That shelf edging looks great, Dan.
What did you use?

Someone asked about the edging on the "What did You Do IN Your Garage Today?" thread. I got it at Home Depot in the drywall area. Didn't really know much about it but GJ'er Madison069 posted this explanation:

"It's basically an edging for exposed ends of drywall material generally called corner bead or in this case L metal. they have different types for inside corners, outside corners and bullnose where you put drywall against say a brick wall in a corner. So instead of just taping these joints you would use this metal strip to finish it for a stronger corner/end."

Mine has a 7/8" opening but they also had 1/2.

Hey Dan
Happy birthday. Looks like you are enjoying some quality shop time in your new home. Bench just keeps gittin better.

I'm going to be going through the same mess around here that you have been experiencing. In the next few weeks. New windows, roof and a paint job on the house. No Christmas decorations here this year.

Thank you Don.

All that work was originally the reason we moved from Pasadena. We knew we were about to pay off the mortgage after I retired and planned to refinish the hardwoods floors, replace windows, paint inside & out, new pergola in back maybe re-roof. My girlfriend said, "Ugh, we have to take everything out of the house, then put it all back in again, we'll have contractors in & out for probably a year! Why don't we just move?!"

Best of luck on all your work. I found a truly GREAT contractor but I don't think he goes too far from my area. Let me know if you need someone. Best, Dan

Painting completed today.

8 spray cans of Kilz on the wood knots. EIGHTEEN!!! tubes of caulking for cracks and seams, 10 gallons of primer and 10 gallons of finish paint. Yikes, lots of material. The wood absolutely soaked it up. Up close it looks tight and excellent.

Plasterers were here all day chipping, installing tar paper and tying stucco mesh into the existing mesh. Looks like they did a very good job and left the patio clean BUT....

One of the outlet boxes wasn't re-mounted forward so the plasterer just wrapped the outlet in electrical tape and I assume thinks he'll just stucco around it. NOT!

I contacted the contractor to get out here before stucco work starts tomorrow to either remount the box or add an extension to it. So far, this has been the ONLY corrective work I've had to identify. Not bad considering what I did for a living my whole career.

Nothing too exciting today but it IS critical. Drip edging, valley tin & hot melt roofing paper or fabric - whatever it's called was installed. Additional concrete tile to "match" (it won't) will be delivered Monday.

Lamps and fan installed today, BUT....the fan is defective. Spent an hour troubleshooting it with tech rep, no dice. It doesn't respond to the remote and get this...it spontaneously reverses itself, then reverses itself again!

Anyway, the great news is they will give us full credit and they DON'T want it sent back! I'm gonna remove the "brain" thing that responds to the remote and wire it so it's On/Off and maybe use a dimmer to control speed. If I can make that work it saves us a lot!

Then just before dark the roof tile was delivered. Before the operator knew it, it had sprung a leak and spray fluid on both the old and the new concrete - EEK! We put a tarp down to get the last pallet off but tomorrow I'll go at it with Brakleen and a pressure washer.

IF I get it off - no harm/no foul. If not and contractor has to demo/replace any of it he'll pursue it with the delivery company. Operator was apologetic but it's still new work and I don't want it messed up

Stucco guys were here today. Scratch coat and brown coats went on. Will dry 5-6 days then smooth finish with color will go on. Heard some people call it Santa Barbara stucco? News to me but I like it.

Spent the entire day in the garage doing small stuff - still organizing from the move! Giving way/throwing away stuff - everything I put out by the trash disappears fast!

Also had a detailer here doing paint correction on my truck. My daughter lives on a VERY narrow, nearly a one way street. Her neighbor cut bushes near the street leaving sharp branches sticking out. Scraped the hell out of my passenger side. I was afraid to try correction myself. Detailer got well over 90% of them BUT found something he calls "alligatoring" in the paint that ironically doesn't show when the paint isn't polished to tip top condition. Oh well, the truck is shiny again/I'm happy! Pics to come tomorrow.

Dan,

Just finished reading through this thread. Everything looks really nice. I also got to experience buying/selling while the realtors are trying to keep in compliance with virus mandates. Certainly not the most pleasant thing to go through.

I've subscribed and will be watching as your thread progresses.

