Thanks but I want to re-use the same lamp because it matches the ones on the lamp posts in front AND because it was damn expensive and I have nothing to use it for if I don't re-use it!
They have those, too. You could also use the guts from one to make your current one go. Does it need to be a lot of light, or just something?

Dan, not to bring up a sore subject, you already have solar, so maybe consider a low voltage light on a timer. I assume you have access to the power cable to the existing light so run a low voltage cable to the nearest outlet, connect it to a 12v transformer with timer or photocell.

I have a low voltage floodlight to light up my American flag so I can leave it up at night. I found a 12v power brick, added more wire and plug it into a timer that plugs into the outlet. For a more permanent setup I could mount a low voltage timer next to the outlet on the house.
Flag Floodlight and Timer.jpg
Instead of the floodlight fixture, use the existing E26 Edison socket in your lamp post. Then just replace the 120v bulb with a 12v bulb:

Nah, doesn’t need to be a lot. Mostly for show and the area it will light is relatively small. Some of the ones I see on Amazon have a few small solar panels built into the top. If I can remove those and adapt them to the existing fixture I’d guess the rest of the “guts” would fit inside. Good suggestion. Hopefully they have a relatively cheap one I can get to sacrifice for this.

For the record: Bought this new-to-me 2021 truck today. Silverado 1500 High Country with 3.0 Duramax. 4x4, yada yada, more bells & whistles than any vehicle I've ever had.

I've liked my Gladiator but have realized it's too small almost since I bought it in summer of 2021. Now my girlfriend's back is giving her some trouble on longer drives so I used that as an excuse to look around. Was looking for a 1500 Denali since I had a 2014 2500HD one. Was thinking 2018 or '19 and found this 2021 that has 60,000 miles already but that's ok with me. I doubt I'll put another 60,000 on it in another 5 years. Hope to keep it long term. Impressive low end torque, great mpg - got over 19 while towing my Gladiator back from San Diego where I bought it. Supposedly capable of 30+ mpg on longer drives. I'll only use it to pull my wakeboard boat a few times a year.

Do you have a trailer or rented one to bring the Gladiator back home?

Did you find the new truck at a dealer?
No the Gladiator is set up to be used as a toad behind our rv so I just towed it home with the Chevy. It towed the Jeep fine. I think the Jeep weighs about 4500+ lbs and the Chevy can tow up to about 11,000 lbs so it was no issue.

Yea, found it at a private dealership.
Nice truck, Dan. I was wondering when you and your SO were going to get tired of were going to get tired of the Gladiator as a road trip ride....
The Jeep is a very capable truck and I liked the look of it. Still do but it’s just too small inside to be comfortable for long rides and also - natch - rides kinda rough too. With her back now giving her trouble it was easy to use that as an excuse to make the change. I told my self never again for a black vehicle but damn, they look so good. So it’s back to doting over one! Thanks for the kind words.

Your girlfiend was discussing the Gladiator ride with my wife when we were at Don's BD party at the BPG. I figured it would be just a matter of time... ;)

Wow!! I read the entirety of this thread in one day. We’re on vacation in Hawai’i at the moment and this is a down day. You have a beautiful home in a fantastic area. I can definetly appreciate your attention to detail (OCDness), the garage looks great and I dig the 55. This is the view I enjoyed while reading

^^^ Thanks guys!

JUST home from spending the week in Kernville, CA on the Kern River with my two beloved older sisters and one of my brothers-in-law. My oldest sister's husband passed away a little less than 2 years ago. We've vacationed in Kernville almost every year since I was too young to go and I'm about to turn 69 so since the 1950's.

Great memories in that I visited the Onyx General Store - now closed - but it's been there since before the Civil War! The little army of cousins and I went there as kids and got ice cream with our parents.

There were 8 of us boys - Mike, Steve, George, David, Larry, Bobby, Phil & I and we all would crowd onto this one "big rock" - which no longer looks so big - to fish. No one worried that we'd drown I guess. They must have figured we'd all look out for each other. I don't remember ever having sun tan lotion put on me (no such thing as "SPF" in those days). Some day - hopefully a long time still - I hope my ashes are committed to the river from this rock. Anyway, a good week.

PS to klean63, Congrats on a nice trip to Hawaii. I LOVE it there. We try to spend some time on Kauai every summer and I never get tired of it. Also, thank you for the kind words.
Thanks Dan we visit at least once a year usually Maui, however this is our third trip this year. We came to support a friend doing the Ironman World Championship race tomorrow, sort of a working vacation. As a side note, I drive right by you on my way to work.IMG_4533.jpeg

Ha! Yeah, I just drove past the brewery my self on the way home with the RV & Gladiator this afternoon.

My girlfriend (of now 23 years) and I first took a trip to Kauai 20 years ago and ended up buying a timeshare in Lihue - which is about the center of the west coast. We've stayed there many times at the "Beachboy" resort and it is still great but we prefer the north shore in Princeville where we can use our "points" and spend a lot of time in Hanalei - my most favorite place and on the beaches up there. Can't wait to go again soon.

Off the subject of Hawaii for a moment! I was pretty excited about the Casper retractable screen door you posted about since we have an odd size door we need a screen door for, excited until a few posts later where you sent it back for being a pile o junk. Did you ever find a suitable replacement? You may have mentioned it but my memory isn’t what it once was

Memory? Memory? What's that?! Ha ha. I can relate.

