Thanks Platonic. I appreciate it. I never did search the lighting thread in general, just this particular thread.

Light install is going well. I'm 1/2 done hanging fixtures. I'll be picking out bulbs soon.I'm spending about 5 minutes each stripping the ballasts and assembling the fixtures. Not bad. I still don't like the idea of throwing all those ballasts in the trash. I'm sort of a tree hugger. Sort of.ef3f466f1f3582c100f22ec9cb91b0e1.jpg

Light install is done, and I could not be happier with the results. I went with the EIKO LED15WT8F/48/840K-G7D tubes. 15W, single ended, 4000k, frosted lens. Got them locally for $10 each.

15A x 120V = 1800W
1800W x .8 (safety factor) = 1440W
1440W / 165W = 8.7 fixtures
You can safely install 8 165W fixtures.
I recall one of the electricians on this forum stating that a dedicated lighting circuit is not subject to the safety factor rule - if this is true you could install 10 fixtures. (Near impossible to find that post).

Edit - everything I see online goes by the 80% rule. So 8 fixtures is compliant, 9 is slightly above compliance by 45W (0.375A).

Ha ok I have a 3 bay garage 13’ ceiling I was thinking of using 3 per bay so 9 total. Many times all would be on at once. I have plenty of panel space maybe I’ll do 2 circuits then..

On edit, I guess I can run 20a feed on 12 wire to the switch box then run 14 wire to the fixtures to keep it to one circuit?

Why not just run all 12g to a 20a breaker?

15A x 120V = 1800W
1800W x .8 (safety factor) = 1440W
1440W / 165W = 8.7 fixtures

I put all 24 fixtures (48 tubes), on one 20a breaker through 12g wire.

So, 20A x 120V = 2400W
2400W / 15W per tube = 160 tubes.

Is this math correct for my EIKO LED15WT8F/48/840K-G7D tubes? I never did the math.

RayBob58 - 2400W x .8 (safety factor) = 1920W / 15W = 128 tubes

With only 48 15W tubes you could have gone 15A easy:
1440W / 15W = 96 tubes

Yeah, I knew I was overdoing it, but I had just never done the math. Thanks. Now I know I can add a few here and there if I need. I learned alot from this thread. I know I didn't follow your recommendations on fixtures and tubes, but I'm very happy with the way it turned out. Plenty of light with no glare. Thanks again.

PS- Thanks for the reply. Any opinion on "TechBrite"? I like the fact built in USA. Better than Maxlite???
No opinion on the Techbrite housing. I doubt it's better than Maxlite quality, but I don't see an available 3-lamp Maxlite. The Maxlite 2-lamp 4ft strip housing is heavier gauge sheetmetal than any I've seen.

Good stuff. Techbrite is made in Cincinnati, Ohio. They use quality components in their products and are good people.

If you have the panel space I would run 2 circuits, also since you have 14g. Nice not to have all lights on one circuit.

There is plenty to read about light fixtures on this forum. When I talked to my electrician about new fixtures to replace the 4 25 year old ones in my garage, he came up with a great idea. He and his partner cut the ballast out and reconnected the wires and installed new LED bulbs. it took 15 minutes to redo my garage. I have not gotten the bill yet, but am quite satisfied. The bulbs have a 5 year warranty.

This was done in the apartment I lived in previously. I had to wear sunglasses it was so bright lol. The attached shop building got the same treatment. I plan to do this to my fathers shop at home. Biggest thing to check is the tombstone design and if it works with the led bulbs you choose.

So from the 10 or so pages of this thread that I've thumbed through, all of these fixtures are direct wired. My current shop lighting has my various 4 and 8 foot fixtures plugged in to outlets. What are my low cost options for corded 2 light 4' led's and 2 light 8' led's? On a side note, I was gonna convert my 4 footers but they don't have a visible ballast, evidently they are mounted in the end caps and I'd have to destroy the caps to reach the ballast. El cheapo's from Lowes or wally world.

These lights from Costco really aren't bad, I bought 2 don't have them up but plugged it in and sat it on my workbench throws pretty good light.

At $19.99 a light pretty cheap, they also have motion sensor ones.

One of the reviews said that these can not be turned on by a wall mounted switch, they have to be turned on by the pull chain. Never heard of this before. How do you have yours switched?

Yet to install, just bought for some fill in light. I think if you pulled them all on and had switched plugs it should work.

Getting ready to pull the trigger on lighting. Garage is 25x60 large 4 car garage, most of the ceiling is 10' except where the lift is, 13'. Garage will be used to service variety of cars. Not a professional shop, just a guy with older eyes wanting decent lighting. :) I am thinking of 4 spaced equally on either side of each car running just after the garage door to the wall (front to back).

Is the:
Maxlite LSS2XT8USE4803 fixture and
GLLUSA GL07103-3M(5000K) 48" 18W LED T8
still a preferred set up?

Thanks in advance.

I just went with 9 of these fixtures with the greentek bulbs for a 24x30x9. Went with three rows of three evenly spaced and gives me plenty of light. For what i need I think more would have been overkill. I’m very happy with them so far. For the price I don’t think you can go wrong.

That's the fixtures and lamps that i just installed (Thanks PS!) and couldn't be happier. 26 X 40 X 12, and I went with 22 fixtures. When you come in from the dark and flip the switch it's kind of like a welding arc, but my old eyes adjust immediately and it's just nice, uniform light everywhere. I think it worked out to just a hair over $30 per fixture delivered from ProLighting.

You guys are awesome. I just converted two fixtures to LED, based on the info you provided. Went with the GLL lights from Pro Lighting in Brighton, MI. It really was quick and easy. Significantly more light than the fluorescent tubes. I had been putting this off, as I didn’t want to do the research. Having it all in one location is great.

Okay so I'm gonna connect two of these Maxlite fixtures together to make one 8 footer by screwing them together with some sheet metal screws. I'm assuming that all I need to do is connect the blacks to blacks and whites to whites and then connect those to a cord for a plug in application.

I just bought 8 fixtures and 16 bulbs from Bees Lighting and the total cost was 230 and change I believe. I think it ended up around 23 bucks per light. Bees also has free shipping!!

Why not use the knockouts that are already there, and install an EMT connector on each end and cut a small piece of EMT to join the fixtures together.
