Hey All...Again I will preface by saying this is my real first time being here. Thanks for having me and thanks to Ryan.
I have had shops at our homes, but all have been established since buying previous homes... this is my first build for my own shop.
Pretty Stoked.

It was time in our lives to down-size. My wife and I finally agreed after living on 2 big rural properties... just too much maintenance ,too much yard work.
... so we bought a quaint 1250 sq.ft. home... built in 1910, that was completely renovated.
In our area(rural) we moved to a very small town,Population under a 1000, A historic small town close to Lake Huron. The area is know for the yellow brick homes in this area.. we just love it and it fits our needs..... except no shop.

I need a shop and studio....

So, during the hectic times of selling, buying..I enlisted my good friend George(a GC) who helped us a ton and built our last home to help me get this project going.
It's very convenient ,.. George lives 3 blocks away.First things in order were to see if I could get permits to build. No issue there. the property is a good size like within the town.
166 deep and 66 wide.
So with the towns approval we set out to begin... the week after we moved in.All my tools, toys and general shop stuff is buried in 2 40 foot sea cans for the time being, while my cars are stored at a friends shop.
So..... working within the townships guideline and of course... Budget,... I had a set of plans drawn up for a 42x30 building. It will have a second floor for an office/studio/storage area....
Of course I wanted a massive much bigger shop.. but lessons from the past have told me...bigger mean more cost.. and with the local rules and codes.. this is where we landed.
The property has a deep grade in the back.. so.. water drainage and such was a big consideration.

I plan to mimic somewhat the house.... same colours and such, I want it all to be the same feel.So... We came up with some drawings.
(please ignore the garage door style.....thats not happening.)

Steel building, gables and a Black steel roof.

Interestingly,.... while the excavation was in play.. found an old Indian gas n Oil porcelain sign buried 20 feet down.... shame.... a 8K sign literally destroyed...... but,..... it was probably thrown there in the 1930's.... this was a farm way back then....

If rescued and put back together (not perfectly), this could be a fun piece of artwork hanging in your new building...
I could see it might need a bit of dollying, solid sheet metal backing to hold it together with rivets etc...
A nice conversation piece relating to what was discovered during your build..

Good to see ya over here too.

All your old shops have been neat, I'm sure this one will be too.

looks like the shop will make a nice privacy screen for the neighbors behind you.
I have met all the neighbours,.... except them.. I plan to plant some vegetation back there so they aren't staring at a big concrete wall.... But. that won't be for a while yet...next fall probably .

Well... gotta report the Good,Bad and the Ugly.
Framing has begun.... unfortunately ... concrete was postponed,... Trusses delivered..... then... we lost against Mother Nature.
A snow storm dumped 2 feet in 24 hours.....

The shop floor was (fortunately) covered with plywood and insulation tarps..... but the boys cleared as much snow as possible and are installing the trusses today....
We have a full week of snow forecasted for the week.Another possible 2 feet on the way.

Marching forward.......

Can't believe the crew continues to work in that weather. Nice looking place, will follow along. I'm in the middle of my build too. Just waiting on warm enough weather to pour concrete for the floor now.

I agree Dan... but it's just what they do.I have a ton of respect for these guys.

You are very fortunate that you found a good crew...slim pickin's up here. It seems like contractors in Maine are either wildly over priced or totally incompetent:sad:
I completely agree!..... Our GC (George) is a great guy and has turned out to be a good friend. The back story... George built our last home and we struck up a friendship.. he would do maintenance work for us and small projects. So when we moved to this location.. he lives 2 blocks away and was familiar with the home.
I think it really pays to have the locals do the job, keeping within our town.... George was the one who hired the guys... so they have all known each other since kids.... George is tireless......
BTW.. we recently spent time in Coastal Maine for Thanksgiving... and I was marvelling the beautiful architecture of homes and garages in the area we visited..... love that "Maine" Look of early homes.....
Very Nice..... As well as the styles in Boston as well.... just classic.

Work continues at a great pace.. the weather is very mild today.... so the work is getting done at an incredible rate...
Strapping the rear of the shop and around the building. Steel will be the final covering layer.

Very nice....how thick is the wall insulation?
The outer EnergySheild insulation is 1 inch thick.... construction of the wall frames are a 2x6.Speaking of insulation for the interior, rafters, etc, etc will be a combination of Pink Bats, Roxall and blown in cellulose in the roof attic.
I am not a fan of blown in spray foam insulation.... kinda makes any future wiring amendments near impossible at a later date.
