At least you wont have to R&R those docks anymore, one less thing on your plate.

I mean, it would have been easier to put the dock in than it is going to be to clean all the trees up, and unfortunately there is still enough dock to use. At least the damaged parts was the hardest to deal with. In theory, there won't be any more trees to fall down on the dock during storage, so that is a good thing.

Today I have been cleaning up the office, the Blu Ray discs and my miscellaneous computer and hard drive stuff has spilled out everywhere. I am trying to get things ready for a meeting with the insurance agents on Friday, got to make it look presentable. Also going to attempt to get some of the file boxes sorted and put away in the filing cabinets. So far I have made a decent dent and I have really only been at it for two hours. I was here last night until almost 10 PM, I hope to be gone before that tonight, but I also would like to get as much down as possible because tomorrow I have another meeting at a tower site in the afternoon and I kind of need to get over there and clean up a few stray trees and bushes so the site doesn't look quite as crappy.

Just got home from another long day, believe it or not tonight is an early night, yesterday I didn’t get home until 1:30 AM, guess technically that was still today. :(

I had a fairly successful day and a seven hour road trip to pick up some stuff. Got a couple hard drives, another DVD duplicator for parts, and a freshly built computer with almost all NOS parts setup for Windows XP. The hard drives were what I was really after, I had no good way to test them, but I went round and round with the seller enough that I am hopeful that there aren’t going to be any issues. I am so tired that I will wait until tomorrow to find out, won’t even lose any sleep over it. ;)

One that still isn't set up.

Synology, not sure of the model, I am a bit new to this aspect. Dropbox has been my main backup and will still handle the business files as it is very good at syncing my data across multiple devices. Not sure how the NAS will perform in that regard, eventually I would like to have my own complete setup and not pay Dropbox.

The new drives do work, just having trouble installing the software, once I reboot it should work fine, then I can decide if I am going to reconfigure them. The good news is that they transfer data faster than I expected, guessing it is due to the RAID design. The older Thunderbolt 2 unit was transferring at an average read/write of 800 MB per second (about 20 minutes per TB) and the newer Thunderbolt 3 unit was writing at 1500 and reading at about 1200 (about 10 to 15 minutes per TB). Plenty fast enough for backups of what I am doing. I do have faster drives, but they are not expandable and they do not use RAID, so there is no data safeguards at all.

That took way longer than expected, had to reboot several times and override Apple's Nanny State security features. I can now see all the info on the drive and configure as needed. For now I am just leaving them as RAID 5, appears that all the drives are 4 TB and on unit has eight of them, the other has six of them. Basically it reserves one drive's worth of space to allow a failure and not actually lose data, so I have 20 TB on one and 28TB on the other available to use. Next step is to clean them, they are beyond dirty, but my nitrogen tank setup is over at the Salvage Garage, going to have to wait to pick that up, I know the compressor at the Hill is not dry enough for me to want to chance blowing things out and I would use a case of the "Duster" cans. So far I am super happy, I thought the transfer rates would be closer to 500MB per second, so the slower of the units is almost double that. They should be fast enough to write directly to them, taking one step out of my equation. Next is the NAS, need to get that configured, but I have too many things to do today and I have already been in the office too long...

Worst part of this is that I bought all my parts based on this unit, nothing even close price wise, basically double what I paid for this one. I can get a brand new case for $325 shipped to my door, but then I would still have to outfit it. I guess this one could be used for parts, that is if the seller will give a decent partial refund. Not even sure how this is going to play out. I hate it when **** like this happens. :(

Seller is clueless, I am going to suggest they refund the purchase price and keep the shipping charge, I keep the damaged unit and salvage what I can. Otherwise they roll the dice with the included insurance (but I think packing will be a reason for denial) or do a return, but the shipping would be two ways and I am sure that is not cheap. At this point I don’t really want to spend much effort on it, wasn’t in my plans to buy a damaged unit.

Today I am at the Hill, going to start working on the 3500, plus the military forklift, plus Perk, plus…..

That really ***** about the damaged duplicator!

I think you'll be very happy with the Synology though. I've had a bunch of different brand NASes over the years, but Synology is the best, by far, in my experience.

We bought a bunch of them at work a few years ago (like, half a dozen of the big 36 drive rack mount ones, petabyes of storage). They do dual power supplies, dual 10Gbps fibre optic NICs, and software capabilities that puts the big "enterprise" storage vendors to shame, for a fraction of the price.

I don't get paid to promote them or anything, I'm just a big fan of good tech.

Synology has a package you can install called Cloud Sync that will do bidirectional sync with Dropbox (and a bunch of other cloud storage vendors), they work really nicely together. They also have a Dropbox like package (Synology Drive, maybe?). It looks pretty good, but I haven't played with it much. Dropbox is pretty hard to beat in that area.

Dropbox has been the best service I have found for sure, I just don’t like the price, I needed more storage and they dumped me into the business version, priced reasonably per user, except that the three user minimum. If I could do two users, I wouldn’t even think about it, but it is almost $1000 a year for three users. I think it is the safest bet for being able to control the data and share it. I can also keep Dad from modifying or deleting data by accident or on purpose.

I am going to try and do a “quick” cleanup at the Hill, Dad will be home tomorrow night and I figure if it looks a little better, it would be better for everyone. So far I have confirmed help tomorrow for about eight hours, I have made a plan that will try to fit 24 hours worth of work into that eight hours. ;)

I think if I had three people for the next year, I might make a decent dent in things, maybe not. :(

I have actually toyed with the idea of just hiring someone and running full steam ahead, but right now isn't the best time to do it. If I could find someone to work a couple days a week, I could make that happen. Really I just need to clone myself, of course that could be dangerous, because each clone could start acquiring things, then we would have a real problem...

