Please tell me who made these. I know they were discussed somewhere, maybe this thread, but I don’t remember who made them. Thanks.

Jim C.

Those are mine Jim, commonly referred to as Blackhawk "Baldies" due to the resemblance to a bald head.

First off YOU ****. That is a long pattern BE ratchet and they are very hard to come by. Being 1/4 drive it is even more difficult. They came with a drive plug that is inserted into the female end of the ratchet. I am super jealous. Let me know if you want to part with it.[emoji2]

Thanks Todd. I knew I saw them somewhere on the GJ and thought maybe it was in this thread. I forgot who made them and knew someone here would ID them. Thanks again.

Can anyone tell me where i can find a replacement retaining ring for my old craftsman ratchet. Hate to see this old girl incomplete.

The last time I went to Sears I was told they do not deal with repareing ratchets anymore. And ACE Hardware doesn't do it. So the only place to get a kit to repair it is ebay. And you have to PAY for something that has been free for decades!

I know guys are always trying to track down kits for busted ratchets or ratchets missing a part, etc, but I've always thought the best source for ratchet repair is another ratchet you pick up for cheap at a flea market and cannibalize. Easier said than done with rare ratchets, but that =V= era Crafty is fairly common.

Jfries, check with your local Sears. Don't let them trade it out unless you like what they're offering you. With a bit of conversation they may give you the kit and let you rebuild t yourself. I used to know the lady that did the rebuilds at our local store. She would keep some of the take off parts for me, springs, ball bearings, clips, etc.
I second Private Lugnutz on the flea market finds. You can generally pick them up cheap.

I nicknamed those retaining clips " un- obtainium". I've spent hours scouring the Internet looking for a source. The guys at Fastenal thought I was a nut..
Try the Sears thing and see if you can work out an arrangement. If that doesn't work, contact me. I should be able to dig one up for you.

Added a couple of ratchets to the hoard this weekend. Easco made 3/8" drive RHFT ratchet branded K-D, SK made 1/4" drive branded Gambles, and a Proto 1/2" drive #1016-1 torque wrench.

Not a ratchet, per se, but I picked up a WWII-era 1/2-inch drive APCO-Mossberg 0-175 ft lbs torque wrench yesterday, and attached to the end was a nifty ratcheting adaptor. It's a pretty simple mechanism. The socket has a 1/2-inch drive female drive opening on one end. On the other end is the ratcheting adaptor. When that male drive plug with the 17-tooth sprocket forged just beneath it is pressed inside the socket, it engages with teeth inside the socket, and force is applied to the fastener. When it's released, it pops up and spins freely until you push it in again and get a new bite. Pretty cool.

The mossburg is in good shape for it's age. Does it have a step down plug in it?

I “collected” this Craftsman 3/8dr rat today. It was freewheeling, but from the lack of rust and wear, I thought it might just be caked up grease. Took it apart, and it looks like the ball bearing that rides against the pawl has worn flat on more than one side. I guess that happens?
I kept the spring and ball bearing out to source, and reassembled the rest so I don’t lose anything.

What a wealth of information. An SK in a diamond Made USA push button 3/8 ratchet followed me home today. I'll try to post a picture. Searches here turned up no info. Ebay listing of a similar calls it a Frankenstein ratchet. There appears to be AU under the snap ring

I picked one up yesterday. They are hard to find for me. I only own 2. They are from the superkrome generation and yes the nickname Frankenstein.

Here’s another Mossberg.

Apco Mossberg no. 911 open gear.

1/2” drive. 10 tooth count

The gear and drive stud aren’t one forged piece. The drive stud runs through the gear, and turns independently a little bit. It’s not too pretty but here it is.

It says 5449PBL on the gear cover.
Yes....the bl presumably stands for black......I was on the phone with a Proto rep and he did not know what the P stood for and didn't have anybinfonon the ratchet because I am looking for a rebuild kit.....the only ones they seem to have are for the 80+ Plomb ratchets and roundheads.....I would like a part number ir I guess just buy a used ratchet....it seems like a nice fine tooth ratchet....but I dont know....maybe there is a reason they do not make it anymore

Best bet is to buy another on eBay. They usually go for a fair price. I think I picked mine up for $20 shipped to my door.

Nice find, especially in NZ!
Looks familiar. :)

Indeed it does!
Unusual for NZ an possibly for that very reason I now own it. Kind of rough and ready compared to most any other 1/2"ratchet I own, but kind of quaint and quirky!
Rather stumpy as well and made me think that perhaps back in the day 1/2"socket sets were the 3/8"sets of today?
