Solution number 3 - Stop being a cheap ****.

Go big or go home. Plus with this, the non-matching tote wall now matches.

Wait, you are home. :headscrat

How in the world will you sleep tonight knowing all is not perfect with those boxes and that you need to put back in place tomorrow.

Going to be a long night.:lol_hitti:lol_hitti

No sleep for Taumac. He's busy painting the bathroom.. :lol_hitti

I don't sleep to much and the bathroom is done. At least the vanity area. Still have to do other room with shower and toilet.

Gerard, do you need room to open the top lids on them ?

If you move the 10d up to match the 6d then you are going to have to different gap levels under each which might look funny.

Is the lateral cabinet strong enough to take the DP and vise on top (maybe add a sheet of ply or something on top) as it does not look like you will have much bench space there now.

If you cut (leaving the centre section) or lose the shelf completely and hang the 6d's the same way as you did the 10d's then they would be the same and you would have probably just enough gap under them still for the chargers. (Then room for another 6d in the middle to complete the look).

Then on the tote wall could you sacrifice a few totes and cut a shelf section out to recess the lateral cabinet into that wall with the DP and vise on it. At least they become portable to move around the garage then too.

That just leaves the welding cart to find a home.

Ok that's my 2 beers worth of thought

Cheers GB.

Oh and I scored something today you will be proud of, I'll go get a pic shortly and update this post.

edit: ...so not made in USA, but as close to craftsman as I'm likely to get.

IMG_4901.jpg

I have a folding razor blade like that and it's quite handy.

The lateral file as it sits now is way too tall. It's actually taller than my HF bench and once you add the DP it would be too tall to use safely. I thought about just putting it on top of the lateral file but it's heavy and awkward to move. I can see that getting old real quick. I would like to have access to the top compartments but as long as I can get it 1/2 to 3/4 open and use prop rod to keep in open I'll be happy with that. I actually just thought of a solution for the gap issue. It's another one of the DUH!!! moments. My solution (which I won't relieve yet) deals with 2 6D chest, DP and mobile table in one shot. There will be some trade offs going this route. The DP was free and even though I don't use it that often I would like to have a place for one even if down the road I get rid of this one to get a different one. I do like to have a big work bench but usually I like to work mostly on mobile benches. The bench that's there is just to mount a vise, DP, hold chargers stand give me small area to work. My big mobile bench I wheel out for bigger things and along with smaller one I just got both will serve there purpose well. I'll give you a hint on solution... I have a ongoing theme in my garage figure out the theme and you got the solution I came up with. LOL[emoji482]

In all seriousness, I use to be "I'm stuck with what I have". Then I came to GJ and learned people will alter anything if it makes it work better or look better. I think it's time to break out the drill and make all the handles line up.

While the handles are off, paint those boxes!!!!

I know I never stuck with exactly what. I do want things my way and like to work in a certain way I'm stuck within a box and takes some moving of stuff to get final results and best compromise available with items you have with the workability. Off course throw in my OCD and wanting the final product to look good also makes in difficult at times. I'm also doing things on a limited budget. Throw that all together and that's the 5 Stitches Garage.

Do you have enough space somewhere to build a shelf for DP that would allow a simple quick use, and then be able to slide DP onto whichever mobile cart, a quick way to secure it and use for larger projects?

Kinda of similar to how you store your grinders.

Tonight I ripped the Craftsman wall apart. 34a65b902a339a446a73479cee70e5e4.jpg I'm gonna do a mock up and try it out for few days before go any further. He's my idea. Two is company and 3 is a crowd. When I got the word from the tool gods it made total sense. I based everything in my garage on 2 (twins) I got 2 HF44, 2 machinist and list goes on. Now I stood staring at wall visually moving things. I know that the 9D bottom or 5D/10D stack isn't going anywhere cause I really really like this look.

d6b266443e3f427d577936850ad98bcd.jpg

I kept staring and staring
until I looked right dead center of the wall.
54d9244aa8f8df007ed0e7cf625ef240.jpg

The 3D bottom is being moved. I decided. If I flip the stack and 3D bottom I then can move DP to the corner. Only issue is I loose bench area. Here's the proposed new layout.
661e0ceb4c99fb8514e6f69933fbb1be.jpg

ceb1fd23e8accf7883f2650c4574087a.jpg

Now the chest aren't lifted off bottom rollers and didn't have 12in blocks to bring up middle chest but give me a idea.

Here's new DP area.
13fdc4ec321acf55ae61e2e60c07b2a0.jpg

I used the chest hanger and wood tops to rest DP on. Now I don't have to cut DP anymore and since got more room I might get a different DP. I have a buddy that's was looking to get rid of nice old one. At time I think it was too tall for me to use but now it might just fit. It's alittle hard to get good idea on work space I will have.

