Was at Darthmouth Crossing CT this weekend to check/see the new 'Maximum' boxes.
They had all the new 'Maximum' boxes in.Love Dartmouth Crossing CT,it's the biggest CT store in Canada I believe. The store is huge.

Here's the new 57" black 'Maximum' box

Here's the new 47" blue 'Maximum' box

They also had the new 41" all flat black 'Maximum' box and the new 56" solo bottom stainless steel 'Maximum' box but I didn't get pics of them as I figured the new 57" black 'Maximum' box and the new 47" blue 'Maximum' box were the real eye candy boxes. You can see a bit of the new 41" all flat black 'Maximum' box in the left of the new 47" blue 'Maximum' box pic.

The 57" is on sale this week for 40-50% off or $1500 for the set. Thinking about about picking it up.

Anyone review these new series of boxes? I would honestly prefer the older style, my dad has it and he loves the old one with the wood top.

As far as i know, the new Maximum boxes are the same as the previous gen Mastercraft Maximum boxes, same build, just different esthetics.

Got a 15pc Maximum screwdriver set for $15 today. Sale runs until Sunday I think.

They feel great, better than the Mastercraft sets I've been using for years. I'll bring these ones to work and take home the ones they're replacing so I have more here at the house (flathead screwdrivers seem to disappear)

Traded my Maximum 20v max lithium ion cordless drill/driver in for the new Maximum 20v max lithium ion cordless drill/hammer driver.
Got the Maximum 20v max lithium ion cordless drill/driver about a year ago along with the new Maximum 20v max lithium ion cordless 1/2" impact wrench, new Maximum 12a grinder and new Maximum 10a reciprocating saw when the new Maximum power tools line came out, knew they were eventually gunna bring out a drill/hammer driver version of that drill/driver and they did.

The Maximum 20v max lithium ion cordless drill/driver I traded (350 in-lbs/tq).

The new Maximum 20v max lithium ion cordless drill/hammer driver version (500 in-lbs/tq).

Its a beast,love it.

builttolast, you're pretty diehard with your CT tools. I've never really even considered mastercraft for power tools. Do they really even measure up to the big names? For me, anything requiring a battery pack, I first look at rigid. They are typically well reviewed and they are the only manufacturer that offers a lifetime warranty on their batteries (as far as I know at least).

Yes,i like my Mastercraft/Maximum tools.

Buddy of mine at work has almost all Rigid power tools,he likes them,iv used his drill/driver a few times, works good.

As for the Maximum power tools, they perform very well, lots of power,no let downs and with a 5 year warranty, better then most power tool brands, even the big brands, most only have 3 year warranty.

That same buddy from work was over a few days ago for a beer,i was showing him all my Mastercraft/Maximum tools (mainly the power tools) he was impressed.

Lately I've found CT tools to be pretty average. Box-store quality with walmart-style cost cutting.

I have an Mastercraft electric DA sander that worked ok when it was new, but the bearing seized up after about 3 months. I replaced it with an SKF bearing and the difference was amazing. It works much better now than when it was new.

A few years ago I bought Mastercraft a jointer/planer from them. The quality was so bad that it wouldn't even function out of the box . I returned it.

I broke a MAstercraft snap-ring plier while working on a snowmobile clutch. They refused to warrant it.
I borrowed a benchmark (home Hardware) plier and broke it on the same job. the ring was rusted, but I was using the tools correctly. HH replaced it no questions. So I bought one for myself. I've since bought most of my tools there.

The only way I buy tools from CTC now is if I have gift certificate and the item is deeply discounted

Trainer,
Lol.I dont think anyone/company will ever stoop to the low Wal-Marts standards/cheap/cost cutting way.Believe me,Canadian Tire is nowhere near Wal-Marts way.
Wal-Mart=the cheap of cheap of cheap.

Keep in mind,Canadian Tire and Wal-Mart are 2 totally different companys.Canadian Tire is "tools/automotive".Wal-Mart is "little bit of everything".

I'm not so sure about that.

Thier assortments are a bit different, but they both fall into the category of "mass merchants"

My local CTC store is a huge one, 90,000+ sq ft. They recently cut the size of thier automotive section in half and put an expanded section of cheap knock-down furniture and home decor in its place.