Thanks for taking the time to read the thread. I’ve wandered far from garage stuff but since I’m retired from the heavy civil construction industry I find I miss it and this gives me some construction to watch and enjoy. I hope others enjoy it too but we’ll get back to exclusively garage stuff soon enough.

Trying for more organization in the garage.

The upper cabinet the prior owners left didn't have any shelves. But the 2x4Basics workbench kit came with self brackets I didn't care for on the bench but they work fine for inside the cabinet. Some crappy (see pics) old lumber I had was ripped to 2x4's for struts. A quick black spray and screwed together this shelving system. 1x2 front piece glued & tacked and Bob's your uncle!

While I was putting away stuff that had stacked top on the small, mostly woodwork related bench I kept knocking the screwdrivers off the magnetic rack. It's been bugging me and I knew I needed a new saw blade on my Bosch contractor saw so I decided to use it to cut some shallow notches in the rack. Doesn't look so good but works great!

Roofing tile going on today. They got about half done and it looks like they're mixing in the older, faded tiles with the newer ones. In a year or so it'll likely all look the same....or I won't be thinking about it anymore!

Work approved by Oly and Joey!

If you want the roof tiles to match, get some horseshit, mix it with water, and make tea. Then spray it on the new tiles. A couple rainstorms later, they'll be closer in color. It's how we used to match brick, stucco, and tile work, back in the day.

At this point^^^ in your response I could feel myself saying..."yeah well I don't think so, uh uh....":bounce:

Interesting idea though. I had no idea anyone did something like this. I'm certain my girlfriend's face would screw up into a lemon at the mere suggestion!

Thanks you guys!

I don't THINK DaVinci is the brand name I saw on the pallets of new stuff. No idea what the roofing that was already up there was called. The house was built in '71, gutted & remodeled in '15 - they added 700-800 sq. ft. so they blended in some tiles then. Now it's having to be done again. I wouldn't be surprised if there are three brands up there! But at least it'll be in back so not noticeable.

Dubber,
Man I'm LOVING your 997! If I ever have another P-car it'll be one of those, or a 951 again, or a 928, or...lol. I sold the mid year I totally redid with a mini backdate. Small Euro bumperettes, chrome instead of flag mirrors, H4 headlights, yada, yada. It was Sahara Beige (light yellow) and got a LOT of attention from women for some reason. I think because the color made them think it was "cute" - oh well. Thanks for the kind words. I WISH this house had a 3 car garage. It's the only thing it's missing but I'm trying; for once in my life, to have a clean, well organized garage.

Yesterday making those little shelves it was so nice using the retractable extension cord and air hose to power my contractor table saw and tack it all together. SO much less hassle than before. I'll get where I want it soon (I hope!)

THIS close to being done.

The roofers finished today and I'm very pleased with their work.

Remaining work:
1. Drywall repair/paint in utility room where they cut into wall above breaker panel for access.
2. Final stucco color coat...very soon I think.
3. Audio/video install once final stucco is on.
4. Gates to be installed by sub. Nearer to Christmas we've been told

That'll be a wrap.

Looks like it's always been there because it was always supposed to be! Ha ha.

Folks nowadays are a bit too fastidious to manure a wall or roof, but it was standard practice. It feeds the little things that grow in the surface of the facing materials, and changes the color. The other thing you could do is bleach the old tiles, and gently pressure wash them. But, the manuring is usually easier.

Pretty much didn't do a damn thing in the garage today. I felt lazy, got up late, watched "Meet The Press" and some football then finally felt I should do something:

My dad kept some spare drill bits in an old card file - back when card files were metal. I sanded and sprayed it just to refresh it. The drill bits in it have surface rust. I know Evaporust would work but I'm trying to stay home. Does apple cider vinegar work? I ask because we happen to have a gallon of it already.

Also put a 2nd coat of water-based satin poly on the 1x8 I'm going to use as a backsplash on my clean bench. I need to get back and finish it.

This project has been on my To Do List and I finally started it today. I keep finishing them and new ones keep getting added, ha ha.

Two wooden tables came with us from the old house. This one was a sideboard in the kitchen. It's in good shape except the cutting board top needed belt sanding. the rest I hit with my palm sander.

The other one is a simple pine desk. - a 2nd hand (or 3rd, 10th...) but SWMBO (joking) likes it so I was asked to refinish it too. The request is for BLUE stain and poly finish. I've never stained anything with a primary color before and I can say I'm not all that in favor of it, but I'll give it my best shot.

