuff and reading taumac/Gerard's 5 Stitches Garage thread with his many over-workbench tool chests when the light went on... Mount the tool chest on the lowest shelf and put all the drill press tools into it. Lowered the shelf a bit for easier access and top opening clearance and ta da!, the chest is mounted (but tools have not been sorted and stored yet).

Two birds - one stone!

Thanks Tim. I'm always humbled when someone takes an idea I had and uses it in their own garage. Many might say "I'm stealing that idea" but you Sir showed it. Thank you.
