During Dungeness Crab season I swear I could walk across Ludlow Bay from my beach on the pot markers.
Had a neighbor who loved to crab, but was allergic to them, It worked out well for the neighborhood.

I miss fresh Pacific salmon, fresh crab, fresh shrimp. Warm water seafood just doesn't match up.
Had a guy working for me years ago on Whidbey who would go out almost every morning before dawn and check his pots , fish , or do some *********. He only kept what he and his family could eat that day, plus some to bring to the job for me. It was great having fresh stuff almost every day. He also had a dog , Rusty, that was half golden retriever/half Newfie (hence his name) . 150 lb dog would go out in that rowboat with him .

I’m looking forward to being able to live like that, of course, when I have the time , I won’t have the money for gas because, you know, life is like that.(run on sentence)

I love taking Ranger along for the ride. He’s become a good boat dog. Settles right down and enjoys the ride.

And, he helps keep the bow down!

I love crab, but tend to over do it early in the season.
Later on, I give most of it away.

Trying something new.

Wife brought home a rather large Coho.

Too much for two people. Needed something to do with the rest.

Working late on the skiff this evening.

Completely caulked the gaps with cotton using caulking irons, followed with below the waterline seam compound. Should have the bottom done tomorrow.

Then tackle the sides before flipping it over and starting on the inside.

Traditional purist can laugh at my caulking mallet, but it worked great!

Thanks Jim,

Here’s a pic of some traditional ship caulking tools I ripped from the web.

They mallet has a ring to it similar to an anvil, and caused many a shipwright to go deaf.

Y’all ever F anything up?

Any of you take pride in reading, comprehending, AND following written instructions?

I skipped a step today.

Cotton, prime, sealing compound.

I went straight from cotton to compound. It’s cold outside, so I left the primer inside.

Out of sight, out of mind.

I just cleaned up 72 lineal feet of nasty, sticky, half dried goo off the bottom of the boat.

Live and learn, and never forget to read (and comprehend)the manufacturer’s instructions.

Puget/Tool,

It’s kinda like skiing.

If you’re not falling down, you’re not trying hard enough.

Lucky for me, I enjoy a good mess once in awhile.

Test fire.
First time starting up my little Johnson this season.

Running a little rougher than I’d like, and wants to die at slow idle.

Buying batteries at Jiffy Lube is never a good idea.

Haven’t had to replace the 2014 battery, most likely original.
Good news is, no more misfires.
Accelerates like a twin turbo V6 should!

The ol’ 77 fires right up now. No more hard starts!

Almost feeling like a real mechanic

Continuing on with the playing mechanic tonight.

Doing a little cleaning, a little reading, and a little YouTube, trying to figure out my 1971 Johnson 9.5.

Cleaning (excavating-think hardened ear wax) ‘71 grease ain’t much fun.

Only when you use them in conjunction with a HF blowgun and PVC airlines.

I hear HF screwdrivers make good gunk scrapers. :lol_hitti

Jay

Didn’t want to get my fancy orange handles dirty.

I did finally figure out why it wasn’t spinning the prop in either forward or reverse.

$3.59 shear pin. I ordered 2.

Got an opportunity to play boat repair man, on a Monday!

Weather cooperated, so I drug the fiberglass skiff out and did a final sand of the bottom and stern.

Rolled out a coat of Epifanes. For the bottom, it will only
Be a single coat..

Once dry and cured, I’ll finish sand the sides and do at least two coats-where it shows!

Riv, that’s looking really good. Bright white looks so clean on a boat.
Better get ‘er done; Dungeness crab season is just around the corner.

Thank you.

I can’t wait to see the red on the side detail/curve.

I also need to start polishing the aluminum trim that holds the rubber bumper strip. Not really looking forward to that:scared:

As for crabbing, that happens in the bigger boat.
Winds come up to fast around here, and it can turn ugly quick.

Feels good to drop back and fix your F-ups.

Stripped the red goo out of all my joints, resanded, and touched up the cotton.

Then primed the joints, the way the directions say it’s supposed to be done.

I’ll let the whole thing cure up over the weekend, then re-apply the seam sealer.

This time on top of the primer:rocker:

The new guy seems nice.

Got a lot of block sanding done on the fiberglass skiff today, til it started hailing on me.

Finished getting the glass boat 1st coated with the Epifanes.
Going to be some additional sanding prior to 2nd coat.

I was really hoping the 1st coat would look good enough.

Then went to the wooden rowboat, and got the bottom caulked and primed.

The gaps were consistent enough that I went with the cotton string type.
A few areas were to wide and some skinny, had to use the loose cotton and adjust to fit.

Once dry, it’ll be ready for the seem sealer.

Didn’t get much time to play with the new(to me) aluminum skiff:(

Another late night, working on boats.

Wooden boat no. 2 got the bottom joints sealed. It’s ready to sand and paint.
Sides got caulked with the string and some cotton. They’re ready to prime and seal. Hope the wife doesn’t miss the dinner knife I modified.

Also tackled the engine cover from the little Johnson that goes with the gheenoe.
Somebody gave it a ****** camo rattle can hack job. Time to make it pretty.

Nice work on the boats Riv, I would like to try a wooden boat but around here you cant touch one. My buddy float tested his last week to check for leaks and balance he cut the transom off and rebuilt it then added a three foot platform onto that then the motor.20210317_115707.jpegreceived_746541289558892.jpg

Sent from my SM-A102U using The Garage Journal mobile app

Thanks Jim,

Be sure to tell your friend I said “that’s a nice looking boat!”

Getting an early start to my weekend!

One last round of scraping, sanding, making sure fasteners are sunk adequately, filling fasteners, and hopefully a coat of primer.