They cut back on thier seasonal section where the barbecues and snowblowers live and put in clothing. Mostly women's clothing.

In Hockey equipment, you find the same brands as specialty stores, but the models are unique to CT. Lower priced, more cheaply made, different COO.
Wal-mart does this to just about every brand name that comes into thier back door.

They are selling groceries now... including a line of thier own line called "frank"
Apparently the name "sam" was taken.

The main aisles are always cluttered with pallets of merchandise, just like Wallyworld.

Trainer,

I guess it depends on the CT store.Really none of the stores in my area carry grocerys or indoor home decor furniture, but carry patio sets/bbqs ofcourse.Mainly tools, hardware, automotive and hocky.

Dartmount Crossing CT is one of my areas CT stores, its the biggest CT store in Canada, its huge. The tool department and automotive department take up half the store.

Does anyone have any of the cordless 1/2" impact wrenches? There are several different ones at different price points and torque ratings and they're all on sale right now...been wanting to get a cordless.

Anyone use em?

Kinda off topic, but does the "tested for life in Canada" marketing bug anyone else? What does that even mean? I'd love to see the criteria for these "tests". It's like Coors calling their beer "cold certified". I'd like to think that we as consumers are smarter than they seemingly give us credit for, but considering the amount of time and money than goes into marketing studies, apparently we are not.

That's not a stupid question.

Mastercraft is a house brand for our big chain tool/supply store called Canadian Tire. If it's available in the states I've never heard of it.

I've heard the argument that lots of Mastercraft power tools are rebranded versions of other companies gear. IE x company makes tools for Canadian Tire, so they slap Mastercraft cases on them.

Welp, I have a garage full of C-tire and a fridge full of Coors Banquet... :dunno:

Guess that means next time I go to canada I better stop in a canadian tire with a shopping list. Or see if I can get a catalog and try to call the store and order that way. Just like the looks of some of there tools.

Myself and all of the other technicians at work use them every day in a dealership setting. Not all of our gear is Mastercraft obviously, but with a Canadian Tire store nextdoor and the ease of returning broken tools/lifetime warranty on most tools, it just makes sense for some of our stuff to be MC.

Only things I've ever had to return were pry bars and torx bits.

Time it with a sale. Otherwise you'll pay too much. You can see whats on at canadiantire.ca And if you go to the auto parts locator you can laugh at what we Canucks have to pay for car parts (bwd at that) and the miserable selection we have in general of brands. (Different brands can be had from regular auto suppliers, but the prices remain about the same if you don't get a discount).

They no longer have a paper catalog.

That's the trouble with Canadian Tire's branded tools. They're a little overpriced at regular price. On sale, they're a smoking good deal. So you have to plan your purchases in advance. Plus they're the nastiest company with the skips in their sets. You can spend more on 3 missing wrenches bought singly than you spent on the set of 10 that they're completing.

I'm rather surprised they haven't got with the times and added an online store. I live in a small enough city that both my C-Tire stores are 10 minutes away but for guys like my dad who live an hour out of town I imagine they'd have a good response.

CT is very automated and up there on technology, if I had to guess, it might be an agreement with their franchise owners. Not so much in major metropolitan area, but as you get into the extended burbs and rural areas, online purchasing could cut into these franchises enough to not stay in business.

Bottom line regardless of where the store is, it is a revenue loss for all stores.

I would bet this is the reason too. They don't want to compete with their customer, the franchisee. Of course, they're losing sales overall.

Got the 1/2" 20v cordless impact today. It's a great time saver and goes perfectly in between my 1/4" 14v cordless and my 1200K air gun.

I'm in the states, I have an older "travel" set of mastercraft tools, I paid 3$ for them missing the 1/2 inch socket. Over all ehh, rather use my older craftsman and snap-on sockets/wrenches. Master craft is just to shiny ha

Some good sales on this week, starting Friday. Particularly the 14pc Maximum wrench set for 22 bucks. A few wrench sets on sale, actually...some good deals on their die grinders, impact, air ratchets as well.
