The Listas where a great score. They should definitely help you organized the shop so in functions better. You got a of area to store stuff and seems like maybe need a better starting point? Anyway you can put listas in a temporary set up so that's not taking up your floor space. Then you can get shop in a functioning state to deal with the other areas? Then you can get office done and start working of other areas after both those are done?

I think the first step is to get all the stainless tops removed, then the doors and shelves, that way they can go outside to be pressure washed. At that point I would decide where they are going for now. It looks like I can use maybe three or four in the shop, then one in the office trailer, maybe even two. After that I think the rest need to be sold off. The tower project I have been working on has me all stressed out, so all these overwhelming feelings have been amplified for sure.

Since I occasionally coin a new phrase, the new one for you today is "preservation paralysis". What works for me is to totally stop, then resume activity by throwing away anything Where I am standing that is truly trash.

When I get to tossing all the empty containers and worn out saw blades and such, I look for bigger "trash". I often have to be brutally honest with myself. Today I tossed two ac duct adaptors that were brand new. Doesn't matter, as I have finished all the ac work here I will need them for.

After a bit of this, your brain will settle down into some sort of toss it mode, and things get better. At least you will be accomplishing something productive.

I don't have any red carpet to roll out and I promise I won't pick everything up to make it look pretty. I am warning you, you will need a truck to bring back things.

I do that, actually did it the other day, now my preservation paralysis is really bad.

What I want to do is just get a small area so it functions the way it should. I almost think I am confusing myself in a way as I have too many things going on. In typically hoarder fashion, I see something else and get distracted, ooh a piece of candy! Then I don't even remember what I was supposed to be doing.

Help Wanted:

Looking for people willing to help hopeless hoarder with lots of cool things, must being willing to work for storage supplies or other type of interesting items, food will also be provided. Must be able to listen to whining, excuses, justifications and rationalizations, but not believe any of them. Should have truck, trailer, or both and be willing to leave with things and not consider helpee an enabler. Also should wear boots, as there will be plenty of BS.

Who knows RC, you may end up with a delivery driver. :D

I am fighting batteries and chargers and general electrical problems now. I had a decent used battery that I put in the suburban, but apparently it was either on its last legs or the suburban decided to kill it. I for some reason have no 12 volt float chargers, but I do have two 24 volt ones??? I also have no adapters for the side post to attach the charging cables, so I had to use some 3/8" bolts. I guess I will place an amazon order tonight.

Remember "Now the hard part begins"? Second time around is much harder, with smaller results.

Parts to dead cars go in the dead car.

If things leaving the shop have value, find something in the storage units that doesn't and swap. I had to get rid of two engines and a transmission to make room for van parts. Haven't missed them at all.

Comparing yourself to Bill doesn't hold water, he has never sold anything to gain cash, he doesn't understand the concept of selling something you don't need in order to buy something you do.

The shop looks better everyday, you must be doing something right.

I can't help you with the decision to enlarge your office 4x. That is a personal decision that I cannot understand, I would never give up shop space for office space.

Wish I had the bank to jump on a plane and come hang out for a week. You and I could get your office built in a week and get that place in order too. It's real easy for me, it's not my stuff so I just see it as stuff that needs organizing. You have emotional ties to it. Same with me and my junk, I can't focus enough to organize my little shop but I bet if you walked in, you could immediately see how my place could be more organized because in all reality, it is just stuff... It overwhelms me though.

Example. My storage got flooded last year when the house and shop got flooded. The main things in there are my 15yo washer and dryer set, a refrigerator I had in my old shop that was molded prior to the flood, it's biohazard now. There is a 15yo pleather loveseat that was a mouse condominium prior to the flood and now is another biohazard. There are several sets of drawers from tanker style desks that I kept to build a work bench but never did, those are good and rusty. There is an old desk that originally had an addressograph machine on it and the two banks of drawers have like 10 or so card file size drawers each. It's pretty cool but it's completely covered in surface rust and so not worth much to anyone but me because I can envision what it would look like with 1,000 hours labor and paint... Everything in there is basically flooded junk and needs to be thrown away or scrapped but I keep thinking those drawers would be cool for a future shop and that desk would look so good restored and omfg there is so much biohazard in there I don't even want to deal with any of it...

