Another fairly rare, unbranded SK 4070 I snagged this weekend.

Very nice. I had one of those as well. It lives with another member now, but I saved a pic.

I have wondered about the back one with the different handle and rivet pattern on the head.

Yes, nice group shot R. I have the unmarked middle one as well. It might be missing it's lever iirc. Of those I've run into over the years, it seems a bit common for the lever to be missing.

Still have to find that top variation you have with the thick handle. That one's less common but have seen a few.

When were those unmarked SK's produced? Chrome Alloy was a popular composition and marking across the industry in 1940-1941, and I am not familiar with any other production era for that composition and marking.

According to AA (for what that's worth) the S-K marked Chrome Alloy was sold as Brazil tools. They do have a Brazil flyer. Here are my examples marked Chrome Alloy.

Without looking up the reference, isn't he only talking about Chrome Alloy Sockets? Or, not specific?

I believe that he was just referring to sockets but why else would other obviously S-K tools be simply marked Chrome Alloy?
-Don
Edit - After rechecking he apparently has a prewar catalog with a full line of tools and shows an early set with a sliding Tee and extensions. I would like to see that catalog. Below is a 3/8" socket marked Chrome Alloy that greatly resembles it's S-K counterparts.

So would I. Early S-K cats are hard to come by. Between them and Wright, not sure which is more scarce!.

If unmarked tools were sold as “Brazil,” what were the tools marked “Brazil” sold as?

I believe they are marked chrome alloy from understanding. But tiger tools are mixed in there as well. I have an sk chrome socket set that came in a tiger tools case. Not sure if it was orginal but the sockets fit perfect.

Here is a bit of an unusual ratchet that I found at a garage sale in Nevada yesterday. It is a 3/8" drive Wilde ratchet. Has anybody else run across one of these?

Looks Bogish to me.....I don't believe Wilde made any ratchets. From what I've been able to tell, they sourced their ratchets from Bog and/or Truth.

I think that it's just a clean spot but not a marking. 3baygarage posted the same model ratchet on the Garage Journal last year and here is the patent photo.

RagI have the two variations of that, different handle shapes. Also, the all metal speed wrench of theirs in the typical Snap On (crank) style.

Believe me, I try to buy everything for less than astronomical prices. The strange thing about those, like Craftsman and Snap On versions, I have never seen them at ANY sale I've been to. Same goes for flex head speeders as I mentioned before. I'm talking 15 years here. One of these days I will find one of the above somewhere for 50 cents! I feel it coming soon.

D42 nice pick up. Those are difficult to find. There is a 1/2" out there too.

I'm not the only one. I live in Ohio, where they were originally made and I've never seen anything made by Herbrand in the wild. I own one piece, a 1/2 ratchet adapter I got cheap off ebay. I've seen examples of just about every other tool co from this state, just no Herbrand. *shrug*

Have the same issue here with OTC. Live not too far from owatonna and still nothing here. These tool makers must not like to sell in their own backyards.

I see Herbrand fairly often; I got some sort of Herbrand thing the other day in with other stuff, can't remember what, maybe a breaker bar? See their battery pliers quite often, and occasionally wrenches, but mostly more specialty tools than wrenches and sockets. I tossed out some Herbrand last spring when it didn't sell on ebay.

I wish there were a good way to unite you guys that collect with these odd things. I went back to an estate sale the other day to buy some overpriced things at a discount; I was there in the last hour and the old name tools were mostly still sitting there, they were starting to box them to dumpster them. I know there was a set of P&C wrenches, because I sorted out the Plomb that I had passed on the first time and left the P&C. There were a fair amount of Indestro, just odd bits and pieces. The SK and Craftsman were all gone. Oddly enough, so were the newer chinese tools.

A decent weekend for ratchets. I had several follow me home.
1/2" drive:
SK Frankenstein (my first)
Williams S-51
3/8" drive:
American Forge QR
SpeedMaster (looks Wright made)
SK Wayne
Williams 9-50B female drive ratchet
1/4" drive:
Action
SnapOn (wartime) used to be 9/32" drive. The drive plug has been ground down to make it 1/4" and USAAF is engraved in electric pencil. Pretty cool.

I was just guessing at Wright because it doesn't look like any Penens ratchet that I've seen.
Here's a better pic. I can open it up if you're interested in seeing the guts.
