Yet another small, but peace of mind project here:

I'll be Installing (3) Cans/Pot Lights in some existing aluminum soffit. Basically our house has them about 2/3 of the way around the front of the house, but the last corner was lacking.....
I whipped up a quick circle jig to mark the underside of the soffit with the hole location before I cut them out with the Dremel/hole attachment. I'll then go back up into the attic and place the Cans and connect the wires I ran yesterday.

Funny, we were talking with MDs about this sort of thing a decade ago. I guess it really can take that long before the possible becomes true in practice.

Thats pretty neat for sure.

I'm still waiting on fullfillment of another filament order. Been a few days with no shipment notification yet. In the meantime, I printed off some LS exhaust blockoff plates and am looking to see what else may be handy for the swap.
I flipped on the headlights in my GMT400 pickup yesterday and noticed the switch was stickier than normal, so I looked around and found a replacement knob I can print. It doesn't match the hvac knobs exactly but I think itll work pretty well. Just need to print it in ASA or something so it doesn't melt in a hot cab.

Well that complicates my first printer purchase. I liked the idea of Prusa much more than Bambu or Qidi, etc, but was worried about their lagging feature set.

I wish the kit was available for purchase.

Everything about Prusa seems better to me. Parts availability, repairability, upgradeability, support, mods, open source, you name it. I have an MK3S now and toyed with the idea of getting a Bambu, but I don't think I'd ever consider one now that the Core One is here.

Maybe you can get a used MK3S or 4S to hold you over until the Core One kit is available. There are a ton of dirt cheap MK3Ss on the used market.

I have been putting off buying a new printer for a while. That new Prusa will probably be the one. I have been looking hard at Bambu, but there are several little things that I just don't like about it. The Prusa addresses many of those (still would like a bigger build volume...).

New Bambu comes in early 2025 and will be bigger....but that and that it'll be their new "flagship" which means it's likely in the $2k or more range is about all that's out there for it

I love that Prusa actually released a new machine and that's it's Core XY. I would personally have preferred that they not have limited themselves to upgrading Mk4's it to and have started with more of a blank slate but I get the realities of cost and their philosophy on upgradeability. If they would release a CoreOneXL so to speak with minimum 300 x 300 x 350 I would hop on it. Looking forward to seeing real world reviews on it

In printing world....the wife's coworkers are in love with printed animals and in terms of time and money it's about the best "goodwill" or "brownie points" I can buy. This one took more work....but a request for a lobster was delivered.

There are several recent printers that would have me hesitating to buy one of the Bambu Lab printers if I could wait for after the holidays to pull the trigger. I would want to see what reviews are like but a few months back it seemed like BL was in most cases the clear winner if the last dollar wasn't make or break (it often is for a cheap buyer like me)

In the X1C price range there is the Creality K2 Plus. Most of the reviews are really positive and the 350x350 build area is a big step up from the X1C. At $1500 it is a step up in price from the X1C's new $1200 price but the size increase may be worth it for many.

Certainly the Prusa Core One looks attractive. Prusa is one of those companies I just like but the prices have traditionally be really high for someone who is trying to justify $200 for a toy... er.. tool. But if I didn't need the size and wasn't too price sensitive and wanted a really good machine (and was a bit worried about Bambu's possible security issues.

At a somewhat reduced price I might see if the QIDI Plus 4 gets a multi material unit. It sounds like at full speed it loses some print quality vs the X1C but it can do high temp materials etc and has a 300x300 build area.

At what I suspect will be a similar price point Anycubic has a new Core XY machine with multi color abilities. Price not announced yet.

For us budget buyers,
Flashforge just launched the 5X which is a version of the 5M with a multi-color unit. I have a 5M (not 5M Pro) and it's a great unit for the price I spent. The 5X is supposed to be $400 when it's finally available. I like that the 4 spools are on the side so the machine takes up almost no extra space vs the single color model I have. The print quality is about the same as BL's A1 while the print speed is a bit faster. The build area is typical of "normal" sized consumer printers at 220x220.

Of course there is also the new BL printer and what will it bring to the table. The current BL offering are solid but with the new stuff coming out I would, if I were buying, wait a few months to see how these new options go and what BL does in response (more price cuts, more features/abilities?).

