When I first started reading this, I pictured the location of the barn being way out , by itself. Neighbors not so close. But at least you are next to a asphalt road, so that makes it easier to get to.

Lift looks great, could use a little more height but should work fine. That's my next big investment I think.

When you say a little more height, where would I need that additional height? The lift bay ceiling is 2' taller than the lift. The lift raises the vehicle 6'8"....just wondering where you thought the additional height would be needed.

Maybe its an optical illusion, the picture makes it look like its closer than it is?

Lol, cool. Yeah, you had me wondering if I made a mistake in there!! A little late now, but had me worried just he same...lol

I have had my Tundra all the way up on it, didn't touch anything...even with the hood up!

Well, correction....my dual band Ham antenna does touch the ceiling when it's all the way up.

That's a cool place you have there BigNuge. The lift corridor is especially cool where you have the work space around it and the height is great. I'd love to have a lift but it doesn't fit into my budget nor my shop. I can't believe that place is that old and you've done an awesome job on the repairs. Lot's of work for sure.

I'm so sorry to hear about the loss of your brother. Man, that has to be tough. I have three sisters and one fought and won her breast cancer battle and it was scary as hell.

I've subscribed and will be following along on this build.

Another great thread refurbishing an aged structure! A Lot of great ideas, and wow, plenty of head room in the middle with phenomenal lighting to go with. This will certainly make for a great service bay! If you continue to isolate the lower level, heating that space shouldn't be too costly.

Subscribed!

Thanks for the compliments guys!

I've been working on (in) the barn over the last couple days. Assembled my new 72" roll box. Got the dual fuel (wood/oil) furnace up and running, it does a great job! And the lower level isn't sectioned off yet!!

I'll be checking back in with an update once I've got a little more done.

Thanks for following!

Ok, so I finally got things wrapped up for the winter. Got all the partitions and interior doors built & up. Got the oil burner set up and piped for oil, tank gets filled next week.

You know it's strange when it makes fiscal sense to heat your shop with oil rather than wood!

Got the storage area in the back half of the barn organized, and got all the machines back there (lawn tractor, all 3 4wheelers).

Oh, and I got the place cleaned up.

Did a small job (O2 sensor, oil change, tire rotation) in there too.

Love it! Great mix of old and new. Looks very functional, but still has character.

Now you can start with the Cougar restoration!

Lol, you guys aren't gonna let me go not that car huh??

I'll get to it guys, in due time!

Right now I'm focused on my next property purchase, so the Cougar has to wait a while....unfortunately.

For now I'll be doing small projects on a couple of my regular vehicles.

Thanks guys!

Madoc, I did decide against tenant storage. Figured that was an issue waiting to happen. I'm glad I did. I love the place so much, I couldn't imagine letting a tenant in there to store ****.

I have a handful of repair jobs lined up now, let the fun begin!

Next up is siding in the Spring/Summer.

The place looks fantastic! I like all the photos and now I feel like I have actually been in there to see it. Lots of great work space and the keg coffee table is cool. I also like the big work table that you can access from all sides.

Super cool space.

Where and how did you mount your fuel oil tank?

I am undecided on mounting mine indoors or outdoors......both have pros and cons. :dunno:

Thanks guys...

Stiney, I mounted the tank in the unconditioned storage space near the furnace (inside).

If you live in a cold climate I highly suggest mounting your tank inside (if possible). If the tank is subject to sub freezing temperatures and wind then you'd need to go with a blend. Up here in the northeast all outdoor tanks get a blend (K1 & #2). Indoor tanks can still take straight #2.

Mine still gets cold, but it is not outside in the wind & weather. It makes quite a difference being protected from the wind.

I'll take a few pictures and post them up over the weekend.

I got the oil burner fired, but the CAD cell is bad. Got the new cell today, and will have it in tomorrow.

I'm still looking for a 6V battery that I bought new. It was on the vise stand and moved it around every other day. So I put it someplace where I wouldn't lose it, well its not lost but I sure can't find it. :dunno:

Very cool!

Are going to be utilizing your barn as a side business doing auto repairs? Seems like the perfect setup, considering the height and lighting you've acquired.

Just doing work on friends and family's vehicles....nothing for $$$

Not saying I wouldn't barter some repairs for other work that I don't do....but mainly for my own work, as well as friends and family.

I thoroughly enjoy doing this stuff....

That's awesome that you help out friends/family. I do the same with my shop, plus let a buddy that helped me along the way do side work so he can make some extra cash (He's a lead tech so if I ever get in over my head on a job he's always there to steer me in the right direction).