On the other hand. . . It's much easier to keep one helper organized than two. If you only get a helper as needed, you don't need to fire anyone, or work to keep him busy. Also, Inevitably you probably have a clear focus of what you want him to do. Hire as needed is not a bad approach.

The struggle is finding someone, they can't be a complete dub, they need to have a bit of common sense and they can't be a primadonna either. I have had some good help, but I tend to find people that are destined for better things, they use me as a stepping stone. If I could find the right person, I could justify full time employment for them, tall order in this day and age, or I would have to pay them more than I get paid and I really can't afford that. As it sits right now, I would be paying a decent person half what I make an hour running all the companies for my Dad, even that is hard to swallow, but the anticipated return would offset the costs. Problem is, like I said before, timing. As it stands right now I would not be making any money at all, next year should be a bit better, just need to push through.

It looks like all my Aliexpress orders have cleared Chinese customs and have left the "origin" country, so there is hope they will get here sooner. Not that I need them right now since the big unit arrived damaged.

My neighbor helped me get the hoods off both maroon trucks, so at least I am ready to start pulling parts off to make my way to the exhaust manifolds. Should be lots of fun, most of that will be tomorrow, right now I am still cleaning things up around the yard, it looks ten times worse than before. Gotta make a mess to clean up, right?

1st gear going forward spun out too quickly, 2nd gear going forward lost power, 1st gear in reverse made it up the hill. So it isn’t going to carry anything up or down the hill, but it can make it down and back for loaded or shuffling purposes.

It does go up and down the actual driveway, I think it was in second gear coming up that part of the Hill, but that was last fall, so I don’t really remember.

Now I am going to chip up some tree branches to clear up some more space, also have to crush some 55 gallon drums so they can go to the dump.

There are some deer chewing on the branches I just piled up, they aren’t going to like me in a minute.

Got the trees at the top of the Hill taken care of, chipper is ready for tomorrow afternoon at the bottom of the Hill. I am making room to get the 3500 inside. Just emptied some “waste oil” from my neighbor, except now it smells like gasoline in here, he put old gas in the oil and didn’t say anything. I told him not to do that again, probably be fine, but there are enough nasty smells I deal with, stale gas is one I don’t usually have to smell in the shop. :(

I crushed the 55 gallon drums, loaded up the dump trailer about halfway, going to take it home tonight and let my GF put the rest of the yard debris in there. I wanted to go home semi early, but that clearly isn’t going to happen since it is already 9PM.

Apparently I didn’t restock my supply of 6.5 diesel parts when I did all the work to the Blurb. I have to wait on parts now, so no hope of getting the truck back together today. Probably end up being next weekend before it is completely back together. I have some knockoff injectors and glow plugs, but I do not want to go through all this effort twice if I have a problem with them. I need to replace the transmission cooler lines as well and I do not have those, Monday I will order everything I don’t have on hand. I might try and do a bit of cleaning to the frame and replace a few parts that are a lot easier to get to right now versus later.

The last few days is catching up with me, I am slowing to a crawl. I have moved vehicles around so that they aren’t front and center, I need to spend an hour chipping tree branches at the bottom of the Hill. Once Dad thinks I “need” the chipper, he will loan it out to the nearest person so I can’t use it. If I get all the branches and chunks that are in the way on the ground, I can deal with the broken standing stuff later. I would love to move the school bus, but the transmission is weird and it doesn’t like to shift from forward to reverse. The amount of times I would have to do that is pretty considerable, every time is a greater chance that it won’t go into gear at all. I need to dissect that and the Boston fire truck in the next few weeks. I am not starting another project until the 3500 is back together, plenty of projects that are partway done already.

I am pretty sure I was the first one to tear into that since it was built in 2000. I think the manifolds are salvageable, the turbo one looks like it is better than the other side, the cast iron got a bit torched near where the crossover pipe bolts up. Still be better than some that I have seen. I generally save them, but always try to use the best ones I can, of course I have a couple new sets, but those are dedicated to a "better" project.

Setup the seven bay ripping machine, I am trying it on my least powerful computer and it works fine, this computer probably couldn’t handle any more than the seven drives, but my other one will. I am stoked, also one of my Aliexpress orders is stateside already, hopefully they will get here soon, would be awesome to be able to set another ripping unit up.

Good progress. Sorry you are faced with "Dreaded Desk Work." (What my secretary used to call it.) Today looks like the last nice day until Friday, so at least you'll have some DDW days coming up that will make it easier to be inside.

I was looking at the forecast, so I might try and sneak in a bit more outside work today. I would like to get another load ready for both the dump and scrap yard. I am trying to order all my parts for the 3500 right now, also need to get transmission cooler lines for both that and the ramp truck.

I can definitely say that my workflow with the movies is not very good, got myself confused a bit and I think I deleted some files that weren't yet backed up. I think all that will change as I now have enough storage space to handle things in more or less one spot, before that I had several drives spread across multiple locations. I will get things figured out over the next couple days. Also need to start scanning my discs so I can update what I own and in what formats the films are in. I feel that some of this organization will translate into my stockroom setups. Would be nice to have a digital data set that can be searched, that seems easier than opening a hundred drawers looking for something.
