Scrap here is $2.75 per 100 pounds, (too tired and lazy to do the math). It is lower than it was after the Chinese Olympics when it dropped to $3. That drop caught me with my pants down. I bought 5 cars over the weekend For $200 each when prices were $16/100. Monday morning it dropped to $3 and I got about $80 each. Fortunately that time the prices went back up pretty quickly.

For the first time in a long while, we didn't loose power at the house. Kinda a bummer as I was ready with my new diesel generator that is sized properly instead of my small 3800w genny that I used on the job for power tools. I ended up having to "fool" with generators any way with my Mom and Aunt down on the coast being out.

Owning a whole house automatic standby generator is the best insurance you will ever have against a power outage. We have had one about 10 years and thus far it has far more hours in "weekly excercise" test mode than it has in actually combating outages. Murphy's law of generators states that if you have one, your power will not go out.

No, I believe that Murphy’s Law accurately states that within 10min after dragging out the portable generator, finding a dry spot to put it, running the extension cords, pulling out the refrigerators and freezers to access the cords, struggling to get the generator running, and plugging the cords in ............. the power will come back on. Necessitating having to undo everything you just accomplished, just to turn on a reading light.

Overseeing bulb changes on another one of our towers, have to work with the radio stations to shut down while climbers are there.

Power is back at the shop, should be able to do a bit of work this afternoon, priority is swap front tires on Bev. After that just depends on what time it is.

Back from the bulb change, slightly unmotivated. The FM station is a small unspoken on GJ type of broadcaster and they think they **** three flavored ice cream. After scheduling the shut down over a week ago and being courteous of Sunday, the guy refused to shut down, I had to threaten to turn equipment off manually. Then the he tried to tell me that I was illegally climbing the tower and putting everyone at risk since I didn’t have an EME monitor. When I told him that he was the one putting people at risk by not shutting down he then informed me he would shut off the transmitter for 15 minutes then he would turn it back on to low power and that was all we got. What an *******, luckily he doesn’t have a lease with us and his new one is going to reflect how much of a PITA his station is to me. Just to clarify, this isn’t some employee, he is the owner. He told me that Saturday mornings are “very important times” to the station, I asked him why he hadn’t told me this before, because I could have scheduled another time, then he says that all 24 hours of the day are “very important times”. Seriously?

Rant over.

Unspoken=religious? When I was a wrench, there was no quicker way to clear the dealership shop, than to see a car pull in with "God is my co-pilot " plate on the front. You couldn't find a tech for a half hour. Makes me sad to see, because I'm one. Hypocrisy, ugh.

So I have made it to page 4 of 128 on this thread. I will throw out some things.

Nice to know there is another Suburban addict. I have had many many of them. My dream is a K2500 cummins swapped. Maybe one day. Right now I am building one for work. See signature.

And the Lista's. Soo many. I just wish I had a garage.

Multiple mills - ( don't spoil it if you sold one - or bought more) I have a buddy who has his own machine shop. If you go on Just 8n's
he makes a lot of the parts they sell. He had 2 mills, 4 drill presses, and about 25 lathes. He just called me a couple of days ago, he wants me to go pick up another lathe for him. LOL.

I will read more tomorrow. Been a long day. My oldest son moved in with us and bought my ex wifes roaches with him. We got to exterminate the house and wash everything in the kitchen today. The kitchen is not set up for a 6'4" person. Back is killing me. Time for my favorite pain killer (Jamesons) and bed.

And the shop - what I have seen so far is amazing. Great work. You get a lot done for a guy with no motivation.

Only page 4? :bounce: And have you tried Jameson's Black Barrel? Since they discontinued their 12yr, it's my go to for Jameson's now.

And Strouty, I would have just shut him down manually. A few years ago we had a project on a riverboat casino. We were given a 4 hour window to remove two big a$$ cylinders, move them and install two more cylinders on the pedestrian walk way when they add a new hotel and walkway to the entrance to the casino. The captain was super cool, but the state only gave us a 2 hour window from 2am to 4am, then we could only close the walkway in 15 minute increments every 30 minutes... Not the casino, the state. That's how much tax revenue they make... anyway, the locals would get so bent out of shape when they couldn't get on or get off the boat during those 15 minute windows! We would have had the job done in the 2 hours if the casino had properly maintained the cylinder heim joints on the ends. But they were seized up on the pins. I still remember that day like it was yesterday. Kind of fun getting a full day of work in by 11am...

My motivation changes up and down, my directions change a lot, and my perfectionism gets in the way more than a time or two. It reads like an industrial soap opera.

Broadcasters can be pretty bad when it comes to towers, but this morning we are changing bulbs on another tower, one that has two FM stations and both are shutting down (going off air) for a 3 hour window, most likely a lot less time, but it is easier to tell them that than it is to tell them you need more time mid stream.

Yesterday afternoon my back started hurting, I have no clue what I did, it hurt last night, it hurt while sleeping, it hurts right now. Not the usual feeling I have, this is like a dull but consistent ache, hopefully today it starts to feel better.

Have a good day.

Bulb change went well, found a wiring issue that needs attention. My back is not so bad now, hopefully I can keep it that way.

New neighbor to the tower property is going to be a problem, his wife inherited the land and they are trying to build a house, there is this huge settlement agreement that he has to follow as the previous owner and three other land owners were in a huge dispute over property boundaries and access issues. He is acting like he doesn’t care what the agreement says and it is his land so too bad. I have a feeling things will end up getting ugly, I have tried to be neighborly, but just another mess to deal with. He just smiles one of those big FU smiles, but his attorney will set him straight, if not we will be in mediation again. My Dad has purchased all the other land, so now it is only down to this guy and us. I think once he realizes that he has to pay for a 500’ long city street per the settlement agreement he may end up selling to us as well. We have offered a land swap, but they essentially ignored us. At least I enjoy this type of stuff.

