Ahh, the dreaded time change.

I used to love daylight saving before I had kids.

Right now I'm battling with a 3 and a 6 year old in 30 degree (C) heat, trying to convince them that it's night time at 8:30 even though it's daylight outside.

For me Standard Time, which it just changed to... makes more sense... some clocks I have stay on standard time year round... it annoys my doctors who think I'm too stupid to change the settings on my CPAP machine or my other medical stuff... my sleep doesn't change just because some idiot says its DST...

By the way, I realise you guys are heading into winter, and my complaints may seem thoroughly lame in context.

My struggles are real!

Half expecting (and probably deserve) a "you ****"

What time does the sun rise if it is still daylight at 8:30? Today it will be dark at about 5 PM, I am not a fan of fall for this reason, the next 4 months ****. Although, this is one of the first falls that I remember having the shop ready and cleaned so it will be useful come winter time.

The sun gets up at about 05:30 here at the moment.

At winter solstice the sun isn't up till 7, and it's down at 5pm.

I'm not a huge fan of winter, but it's nothing here compared to what you get mate. It still feels long and miserable to me, lots of morning frost, but we rarely get snow.

I think the coldest it got here last winter was about -7c, but nights that cold are pretty rare.

For Up Over folks, winter brings long nights and cold weather. We put up lights for Christmas and then celebrate New Year's Eve with fireworks that start at 7:00 pm. Down Under, Christmas is beach weather and the lights don't go on until 9:00 at night (sun is down but not dark yet). New Year's Eve fireworks start at 9:00 for the kids but Midnight for the big harbor show in Sydney. Everyone takes their 4-week vacation around the holidays so Sydney traffic is real light for the Americans who think July is vacation time.

It may have changed in the 30 years since I lived there but Christmas decorations on the streets and in stores didn't show up until the beginning of December (no Thanksgiving, Black Friday or Cyber Monday). In the US, I start seeing Christmas stuff in August and full-on madness arrives November first. Bah Humbug!

Maybe the earth is a dodecahedron.

We got a load of scrap for tomorrow from the pile beside the house, looks like there will be another one as well. I didn’t get photos as we were rushing to beat the dark.

Also got the oil changed in my GFs Volvo, changed some interior parts and a door weather strip that was falling off. Then I saw her coolant was a touch low so I went to grab some, all I had was universal 50/50. It was some that was in the Lista cabinets from the dealership, I thought awesome, until I poured it out and it was freaking brake fluid. I was pissed, I tried to drain it out, but you could see it and I didn’t want it running through the radiator and ruining something. I took the coolant tank out and swapped it with the one from my scrap car. I figured better safe than sorry.

I have often wondered how folks on the east coast can deal with the time change to standard in the winter when i can barely stand it getting dark at 530pm here on the west side of the time zone. It's usually WAY dark by the time i get home from work. ALL work transitions to weekends if outdoors.

And the same problem in the summer, IF we didn't have the daylight savings time, would be sunrise at like 4AM!

Eastcoast - Standard Time :
Wake up in the dark, leave the house at dawn, work inside all day, go home in the dark.
You get used to fumbling around in the dark.

My preference would be to just keep DST year round. :dunno:

I think we should just see if the sun could stay up for 14 hours everyday, it would make things much easier. I also would like snow in the mountains only, except fluffy white stuff on Christmas. Temps should never exceed 75 except when you are at the lake or the beach.

Got another trip off to the scrap yard, made a decent dent in the pile of trash, I think things are starting to feel doable. Hopefully the snow holds off until the end of the month.

Tall people running boards, it is a really tall truck to get into. Getting ready to chain it down.

Wonder how hard it would be to find a rolled 5500 Dodge/Cummins chassis to drop that vintage Ford body on? I believe you can gut all the emissions **** and have a modern "classic" truck.

Like I said several pages ago, you sure get into some neat ****!

I think the 5500 would be a cool idea, probably come up with an F-550 frame easier. I think since the axles are so rugged, it would be best to keep the heavy chassis, plus less messing around.

Getting rid of TVs here is a pain... you have to drive 30 miles to a "special electronic" recycling center... People still put them out front but they get a RED TAG and sit for months...

I live on a dead end... several have tried to dump them here... Caught them all so far.

Almost the same here. You can't toss them in the trash but have to wait till the county has a recycling day. Occasionally someone still tries to sell a tube TV on CL. Poor misguided souls, I laugh but feel some pity for them.

If this dude will take all your old stuff away for free I say load him up fast before he changes his mind.

If you can get em into a plastic bag... AND get it to fit in a 95 gallon garbage can... youre good to go. You can always do what I did... I took a big screen like the one in the back of that truck he loaded... I took it apart... gave the parts to my nephew who used them to make a "robot" sculpture for a school project... he won.

This is actually a company that specializes in recycling electronics. First load dropped off, free of charge, second load is ready, but probably not able to drop it off until Friday. I also got rid of about 20 gallons of paint, still have probably 50 to go. One of my local municipalities takes paint for free, so I am going to take advantage of it. I am going to pay for removal of all the mattresses and sofas as I just want them gone, plus it shouldn't be too heavy and at $80 a ton, I don't expect it to cost too much.