More pic's to come. Hope they come out good!

My dad had those card files down in his basement and he kept tools for his lathe in them and he would drill holes in the lid and wire one tool to it so he would know what was in each one.

I have a few things my dad had besides his masonry tools and some automotive tools I'll never use like ring compressors, ridge reamer, etc. But I can't bring myself to get rid of them. It sort of strikes me as disloyal as I know he struggled his whole life to acquire things for himself. Again, memories I suppose.

THIS close to finishing the patio work. Plasterers were here today to apply the "bonding coat" and will be back Thursday to apply the final color coat. They were fastidious as all get out - frankly just like our contractor, Brandon and all his subs so far. Concrete finishers, roofers, painter and plasterers each has been top notch. We lucked out.

Plasterers applied final stucco color coat and the structure is done.

Painter will touch up a couple little plaster splashes & dirty finger prints outside, then a little bit of paint inside and other than the gates, that's a wrap!

Audio/video guys were here yesterday installing Sonos 2 amplifiers and connecting the speakers that were already here in ceiling. Old owners took whatever they had connected to them but they're good quality. 2 new exterior speakers were installed too.

Now that the final stucco is done, the outdoor tv will be installed Monday along with a Sonos bar. If I understand this all correctly via an app on our phone we'll be able to control tv, music, etc and where the sound will be heard in three "zones". More pics coming.

Your remodel is moving along very well.
They start on replacing my roof next week and I have had guys here every Saturday for 2 months replacing wroughted wood and windows and after the roof the house will get a fresh paint job.
I know how inconvenient these project become. Happy you are at the end of yours

Looks really good, Dan. Your contractor did a great job, getting it done and out of there before the holidays was a great present to you and your girlfriend. Enjoy your new space!
(When is the housewarming party?) ;-)

For some reason I was thinking your house was a relatively new build.:wtf:

All the stuff you list above is the stuff we'd planned on doing to our Pasadena house plus refinishing hardwood floors and replacing the patio shade arbor. After a discussion and realizing EVERYTHING would have to be moved out and back in, we'd have contractors in & out for a year - that was the deciding factor in moving - watch out!!:bounce: It'd be hard as hell to move the excellent BPG!

Agree, it really will be nice to start the new year with the work done and the RV and boat home for good! Back in Jan/Feb we really were thinking we'd throw a big housewarming party when we picked a house then obviously that fantasy came crashing down. Right now it's looking like a Memorial St. Patrick de Mayo the 4th party is more likely!

Yes Dan moving is not an option at this point. I've lived in this home for 15 years. it was a home owner build finished in 1994 so it is a bit aged and maybe a few shortcuts were made while under construction. It is a very nice home however and we plan on being buried here so it's all good.

Thanks you guys for your continued interest!

Don, if you don’t mind post a thread about your house related work. I’m a construction junkie these days. I suppose from being away from it after managing construction so many years. I always had great curiosity to see “what they’ll do next” and great satisfaction when I saw completion of the day’s work.

Dan, everything looks great. It's an added bonus when you don't have to ride your contractors to do a good job and clean up!
You're going to love the SONOS system - we have it throughout our new house here and it's pretty intuitive and easy to use. Lots of music choices too!

Thanks for the kind words, Gary!

We spent the day on the patio today listening to Pandora via the Sonos - and the under TV bar won't even be installed til Monday.

I was finishing and reassembling tables and she was washing dust off the patio, the metal tables, vacuuming the cushions etc. We arranged things for what I'm sure will be the first of dozens of times until she gets it like she wants.

I'd have never chosen blue stain for the tables and though it looks ok in the pics it's splotchy as hell in person.:eyecrazy: She says it's supposed to look that way! I sanded everything bare, use pre-stain sealer and it STILL came out like this. Oh well, as long as she likes it.

Back to the garage!

Finally mounted the backsplash for the clean bench and used up some particle board leftovers to make shallow shelves in cabinets the old owners left in garage. If I store stuff behind one another I never use it. For me, best to be able to see it all if possible.

I used to keep a LOT of leftover paint - no more. I'm keeping this much ^^^ max and throw out the rest. Patio painter left a 5 gallon can w/ a little in it. I'm gonna buy a bare gallon from Home Cheapo to eliminate having a giant container that's almost empty.