Only broadcast i like are vintage twilight zone episodes... for me... it's current reality.

Wish i lived in Maine right now... Strouty could help me diagnose a noisy bearing somewhere driven by the serpentine belt on my Forrester... I got the troubleshooting that close at least...

With that radio guy... I would not have hesitated locking his stuff off while you did your job.

Hence the reason I binge read your entire thread a couple of weekends ago and continue to stay updated on your adventures. You inspire me to get off my 70 year old **** and go play in my shop and barn. I'm even salvaging stuff out and planning some new projects!

They make a stethoscope thing, sold aluminum rod, you can usually find them at NAPA for a few bucks, should make isolating the bearing much easier. I would pull the belt and spin everything by hand to see if anything is dry. First guess would be the idler itself.

Scooter, glad I could help, I feel like we all motivate each other most of the time.

I was thinking the same thing, it is probably an idler. I use a very long screwdriver held to my ear and touch things that are not moving like the bolt holding the idler. It will resonate through the plastic handle very well.

Yup, anything like that will work, it is amazing how well it works, I know Pines will have something like that.

My back is much better than this morning, even went to pick up file cabinets and other stuff. I am unloading a few things now, bought a parts washer for $75, pump sound like it will work, needs a good cleaning, have another one, but it is too tippy, this is a four leg unit. I think I need to add wheels and do a few things, but it will be a nice project (no! not another one!). I also bought a stainless steel dish rack thing, I am planning on cutting off the feet and using it on the wall for chemicals and such what.

Right now I am just making some room to get things inside, all the file cabinets have to go upstairs at the office, not looking forward to that, but it has to be done.

That should have said 44. I may have enjoyed a little Jameson's before I posted that.

Yes the black barrel is good. I also like the Makers mark 46. Or Bushmills single malt.

Strouty, take care of that back. I finally had to have surgery after many years of overdoing it with mine. My wife got tired of my crawling around on my hands and knees to get to the bathroom on bad days. When I went in for an MRI I was joking around with the Tech before the procedure. After it was over she was very concerned about my ability to get my pants back on by myself. Two days later I had 2 1/2 disc removed and a titanium put in their place, I told my wife at least I have scrap value now.

Up to page 74.

Scrap value, love it!

I didn’t get as much done as I would have liked, but I did get things into the shop. Tomorrow I need to get Bev’s tires swapped, it needs to be a priority. Once Bev is over at the inspection place, then I can clean up the shop a bit, I still have to organize things better on the new pallet racking, too much wasted space right now.

And a picture of the big taco for fun.

I don’t know what this one holds, I grew up with a larger version of this one, so this is a bit of nostalgia as well as future function.

Got almost all my errands done, one more stop then I can get working on the tire swap for Bev.

Almost done, snap on driver rudely interrupted my work, stole a bunch of money out of my wallet, then drove off.

I would post a picture, but I would make the jack stand guys mad. I need some better stands or a nice concrete apron to work on. Dirt *****.

Oh I hated it when the Mac tool guy left my house back in the day.

You mentioned the stands, now you have to post them!

Feeling better?

There was nothing to post, no evidence, not one bit.

Tires are on, balanced is another thing, stud piloted wheels are much better than hub piloted like these. I think they make shim kits to center them, I used a pry bar, the drive will tell if they are balanced or not. At this point they won’t stop the inspection sticker, it will be something else. These guys usually go easy on me, I don’t put a lot of miles on Bev and they know I am taking it off the road in a week.

I am getting caught up on this thread. Couldn't sleep last night so I sat and read.

A couple pics of the dump trailer.

The best piece of equipment I have bought is my dump trailer. I got it from a guy who used to install antennas on towers. He only used it to haul cardboard from his installs.

Mine is a bit smaller. (ANd I never should have sold that truck)

I guess people really like fire trucks. I wasn’t sure, but now I am a fan too.
Me too

That looks like a nice trailer for sure.

Today has been a cluster, I had to unload and lug a bunch of file cabinets upstairs to the office, took me about an hour between removing the drawers and lugging things upstairs. Got that done, then had to load and deliver a truck body to a friend, unfortunately it wasn’t one of mine, it was one of Dad’s. Then another buddy needed to be picked up and brought back to his shop, I was close enough, so I made it work. I am now eating lunch, then have a few errands to do, tomorrow is going to be all office it looks like. I did make an appearance at the shop, not that I did anything, really just picked up the mail and dropped off a few things.

Strouty, If you're down in the OOB area there is a new place called 'Taqueria 207' where Ocean Pizza used to be. So far the food has been pretty good.

I did it. I am all caught up now. And i thought I had too many trucks.

Can you have too many? ;)

Will have to check it out, I am always up for new places.

I have another day of office, then I am going to spend a few days at the shop, I am sure there will be the occasional interruption, but the plan is to spend most of Friday and all of Saturday there. Looks like from Sunday on it will be raining off and on for about a week, that should give me some more time to get things done in the office without feeling like I am missing out at the shop.

Bev passed inspection and she is back home, no vibration issues with the tires, I thought that was a good thing.

Now I am at one of towers meeting with my Dad and his helper to try and figure out how we are replacing a tower without changing the location of it. I feel like I should talk to David Copperfield about it, he could come over and cover the entire tower with a blanket then on national television he could unveil a new one without having any work done. That would be nice.

Easy... make the new tower have a larger footprint... build it over the old one.

Bet my solution doesn't have the impact of the whole story... but we are feeling your pain.
That was my first thought then I remember Stroudy saying something about they could not be on the tower while it was in use. We had to apply to the fcc to move our antenna from one tower to another. Like you said there are things we dont know.