309c929aa47c264a3f163f7c5dc0f6d4.jpg81f48a2dfa712eb9503d0b0f94289a50.jpg

But center chest will be raised and chest are almost 8 in away from wall.
28a0c40666929bc0e13d8cba3daac27b.jpg

While all that is going on I mocking up new cart I just got. I find that it will hold 4 carry boxes.
7fc65499d68c9e6e4e84ddaad8b47e39.jpg
It has 2 outlets per strip and long cord. I also added the flip up shelf from the boxes CB picked up for me.

c09b09e2a3ab9883b1721c82e6b4f8fe.jpg

I still havnt tackled welding cart or what will become of it. All the wood from the bench actually I tucked behind the cabinets until I make final decision. I would hate to cut down the bench to fit now only to have to redo it. That's all for now. It's drinking and staring at wall time.

PS. new table it perfect height.

Ok, just tossing out an idea as I survey the current vision..... If you were to move the three smaller drawer chests to the middle. Make a custom riser drawer that would slide underneath bringing those chests to the same height as the 5 drawer chest which would then keep your OCD in check because now the bottom tool boxes would all have their drawer handles line up. The riser drawer could hold those longer odd items that usually get stuck in a corner..... This would also give you more uninterrupted workbench space . Just thinking out loud....

Hi taumac, I just saw your post over in the organization thread. Nice garage you have. I just did a restoration on the same Prentiss vise that you have. What do you have in the hole on top of the vise?

Thanks man, Think you might be referring to the swivel jaw pin. When I get home tonight I'll post some pictures of it and answer any questions you have.

PS. You'll never win a "best legs" contest.:lol_hitti

Whew, thank goodness for that! I have to watch out for Tampa and the Fab Four. They thought they were chicken legs and start putting hot sauce on them. It doesn't matter anyway that's not the "leg" I'm worried about the wife liking. LOL[emoji482]

How do the heights work out if you put the 9d's on top of the 3d bases and the 6d's on top of the 5d bases ?

I havnt tired that one yet. I really like to keep tall ones on end like book ends. Like two towers with bench between. The length of that wall and height I have to play with is the issue. If didn't build the shelf right above bench the height wouldn't be a issue. I could make tall stack.

Well, visually the new idea looks good and makes the DP functional but, you lose a lot of bench top space for work and charging, vise and other tool attachment there. Will you have enough other/portable bench surface to make up for the loss?
Looks like this might require lots of staring and beer drinking to finalize.

I don't know just yet. I'm thinking between the big mobile bench and small one I will have enough bench when needed. I will probably just use the bench for the vise and small area next to vise to work. I'm just gonna have to try it out to see. Just more beer drinking in order

The hole on top of the Prentiss 19 is to hold a swivel pin.
740831e8f0873d87e2c583beb92ce418.jpg

The pin holds the jaw in place but when pulled allows jaws to clamp down on odd shaped objects.
a5b907557701850c4d50e3747e64e7b3.jpg

The pin is a special tamper pin for the tamper hole in the vise.

This one was made by Kevin Scott. He is a GJ member and he has a website that makes replacement parts for vises. He does great work. Here's the link to his website.

That's neat Gerard, I have been living behind a rock as I have never seen a vise like that.

Regards

Thanks 1/2 cup. My father saw it at a garage sale and picked it up for me. IIRC he paid $30 for it. It's from 1920's as far as some of the vise experts on the GJ can place it. I was using it but decided to put my vintage vises away and beat on some of my modern ones for everyday use.
Here's my old Reed

Funny got 2 vintage vises and got them tucked away and using a this

Give the guy some tools and a toolbox and he can fix about anything. Give a guy a garage and he'll use those tools to rearrange it 437 times. LOL

Thanks man. I took awhile to build but that's the look I was going after. Exactly how I plan then.... Gerard happened! I wanted to build a service cart from one of the extra chest but it came apparent that wouldn't happen. You see 2 chest in background? ed6b1f1191d3ccd97cac190b70a6513d.jpg

220672bd0a7b0796c88e208461d68066.jpg
So if built the cart it would be stored here with 2 chairs and small IKEA cart. Made it impossible to get through or get to box if needed. So Gerard happen and try to get those chest on the Craftsman wall. Even though wall came out great it just didn't function as well as I hoped. It just needed tweaking which was moving everything 2in to the right. I keep knocking off sensors to garage door pulling the last roller out. Then DP was a issue. I might not have that DP in future but I did need better plan or place to have one. I thought about many places but it was better left on bench then the alternatives. Out of floor space swap to corner only option and to get 6D out of way I swapped the carry ones out cause those much easier to store. Alittle trail and error is par for course....

Something doesn't look right in the last picture. Time to trade Red out for some CM rollers.

I actually thought about painting my HF boxes to match my Craftsman's. Gray and red HF cabinets would be bad *** but that's a project on the bottom of the priority list.

I think you're onto something with that statement. Maybe you should take a re-arrange break and get everything painted the same theme. Refinish the Craftsmans to their original colors and paint the HF to match then see how they start looking as you arrange them.
Sometimes just having all the right color perspective can spark the right look in your head of how they should be placed.

I already started using a color that's close to the HF red on the Craftsmans. I would realistically only have to paint outer parts of the 44's gray and keep the drawers untouched. I thought by just having the red match up it would make big difference.

I think you are right and it would visually make a big difference. having a consistent color scheme will lend itself to your desire for cabinets placed in such a way that is pleasing to your eyes. And having the HF cabinets matching color gives you more options to mix and match.
Not to mention it would look just plain sharp!