On top of that, I didn't even have a lock on the unit since the flood, sometimes I leave the door open to air out. Last weekend at 3am the manager calls me and tells me that someone broke into my unit and he held them at gunpoint until the leo showed up. I had to go identify my stuff... I get there and I **** you not, the f'n thieves dumped out two of my totes and stole just my totes to use to steal other people's stuff. My stuff was not even worth stealing. To add insult to injury, the thief's vehicle was full of stuff that wasn't mine and when checked the other units, the only other unit that got broken into was my scrap buddy. He came up there and had to identify his stuff, he pulled out a diesel pump, some stainless cabinet doors and some copper wire and told the police that they thief could have the rest of the stuff, it would save my scrap buddy a trip to the dumpster. The thieves stole scrap from him and only took my totes....

I need to clean out that storage and just scrap the desk and drawers... I need a foot in my ***...

I think I get this one. The office is where ebay / craigslist sales go to get prepped, described, and sorted. Part of the cash flow, and thus, part of how the shop works.

My uncle's shop office is awful. He explained that it doesn't make him money, so he's not going to make it better. It's basically enough area to contain a fax machine and an office chair.

Nine, your so right. Emotional ties to our stuff really limits us. Someone might see a 6in Chinese vise on one of my benches. Its has no real value but to me that vise has a story of where, how I got it, memories made with good friend of mine.

Hey Strouty maybe we can get some of the hi tech guys on the GJ to build the transporter. I'll come and help then.

I try not to take the stuff I wont use... but its hard, cause well its free now but someday I might have to buy it when i need it...

I think this is much more than the second time around, but I see your point, things get exponentially harder to get rid of after you have all ready sorted and purged.

Parts to dead cars go in the dead car.

The problem is that the car is not really dead yet, will still drive until it is dead or I fix it. Reverse is very weak, but on flat ground it is not too bad. I think the worst part is the A/C not working.

If things leaving the shop have value, find something in the storage units that doesn't and swap. I had to get rid of two engines and a transmission to make room for van parts. Haven't missed them at all.

This is kind of what I did last night before I left. I dug out several bins that have things that can go, I even brought the dumpster to the storage boxes for easy access.

Comparing yourself to Bill doesn't hold water, he has never sold anything to gain cash, he doesn't understand the concept of selling something you don't need in order to buy something you do.

We have similarities, he places value on things that I wouldn't value, but I am positive I could find things that have no value to most people that would be really hard to get me to let go of. The hard part is I see the same ideas, I have this dream of how my shop will be and he has a dream about how things will be in his. We both probably spend more time thinking about things than doing and that is the biggest issue, at least for me.

The shop looks better everyday, you must be doing something right.

Thanks

The office would be in the dead space above the new stockroom, so it would not waste any space it would gain me lots of space. My current office would become the kitchen/lunchroom and I would open up the area above it to allow for pallet storage, it looks great in my mind. :headscrat

I feel that, I think you look at the stuff and remember it the way it was, it is stuck in some sort of time loop and then you have the vision of what it could look like, a lot of people can't see that at all. I know my GF is really not good at visualizing things, but she is getting better.

This is my exact thought, I was looking at things and trying to figure out what actually should be in my shop, when I started assessing what makes me money, well the shop itself was not even in the top ten of this list. I figure I should concentrate on what makes the money and streamline it so money can be made without so much effort. If the shop was the money maker, then I would think the other way for sure.

I use the office for all my tower related consulting too, so right now that is almost all my income and I have to trip over stuff to get things done. This is not a good situation, so I want to make it better long term. I know it won't happen overnight, but I need to start moving in that direction for sure.

This is definitely a huge problem for me, I have tons of things that are very useful, but I am storing them and not using them. At some point I need to say enough is enough and start unloading them or actually using them.

being able to find it when you need it is another story.

Usually when I can't find something the "thing" ends up costing me even more, because I waste time looking, still have to buy a new item because I can't find it, and in the end I am still storing the original one somewhere. The mental, physical and financial strain really isn't worth it. I just keep saying, once I have things organized.................

Your right... its not always emotional. I've have many items I acquired for free or little money. Sometimes I just pass stuff onto others that could use it.

I do enjoy passing things on, I hate to see good stuff go to waste.
