The 486 is actually fine, if, well, when the motherboard dies, I can replace it with a new one with a solid state drive, the latest version of the software for about $1100. The company that took over supporting this from Bridgeport is still supporting essentially every part. There is really no need to upgrade at this point, but someday I want to buy a 3 axis CNC setup, then I will keep this mill as my manual use machine with the bonus of being able to do fancy things.

I would have to upgrade... No floppy drives in any of my computers since about 2005. Heck, only my 2011 MacBook Pro has a DVD drive. None of our other laptops have DVD drives anymore. I've sold off or donated all the old PCs off to new homes. Thought about picking up a Mac Mini for the basement TV since my DIY USB DAC is down there, but haven't really felt the need yet.

I can’t justify the upgrade until something breaks, it just doesn’t make financial sense to me.

I am off to visit the auction, there were a couple things I was interested in, but not sure I have the ambition to get them.

Going to bring Bev to get an inspection sticker today too, spent part of this morning getting the registration taken care of.

Also talked again with the owner of the house behind my shop, looks like we will be making a deal for me to buy it. This could be the best thing to happen in a while. More details and pictures of that next week once we have our agreement in place.

I am pretty good at estimating what my overall sales will be, looks like after commissions I will end up with about $500 and that was what I expected. Of course I spent a little money and may even spend some more, just depends on what is there after I drop off Bev, hopefully everything will be gone!

I forgot about a couple things at the auction, the big tires and a storage container that went separately. So I definitely made more than $500.

I also spent a bit, but all “good stuff”.

Mostly casters and a bunch of heavy duty hoisting/pulling grips.

A few of them are about five feet long.

Today I found out the kid that I am training is terrible with tools, he doesn’t put them away and can lose anything. He used my tools to install a license plate on the trailer and those tools are now MIA, really ticks me off because they were all snap on and probably about $200 to replace them. I have looked all over and I can’t find them, so he either has them in his car or they were left on the trailer and now probably have a new home.

You and Craig need to start the East Coast Caster Company.

Sounds like you need a trainee box of HF tools along with the rule: you lose it, you replace it.

He has his own tools, but he doesn’t bring them. I also had him ”snap” the rigging rope off the tower. I told him just the rope, no pulley or anything else, when the rope comes down, it slams into the ground with a horrendous thud, he left the large hook on it. I told him he could have killed someone and needed to pay attention to what is said. I think I have my work cut out for me.

As for the casters, well...........

Almost all are heavy duty high end faultless or Albion, even the light duty are still pretty heavy duty.

You know I was there for a short time, and looking for a guy with a crazy scar or bandage over his eye.

Did you see either what that Unimog or airport fire truck went for? Not much of a crowd there today.

Unimog did just under $12k and the fire truck did $4100. You should have let me know, I would have met up with you. I was in and out, the auction dragged on until almost 4:30.

My gas caddy -

Some of the worst of the grips, I am going to soak them in evaporust, bet they will look like new.

I would say at least a quarter of them will be back at the auction in the spring, some will be sold, but I do like to have a decent supply of casters on hand. They get used a lot and I use a lot of them. They are only in the shop so I can sort them.

Sunday is the day to go and pick up the M37 and the new vertical bandsaw, looks like the weather will be hot again. The guy says he has a bunch more tools for sale, so I am bringing some extra cash just in case.

Bus trip went south, kind of tired of the whole ordeal, I wish I had never gotten involved. :(

Went through a couple bins of the casters, some good, bad, and ugly ones.

I like that gas caddy. I've looked at them at a few auctions but usually were bid up higher than I wanted to pay. But I keep thinking it would be nice to fill one of those once and likely would last me the whole summer for all yard machines that need gas. Rather than filling the 5 gal gas can multiple times.

I am going to get all the casters organized today, I may be able to send the remnants to another auction in November, I may clean up a bit more of my junk too, almost like a second chance.

That is one of those purchases that I will never regret, I love good quality casters. I buy the roll around wooden bases from tractor supply and replace the casters with good ones, they end up being much nicer to use. I think I need to make up a bunch that are made from aluminum, some of the wood ones are warping with the weight I have in them, they roll nice though!

I find I have to rebuild the TS rolly things... I fill the main gap with plywood and sufficiently glue screw it. I also replace the casters but pay retail. I also add screw in eyebolts to give me a connection point to drag them.

Your new nickname has changed... from Listaman to Wheels.

I am thinking about starting a new area in the shop, "caster corner".

I got almost all the casters sorted, there were way more "good" ones than I thought. Some of the most rugged ones are like new, I am going to go through them again and get more picky, then list a bunch on craigslist.

I am all set to head out early in the morning to pick up the M37 and the bandsaw. Also looking at a large drill press on the way back.

The M37 is not going In the shop yet, so there should still be space. The bandsaw and most likely the drill press should fit fine, just need to shuffle a few things around. The current big drill press will be leaving the shop, that will clear up a lot of space. The new casters will be headed out to the storage boxes once I do the final sorting.

Hopefully in the next two weeks I will be getting the F-700 crew cab out of my Dad’s Quonset hut, that will be this winter’s project. I need to get my act together, all the things going on right now are really important to me, so I need to make sure things are actually getting accomplished.

I have a master solution for you Strouty. Turn all the casters upside down and fasten them to the floor in a large spread. Then you can roll anything you want, when you want, to where you want. :bounce:

Unfortunately the casters are not all the same height. :(

I am eating lunch now, loaded up more than I bargained for, headed to look at the big drill press next.

Just unloaded, did not get the big drill, no room on the truck, will be buying it, but more for the drill bits than anything. It has a Morse taper #4 and drill bits up to 2”. It runs off a big flat belt, but I think it could be updated to run off a variable speed reeves drive.

fd5009e3463594065e52fc97571f1f9f.jpg

I also picked up some machines stock, an angle plate and some nice work holding parts for the mill, a bearing heater, and another snow plow.

The bandsaw has an adjustable speed control via the foot pedal. Looks like it will cut about anything I would ever want from 50 FPM to 4500 FPM.

Ok... when I die... I want to come back as a member of your staff... so I can use your shop. That drill press looks awesome. The band saw is a band saw... big but meh... its a band saw.

Back to the drill press. What year is that from?

Saw the plow on your truck...

Need pictures of the drill bits when they arrive.

Probably have the drill press next week, the picture is deceiving, it is about 9' tall and takes up about 6 feet by 4 feet of floor space. It has some markings on the castings, it was made in Massachusetts, I remember that much. I am still holding my breath for this really nice radial arm drill, but I have not heard anything back yet about it.

The size matches my expectations... I have a radial floor drill... small... but functional... craftsman. It has a cheap X-Y table... I keep the speed low... I consider it my metal drill press. I have another setup for wood. They are both 5/8" chucks.

I want the green truck... for grocery shopping.

Man you like your big drill presses, that's a monster.

Now i need to go look up what a radial arm drill does...

Great scores as always.

GB

edit: **** now I want a radial arm drill, can't believe I'd never heard of them before, such a sensible idea.