If your like me you like having an excuse to get out of the house and into the shop. Helping others is a good way to keep the wife off my back!

Well, I've had an interesting 5 days. Added some equipment to the shop that I thought would take me years to get.

So I was working at a client site that is local to me. My client contact tells me about a former employee that recently passed away unexpectedly (2 years before he was to retire). He proceeds to tell me that this man was a tool/equipment/machinery hoarder. Long story short, the wife of the deceased wants the property cleared of all tools and equipment ASAP. The mans only son is a computer/IT guy with absolutely no knowledge or interest in any of the tools/equipment/machinery.

A few things I was told up front: the wife of the deceased had already made an arrangement with the local vocational school to donate all of the machining equipment (this man had a full-on machine shop in his basement, his house is wired with 3 phase power). So all of the machine shop equipment/tooling/and raw materials go to the vocational school. I was bummed because I would have loved to grab his Bridgeport and begin learning the trade. Alas, that wasn't happening.

What was up for grabs was still amazing. Multiple small-mid size tractors, an impressive Gravely collection, numerous pieces of antique testing equipment (hydrostatic testers, audio testing equipment, electrical testing equipment....much much more). Far too much to list. I was in awe with the amount of stuff this guy has collected over the years.

What did I walk away with?? Well, first was an Econoline Super RA-24 sandblasting cabinet. It is missing it's vacuum, but the rest of it is there (controls/gun/regulator/foot valve etc.). I think I'll just use a shopvac on this unit, it's not like I'll be using it all that often. Second, a complete floor standing parts washer/cabinet. Third, a Southworth LS05 30 lift table (500# lift capacity) with the accordion lift boot option. Fourth, an American Forge & Foundry 1 ton mobile folding crane/engine hoist. Lastly, I got several pieces of the antique testers (my inner hoarder got ahold of me several times while pawing over this place). As well as several pieces of classic audio/stereo stuff (receiver, amp, etc).

All told I spent $260 on everything described above.

In addition to my score, I brought one of my uncles over who was interested in the Gravely equipment. At the end of the day, he walks away with every Gravely piece on the property. 3 running Gravely 10A's, 1 running Gravely Super Convertible, 5 other Gravely's in various states of completion...most rolling. Attachments for the Gravely's....2 snow blowers, 2 30" single blade mower decks, 1 sickle mower, 1 reel mower, 2 48" snow plows, 1 48" rotary sweeper, 1 rototiller, 1 turf/sod buster, 2 augers with vertical gear boxes. Numerous boxes of spare parts for the Gravely's.

*Forgot to mention the wire trencher attachment for the Gravely...

He also came away with 2 generators. One Onan 3kw gasoline portable, one older Sears & Roebuck 6kw LP fired stationary generator w/electric & crank handle start. Both in great shape, both running.

He spent $570 on his take.

I will likely be back to grab more. But I really don't need anything else [emoji38][emoji38]

I'll snap some picks of the new equipment in place once I have it ready. I was spent when I got home after moving all of that equipment yesterday [emoji44][emoji44]

Lol....when I first went over to look at this stuff I was told MAKE AN OFFER, we want it ALL GONE! I saw the sandblasting cabinet first, he saw that I liked it. His words, verbatim, "say a number, I want it gone". I say $20, without hesitation he says deal.

That's how the whole thing went. I'm glad I was part of the first wave!! I'm getting ready to head out to the shop now to set this stuff up...

At the end of the day the son knew he was giving this stuff away...he didn't care. He said his mom is not in need of money, she just wants the property cleaned out. He was more interested in seeing this equipment go to a good place where it will be used and not scraped.

That's sweet about all the stuff you picked up. All I could think about while reading was the saying "I hope my wife doesn't sell all my stuff for what I told her I bought it for". BTW, YOU ****.

well you here about stuff like that happening, glad you got in on the first's. Too bad about the big shop equipment, but as they say... beggers can't be choosey? Too bad about the guy dying 2 years before retirement, usually its 6 months after:D

A few shots of the new stuff...

Still need to get solvent for the parts washer, and pipe the vac in for the sandblaster.

One of the freebies....this little guy was missing it's gas tank (found it in a pile somewhere), and had no spark plug. Seller told me to just take it. I pulled the carb apart, gave it a cleaning, mounted the gas tank....3 pulls and it fired right up!

Got a nice project done in the shop over the weekend...timing belt/water pump on my brother-in-laws Impreza. Job went well, done in 3 hours...took our time.

My air ratchet was seized up...haven't used it in years. Guess I have a good excuse to buy a new one [emoji38]