On the shop front, I got the Volvo taken care of, Friday I should be able to get rid of the suburban carcass, still need to cut the quarter panels off it and then toss some more junk in there to get it gone!

Are you allowed to burn at your property? Id just burn the sofas and beds. Scrap the metal after cleanup.

That is frowned upon around here, I am going to burn the wood, but even that is not supposed to be burned. Burn permits are for brush only.

The mattresses should be cheap enough to get rid of, even if there is a ton of material total, it will be worth the $80 as burning them would be more of a PITA to me.

I need to get the excavator blade removed ASAP, I hope to be ready to go in a week and a half and I don't want to be delayed due to that not being done.

$80 for a burn permit??? WOW. I just throw everything in a pile and let er rip. I thought you were out in the bush? You are supposed to pull a $20 burn permit here, but it's completely unenforced. I doubt you would get in trouble unless you burned a section down by mistake.

Burn permits are free, trash is $80 per ton for things like mattresses and sofas. As for burning, I don't want any more attention than necessary as this house is one phone call away from being condemned and that is the last thing I need.

We have two beautiful days ahead and I can’t use them for the shop.
:(

I have to do some tower work, last step type stuff, so it will be nice to get the loose ends *******.

Friday is supposed to be wet again, hopefully not too wet.

They changed the forecast for Friday, now it will be dry. Today not only did we finish up the work on the tower project, but we had time to load up the suburban carcass. We are ready to go to town tomorrow, should be about where I want to be by next week.

Today was going well, but the guy that works for my Dad screwed me over pretty good, had to change plans and may have just ruined my weekend cleanup too. Go figure.

If you have a wood chipper... you have a solution to "that guy".

I'm also scheduling a massive cleanup... MUST move the winter equipment into the garage... before it's WINTER. Last year I had to get two neighbors help me pull all the stuff out of the back shed (that has no power)… it was a pain starting everything with electric start... 200 feet of extension cords... MISTAKE... at least now... the **** rolls easy in neutral.

Yup, winter will be here before we know it.

So we were supposed to use a dump trailer with y’all sides, but that guy messed things up. Shortly after that the black burb decided not to start, I think the starter kicked the bucket as the solenoid makes a forceful clunk like it is doing its job.

Instead of the dump trailer, we loaded up mattresses and sofas on my non dumping trailer. Going to bring this to the dump tomorrow, this will be the first load that I will be paying for, definitely not the last.

3b7567460189e31bf595210f353cc884.jpg

So now I will have to get the burb towed to the shop, then figure out the issue and get it fixed. It has some other issues that I need to deal with as well, so I guess it is time to deal with them. The good news is that the house is almost empty, still have to deal with the basement and some furniture the owner wants, but it is much better than it was a couple weeks ago. I will have to post some pictures tomorrow. We got rid of about 100 gallons of paint, and two full truck loads of computers and TVs/monitors. There have been two scrap trips and some donation trips as well as three or four trips to the recycling bins. The outside junk is going to get slowly picked up and put into really big bags so I can lift them into the trailer or dump truck once we are ready to get them out.

Did you try the Hammer trick on the starter ?
That always worked for me to get the van/pickup to the garage to replace the starter.

I even had someone click it while I hit it. This starter is a big gear reduction unit and there are multiple points of failure. It almost sounded like the bendix was stuck out, the solenoid was definitely working, or at least trying to work, it had a nice positive thud to it when engaged. I figure I will try hitting it one more time, but after that it is getting towed to my shop.

We put the trailer load of soft goods in the shop last night so they wouldn’t get wet, since I pay by weight I figured that would be smart.

Got home and GF tells me the furnace is not working, sure enough no fire. Turns out it is the transformer, try and find one of those at 8 PM on a Friday night. Luckily I had a spare setup at my shop and it was still good. A couple hours later and I was hungry, crank, and tired, but not cold. I decided instead of eating that I would head to bed early, now I am really hungry.

That's going to be a lot of loads on that little trailer....
Buying the house or not, your view from the shop has to be improving with the clean up!

We took two loads today and it made what felt like a huge dent, took almost all the bulky stuff. Last load of paint goes today as well, filled my dumpster with shingles and drywall, cheaper to do that than haul it to the dump. So far I have $112 in trash costs and we got $150 for the scrap, once I get into removing all the bad copper, it should help offset things substantially. We filled several of my “big” trash bags. These were used for sand and stone when we did remote sites, but these had some vermin get in with them and the very corners were chewed open, so not good for a few thousand pounds of stone, but great for a few hundred pounds of trash!

Still a ton of work to do, but I am going to keep at it, cleaning out the basement is the next project, then I can build a temporary cover so the rain will stop coming inside.

That is the only way to do this project, I kept finding more and more things, but I know if I keep at it, eventually it will be done.