I am not anti-prusa but I am unimpressed with the new "core one" in the not to distant past Prusa was an innovator and pioneer in the industry. However, for the last few years they have fallen behind. The Prusa XL is still the best toolchanger for the money, but it is quite expensive. Dollar for dollar I think I would suggest a bambulabs printer over the core one at the moment. There isn't anything inherently wrong with the prusa but a P1S combo can be had for $750. That'll get you every feature available on the core one plus the AMS. Depending on print needs some may not like that 250x220 build plate either. There is the benefit of the 270 Z on the core one if someone does lots of taller rather than wider prints.

I personally think Prusa should have targeted the P1S pricing instead of X1C pricing with this model but that's just me. I've been in the 3d printing world for what feels like forever and I've never really been a fanboy of any particular brand. I feel like I am fairly impartial when I make my judgements as such.

All that said I had intended on buying a Prusa XL toolchanger specifically to do multicolor TPU prints. I had everything ready to pull the trigger multiple times but just felt like it wasn't going to be what I wanted. So my Sovol SV08 was delivered on Monday and I am already working on building it into a stealthchanger. So I'm all over the place with my printer choices.

Today I'll be embedding a magnet into my disc brake pad spacer.

This will be nice because I can never find a spacer when putting the bike on the trainer and with it being magnetic, I can just stick it to the side of the Kickr (indoor cycling trainer)

After 1 iteration and a quick 5 min print it's done.

I went with black to have it blend in more when not in use (as pictured)

Finished the "all aluminum" core for my core-xy machine.

The last piece was the 3d printed brace across the top and back for zip tying the wires to.

While installing it, I realized the faceplate that the extruder is bolted to is a bit loose. I'll need to take the extruder off so I can tighten the bolts. I'll probably add some blue loctite to the bolts when I tighten things down.

I'm working on a video of the design/build process. I designed the mount as I went.

i was not happy with packouts solution to a roller case with a drawer. so klein it is. but now i gotta adapt klein to packout.

front drawers so you dont need to unstack the whole lot to get to the big tools.

1732409866840.png

so its gona go roller, klein drawer unit, then transition to packouts.

Been printing divider bins for a drawer unit I picked up on FB. Need more storage for the small fasteners. Can double stack these in drawer for 30 compartments in each. Customizable...

Printing another mold, this time for a joke. I'm making a coffee mug out of some resin-cast coffee beans. This is for the slug, and I'll chuck it up on the lathe to hog it out and do the finish work.

Once that's done, I'll measure for a resin-cast handle. It's parametric, based on volume and height.

really wishing i had a 750mm cubed printer.

the every size, every person zip tie system. 14/16/18 need to snap together in a multi part print to get the height needed.

1732926268946.png

looking down from the top of 14. divider bins so they dont curl over and hide in the bottom.
1732926303067.png

then they all have a connector system to snap together horizontally.

What is everyone's favorite nylon filament for gears and pulleys? I have a potential project in mind (weld positioner).

I think I will read this whole thread so I don't have any questions . . .

Gotta get up to speed on how to convert files to work on my son's near-new printer.

And Dad has a hubcap backing I'd like to replicate.

I know it's not your nylon, but I've seen some really nice results from Bambu PPA-CF. It's stupid expensive.
Thanks. The CF filaments in general look amazing. I have made some functional parts for my printer out of Prusament PCCF and they look incredible.

Tested the printed alignment fixture for removing a broken exhaust stud. Worked about 90% so I'd do it again. Then printed a cover for the oil fill to keep stuff from falling into the case. Drew and printed a prototype for the roof rack mount.

Made a hopper and chute for our wheat grinder. The integral hopper is really small and empties in about 10 minutes. The new one goes for about 40, which is awesome. What’s not awesome is I need to redo the chute coming off the bottom of the grinder. It backs up with flour and doesn’t go down, so it just starts spilling over the sides. I think I just need to make the opening larger.

I've never used one before, but it looks to me like it could be an angle issue. If the initial part of the chute was steeper it might help the flour go down better. I'd also get my layer height as small as possible so its not acting like ribs holding flour in place. In similar applications (in my case dispensing a chalk line on the ground from a hopper) we have better luck with a vibration device mounted to the hopper, or chute in your case.

That's great, I really like your solution to add the knob to the lid as a separate item.

Maybe take the sharp bend out of the top of the hopper?

I think you're right - the hard part is getting the steeper angle while still accounting for the small distance between the grinder and the mounting board. The grinder is pretty well designed, but the company didn't give much thought at all about mounting it and its use. I like the ******** idea - it's probably a good idea regardless the design of the chute. That would be super easy to add.

That's what I was thinking as well - it'll give more space for the flour to pile up then overcome its angle of repose and dump down into the bucket.