I ended up buying a different brand retractable screen and it's STILL crappy. I don't get it because it's the same one my sister has at her house and hers seems to work very well. Of course it CAN'T be MY installation, ha ha.

In our old Pasadena house we had a wide, super heavy front door and a narrow French door that we had modified into combo solid/screen doors. The guy that does this cuts out the middle of the doors and installs these high quality wrought iron metal inserts that open and have a screen inside. Makes the doors dual purpose. Not cheap; if I remember right it was about $400 for the front door alone.

I may have the same thing done to the side door in the livingroom to replace the crappy retractable screen.

Pics of inside & outside of front door. The house was built in 1926. No idea if this was the original front door but it had been painted with a million coats of paint. Helluva job to strip it. Chemicals barely touched it. I used a heat gun ad then a belt sander but got her done. French door was a modern Home Depot door I had installed in place of a narrow window so only cutting was required, no refinishing.

Wow! That door is beautiful, unfortunately it wouldn’t work for me. Seeing as you’ve tried two of the retractable type and haven’t had any luck, I’ll be just dumb enough and try one anyways😂😂

Thanks! Yeah, I LOVED the way they came out and still do. Then we listed the house for sale like a month or two after we did it! Sheesh.

This happened just as the COVID quarantine was enacted and we couldn't even hold open house on weekends, couldn't find movers. I called U-Haul and they told me all their moving guys had quit! I ended up doing it with my young son-in-law but it was quite a job. Strained my guts out lifting some of the stuff. Anyway, we never really got the use out of these beautiful door conversions so I am thinking about doing it to this one door in the new house next Spring. Hopefully I can find the number for the guy that did it and he's still doing them!

Post for record:
Drove an hour+ today to West Hollywood to see a baby grand piano for sale. It was a scam (DAMMIT!) We lost no money just time. Was near the original Farmer's Market which has been there 100 years so we went there for lunch. Hadn't been here since I retired in 2017.

For non-Californians this is right next to CBS Studios where shows of the 60's to the present are filmed. Last time there (still working) one of my guys found actress Faye Dunaway's wallet on a candy stand's counter. He ran after her to return it. She was very nice, wanted to give him a reward but he didn't accept. Anyway, later "The Grove" a main street-looking shopping center complete with street trolley was built next to it. Back in the day Gilmore Stadium was next door.

Great food. I don't know if anywhere else had a "food park" before this place. I remember my mom driving us there when I was a little kid in the early '60's. Great memories.tempImageqGOfV2.jpgtempImageG87oiv.pngtempImagerv3Gia.png

Where did you eat in the farmers market?

Too bad about the piano. Hopefully you had a plan to get it moved?
I ate at Magee’s - the place in the first picture.
Roast beef plate with boiled parsley potatoes and corn on the cob. Absolutely delicious. I always eat there. Maggie’s has corned beef, pastrami, ham, even some Mexican food that looks really good. There is any kind of food you can think of at the Market but I go so infrequently I always go to my favorite.

Touched up some small chips on the front of the new-to-me Silverado 1500 High Country. It's black (Yeah, I said I'd not buy another back vehicle!) Didn't take "Before" and "After" pics but it's surprising how much difference tiny things like that make. Bit by bit I'll clean up a couple tiny things no one else even sees but me. It entertains me to think I'm making it "perfect" - you're right, there's no such thing as a perfect used pickup truck.

I was just at the Grove a few weeks ago.
We really enjoy the place.

Do you ever go to Grand Central Market in LA?

My girlfriend and I used to go there all the time for breakfast. It's a fun place.
I used to go to Grand Central when I was still working. Haven’t been there since 2017 now.

One of my guys worked there in the liquor department when he was just a kid. Like 15 or 16. Said he used to sell to a lot of celebrities in those days. Said Glen Ford used to buy a LOT of liquor. Both for himself and for parties he would have.

In process on a gazebo roof extension. A ladder frame topped w/fiberglas to be unnoticeable. It will protect an amplifier under the BBQ counter that burnt out when it last rained. It'll be painted to match gazebo and I found matching fiberglas panels @ Home Depot. An El Niño wet winter is forecasted.

First pic show area I'll be covering and second shows location of amp. It's on a rack so off the concrete but water dripped from above. More pics to come.

Making the 2x structure out of what's left of the 3/4" plywood I have left over from when I needed it to move the heavy *** brick pier.

Yeah, I know what you're thinking, "Dummy, that's NOT the right use of plywood!" You're right. But I have no room to store it out of the rain. Better this than letting it warp and get ruined this winter. I'll sand, prime and put two coats on components so they can't (theoretically!) absorb moisture, then assemble with glue and install fiberglas. So any water will be very incidental.

I thought you might wait until it was 108F again since you so enjoyed working on that gazebo in the heat this year.
Ha, funny....and pretty accurate. I keep telling myself not to do certain strenuous things outdoors in the heat but I like to do what I like to do, WHEN I like to do it! You know, like a kid.

The problem is I need to avoid a stroke as I am reluctantly acknowledging my age.

For instance, my wife says I'm becoming hard of hearing. I don't think it'll be too big a burden to wear hearing aids, but I dislike the idea of it. New small ones don't even show. But it's like I'm passing a signpost on the road that says, "Now Entering OLD Age". You can't make a U turn either. I have a brother-in-law that really needs to use a cane but doesn't want to for the exact same reason. Vanity yes, but more about the meaning of it.
