So I need your thoughts,

I’m debating between the M12 ratchet or the M12 right angle impact. Could the M12
ratchet, with the right bits of course, drive 3” screws if I wanted it to? I’m trying to avoid buying two tools and I think the ratchet has more utility for my needs.

All decent electric chainsaws are highly impressive, courtesy of their torque. Don't even bother wearing chaps...they won't bind it.

I think that's the old wisdom that I always thought was right on track. The youtube vids I've seen show chaps stopping electric saws. It would be worth checking out via a safety experts rather than relying on youtube though.

I don’t think the M12 ratchet would be good for driving 3” screws. It’s not an impact, has very modest torque, and drives very slowly.

No...the ratchet would just stall in my opinion. And I'm not even going to try to find out.


I have both the RA impact and also the M12 RA drill. The drill will sink many screws easily too.

Or is getting an impact driver good for car stuff and in the end more versatile???

For car stuff I'd get the 3/8 M12 stubby. It's borderline on lug nuts in my experience. I've had some it took right off and some it didn't.. though the ones it didn't take off required a special socket to turn the lug nuts, then you used another socket on the end of it, so I'm sure it was losing some torque because of that. It ended up being impact wrench-->18mm socket-->lug nut key'd socket-->lug nuts where normally you'd just have the socket going right on the lug nuts

Still... M12 stubby is hard to beat

If you want something that you are SURE will take them off, the mid-torque M18 is a good option, but obviously bigger/heavier

Impact driver is best for smaller lag bolts, deck screws, etc. I was able to get it to crack loose a lug nut after a few seconds of hammering, but that's definitely not its intended use. I plan to use it on low settings for small interior/engine bay fasteners.

Based on the ability of my 1/4 hex fuel impact driver to crack loose a lugnut torqued to 110lbft, I sure hope that the M12 stubby impact WRENCH would be able to reliably knock off most lugnuts as long as they aren't rusted or siezed up. (It's rated for 2.5x the torque).

I'd say both have their place in your automotive toolbox.

Only issue I had (besides the bit falling out ) was that I was using phillips screws and if I pushed down too hard, the ratchet would "skip". If I pushed lighter, it drove them fine - no shortage of power from the tool.

I might be cheating on Milwaukee a little w/ Greenlee (makita). I’m gonna try to get their cordless inline bolt cutters. If milwaukee makes a set - this is the style i imagine they will release. Check these things out.. $1400... ETS12’s.

I've got an MS170 and Labonville chaps that are a few years old. Everything I read when I bought them said chaps wouldn't stop an electric saw. That was then I guess. I don't know how any mfr could sell an electric saw if chaps couldn't protect the user, so it must be OK? Dunno, but I have that old warning stuck in my head.

Well the addiction has finally started after the clerk at HD spent about 20 minutes searching for where in the overhead storage this kit was placed

M12 Fuel Hammer Drill/Driver, Impact, charger, 2 batteries and a packout case for $199 out the door in tax free Delaware

Out of curiosity, what size batteries did this setup come with? Same as 2598-22 (1-2a, 1-4a)?

Edit: found a store that had some left. Comes with 2- 2A batteries

Just noticing, the cable cutters are not a “Fuel” tool.. wonder why.. The second trigger is only a pressure relief switch. I assume theres a spring inside or a vacuum chamber forcing the jaws to open once the pressure is taken off.

Some carbide blades might be in order for the sawzall, but i just handed over 5 pages of tool requests so those can wait. All in, i now have 8 brand new m18 batteries being kept ON the truck. Much more than i need, but insurance against thieves. All the 9.0 batteries that came with our light lowers have gone MIA apparently. Hopefully at least on a truck somewhere, but i doubt it.

Not pictured is the new Fuel Lineman impact, and M18 Chainsaw. Hopefully a new search light and m18 rover will join the party.

There's an M12 version that appears to be identical other than the battery platform. They were announced at NPS 19, but they got almost no coverage.

Yup, 2x 2.0s. There also was (maybe still is?) an alternate version of the kit that replaced a 2.0 with a 4.0 but downgraded the packout case to a soft bag for $230. My coworker chose to go that route.

I own the backpack vacuum. Bought it used off eBay for $250, I use it with a 9.0 battery. Able to do the entire house. Love the power and convenience. My wife also uses it. She says it's heavy but not too bad once it's on her back.
Don't have a Dyson to compare it to, but I'm sure it has more power with a larger battery (e.g. 12Ah)

It's also really quiet on the low setting. Usually the low setting is all we use too.

Well, I started drinking the kool-aid today, picked up the 3/8 stubby and the grease gun. Still have to decide on batteries. Still want to do a drill / driver combo, angle grinder, and maybe the 3/8 ratchet. This will be replacing a Porter Cable setup that has served me well for years, but with no new tools coming out from them it was time to make a switch.
