Between 265 & 485 SQ/FT The Jungle

Been trying to teach my self to TIG as well. Welds look great! The shop is awesome too. When I was first looking to build a shop back in Oklahoma I had thought about something similar to this.

Finished the second workbench today, and prepped all my receivers for the second and third benches, and was able to adjust the first one to fit the cabinets perfectly.

I’m stoked about how the receivers came out, I will make an easy hand tightened set screw for each and leave them in there I think.





Not a ton of thread but it’s M12 1.75, should be ok. I can always weld a nut on if I need to.



I’m hoping to use these to attach whatever I need, trying to avoid drilling the eventual benchtop as much as possible.

I’ve been thinking of a way to attach lights without welding to the container or building supports of some sort. I read somewhere about using strong magnets to attach lighting to containers... so....

3 of these should be plenty for each 8’ run on a 1x1/2 piece of PVC trim board and single LED shop lights. I’d say all that together would weigh roughly what the sawzall and drill weigh alone.



To top it off, absolutely smashed my last week of fantasy, good lord Aaron Rogers put on a show today.

TIG was/is very hard for me, it’s the left/right brain stuff of having my hands doing different things that is the challenge. Of course everyone on YouTube makes it look easy... I don’t think I’m going to be showing anyone my aluminum welds anytime soon, they still look terrible.

I’m really digging the container tbh.. however, the more I work in it the more I feel the lack of space, but I can’t complain. It’s not the forever shop but for now it’s more than I could hope for.

Due to complaints I am now required to wear pants anytime I leave my house be it long or short but I normally don't put long pants on until it gets below 60 F

Some progress and one step backwards I think...

Progress would be getting the first part of the shelving system built. I do have to modify this a tad, and I’m thinking I will shorten the width it a bit. 24” width is just too much and I feel as though I’m going to hit my head when working. Other than that, I think it’s going to work great. I was planning on using 2x12 for an overall width of ~23”, but I’m thinking 2x10 now for an overall width of ~20”.

I measured out the full length of shelving and I think I will be able to use full 24’ boards for a perfect and seamless shelf all along the side.





I hung off the outside and bounced all 240lbs of myself on this single shelf support... didn’t care whatsoever. I think it will be great for any load I put up there.

Finally, I put up some of the new lights to test fit... and I really don’t like them. They are 6000k and just WAY to blue/white for my liking. I’m going to pick up some alternate fixtures today that are 4000k and see how it works. That aside, my system for attaching the lights works like a charm! 80lb magnets on the back of a PVC trim board:









However, they work great for my other - storage specific container. Super easy installation and I don’t care what the light looks like, only that there is some light:



Should have a bunch of updates this weekend... I get two full days to work on stuff, I’m excited!

If you have access to a plasma cutter or the like you can easily cut doors in the sides too. Hard to beat the bang/buck for a container for sqft and security. I couldn’t have built a comparable framed structure for $3500, so it was a no brainer.

I've done quite a few mods to conex boxes through the years. We use them for mobile work shops and long term storage out in the side yard at the shop. I have cut doors into the side, holes for vent fans, etc. The walls on the boxes are only 1/8" thick. Pierce it with a grinder and then make the cut with a sawzall. Wear hearing protection as it is ungodly loud. Please also be aware that a good amount of these boxes are full of lead paint. Wear a respirator when removing the paint.

Krang, I really like the way this is turning out. I had to smile at the tree falling on the roof right after you finished. A good test for the roof and the vehicle the tree intended to dent came away unscathed.

The containers are not parallel, that’s odd I know but it gives me more space on one end.. it was quite fun to build the roof!

One of the reasons the container works so well here is because it’s sealed. I just hate making holes in stuff if I don’t have to.... besides it’s a challenge =p

I had to make holes =(

Through bolted every 4’, double 2x6 bottom plate, hurricane ties (galvanized strip) every 4’ wrapped up either side of the wing wall.

I figured if I ever needed to I could just fill everything with plugs, but it was the best method to attach the plates to the roof of the containers.

Eventually pour a slab so I don’t have to work in gravel, but that’s $$. I’m saving for it though. Then, either a garage door or a barn door of sorts on either end.

As far as attaching things to the walls/ceiling of the containers - weld a 1/4" thick pad at least 2"x2" and then weld your attachment to that. Spreads the load out. You do not have to weld the pad 100%. Be careful welding on the skin of the box as it is fairly thin and it's easy to blow through it. Also, wear a respirator whenever disturbing the paint on the box as a good amount of them have very high levels of lead in the paint.

I've welded a lot to the skin of containers. Be sure to scrap the paint off on the other side ASAP as it will catch fire and burn like crazy.

How are u powering ur garage? U said u didn't have 220.

0 gauge extension cord for now. She’s a biggun. I try and keep power consumption down as much as possible through using LED’s though. So far so good.

Most of this stuff is thin gauge. I didn’t even think of preheating the thicker stuff, and I don’t have a torch to do that either way, but that’s a good idea.

I usually don’t need to preheat when I TIG as I can just pedal through it and go slower.

As I had hoped... lots of progress today.

- 2nd workbench is in
- almost an entire side of shelf hangars is up
- warmer lights are up (Costco 4000 lumen ones) the magnet system is working great so far. One magnet per light.
- played around with the shelving system, I’m going to need some tinkering to get it just right... I also discovered they will work as tire totes, didn’t design at all for that. Having them modular like that means I can swap back and forth if needed, I’m stoked.

Second bench in, and leveled. Hung all my shelf hangars:


Most of the boxes are in. The second 5 drawer craftsman box needs to be cleaned and repainted, so I took that one outside for later:




Thankfully all the heights work. I just hope Costco doesn’t stop selling those clear plastic totes. These will have full shelves consisting of two 2x10’s, I used what I had available for mock up:




Discovered randomly that the hangars will work as tire totes, this is awesome:


I was going to build specific hangars for the tires to replace this death trap, but now I can just mass produce the shelf hangars!


New Year’s Day will be the wood portion of the bench tops and the wood portion of the backsplash. Going to HD tomorrow for the marine ply, MDF, and some self tapping screws. Coming so close to finished on this side but before I can get the stainless tops to the sheet metal place I need to resize my full size pickup pipe racks to Tacoma sized pipe racks. I can’t transport 4x10’ sheets of metal any other way.

This thing of using containers is very ingenious.
The coolest thing I remember seeing is Flynn's house in Tron.
Your thread made me think a lot about using containers for a house. YouTube is full of cool projects involving containers. I didn't know that.
