Pumpkin carving time.

I bought a Milwaukee port-a-band with a SWAG table for a project back in the summer. Broke a couple blades and had them laying on the floor deciding what to do with them.

After inspection, the blades had quite a few stress cracks dispersed around the blade so the fact that it finally broke is now not so surprising.

Anyway, fabbed up a quick handle out of a piece of plastic, punched a couple holes in the saw blade for a couple rivets and wrapped the handle. I tapered the top of the blade down with the bench grinder and kind of sharpened the point/leading edge so it would be easier to insert into the pumpkin.

Kids thought they worked great.

383 and wordman: those are really wonderful pieces of art! I may steal that idea to make a lamp out of an old honda 70 engine. Been threatening the GF to make an art object out of the engine from my old sixties Bultaco but she wants me to restore the whole bike...smart girl.

There really wasn't a radio there when I bought it, and the area around the radio face was beat up looking. I used a Zenith table top to replace the original radio face, cutting out the beat up area to make it fit. I then built a small shelf to sit a couple speakers on, and used the bookshelf stereo to power them.

This is the Zenith table top. I removed it from its case and trimmed the bottom of the face to fit.

This is the bookshelf stereo I used to power the thing. It can be as far from the upright unit as you want to run the wires.

The iPod (or computer, or whatever) just hooks up through the aux input.

Cut a round piece of glass to set in the counterbore/step on that gear and it would make an awesome end table.

TThis is the Zenith table top. I removed it from its case and trimmed the bottom of the face to fit.

I just bought one of those table radios about a month so ago, it still works well. It's unusual to find a tube radio that old that has an FM band.

This thread is just great.
When I see a really good piece of metal, or wood, or plastic, etc. out by someone's curb, etc. I usually grab it and take it home. And if I see a junky piece of metal, or wood, or plastic, etc. I definitely take that home.
Growing up my mom would tell us, "Waste not, want not." She lived on a farm in the northernmost region of a mid-west state for several years in the 1930s.
Repurposing is one of the great joys of my life.
So it is sort of my mom's fault. ..... Does that make sense?

Last weekend I swapped the forearms on a couple of my shotguns......I replaced the wood stock and forearm on my 28" barreled 12ga Remington 870 and put the black synthetic ones on....then I put a shortened "police" forearm on my 18.5" barreled 12ga H&R Pardner Pump so I could also add a sidesaddle shell holder.....

If you've ever replaced a forearm you know there is a round (castellated?) nut that holds the forearm tube/slide assembly together......depending how tight it is installed, it sometimes needs a special tool to remove....

In the past I've gotten lucky and just used a pair of blunt nose pliers in the two slots.....


But now, I looked on line and found the correct tool priced anywhere from $9.99 to $30+.......but, me being a cheap bast.....er, I mean.....frugal person I decided that I'd re-purpose a AmPro 15/16" socket


I placed the nut on the socket to mark out where the notches were....


Then I set the depth of cut and marked all around the socket....

I started cutting the notches to the line first....then around the outside....I used a cut-off wheel on a Dremel tool....


One side down....


Then the other side....


To my surprise it fit the first time! (with just a slight trim )


Worked like a boss....


A little bit of finish filing, I saved (at least) $10 bucks

Very nice work. I think this kind of modification is common. Lots of collets out there with thin collet wrenches that bend easy.

If that slewing gear is unused I'd find out what it fits and sell it.

1) Bolt a piece of round cut sheetmetal to the gear. That will be your weighted floor base for a adjustable floor lamp in the garage or shop..

2) Base floor plate for a shop stool.

I bought a Magpul stock and forend to put on my 870. It came with a polymer forend wrench.

I used 1/8” 309L stainless rods at 96 amps to weld the CRS flatbar to the cast iron.

I was getting there as that's repurposed also.

I basically took an old flat steel entry door for the base and put 5 1/2" sides on it to give it some depth, then painted a checkered flag on it.

Then placed various car things in it...

And then covered it with an old storm door ($40) as it was cheaper than ordering tempered safety glass ($180).

Pretty happy with the way it turned out!

The stools are also repurposed from an idea I had awhile ago, was just waiting to find the right stools.
Once I did I took some of my old jeans and a pair of my daughters $100 Buckle jeans and hand sewn them over the original covers.
