Where do you see 15XX series 1/4-inch drive sockets listed in the 1937 catalog, horse? What page?

Look on page 19 of the 1937 catalog near the top and you should see both. I probably should have mentioned that the 1/4 inchers were introduced in 35 but I knew that the lock on set was 37 for sure. I have the entire set. :)

?? There are no 15xx sockets listed at the top of page 19 or anywhere else in the 1937 catalog I am looking at. Please post a scan of the whole page of the catalog you have. Or are you talking about the figure? That single figure of a socket is labeled "No. 21006 series". You can't ignore the title of the figure. And you can't ignore the list - by model numbers 21006 through 21014 - of 12 point 1/4 sockets offered in that catalog, by size and price. There are no 15xx sockets listed/offered. EDIT: See post above for more detailed explanation.

Yea, it's just the figure. I posted a scan of the page but for some reason it didn't attach it as a thumbnail like it normally does. :dunno:

Anyhow, both sets are pre 38 like the OP suspected from the start.

I was happy to find them. I come across very little blackhawk midget stuff, so two sets in one box kind of surprised me.

I went through about 1/2 of this thread and didn't see one of these, it's a one end frame lift. I've owned it for about 30 years. The pics are old, I could get better ones when it's light out.

Can't read your model #, but I have a similar one - a "Service Chief" SJ-25.

Haven't been able to find another example of this wrench on the bay of e, or anywhere else for that matter. I had to have it once I laid eyes on it that cloudy Sunday afternoon. It's a Blackhawk 8 Point 1/2 x 7/16 Double Box End Wrench #4016. Any input is greatly appreciated! 760bfd1e754bd7bf1c5f79f1db58c8f9.jpg1618bb1cb5269d663e06f0ba3d852db1.jpg

I have the same wrench by Bonney; I believe other brands made that specific wrench as well.

Mine is identical to yours. No decal as it has been painted gray. Mine is missing the ball on top of the release lever. I have not found a lot of use for it except for receiver hitch installation, and once I used it to lower a heavy drill press from my truck bed.

Found an 016 at the flea, 1/2" square on both ends, a little loose on my Milwaukee gun.
1925ish to hear AA tell it. I wasn't able to discern any paint or coating.

Yes, and they seem to be far more common than one would think, going by the number of them appearing on Ebay.

I forgot to post my update, I was using the wrong search criteria. Ford brake wrench was the correct answer. I was just searching Blackhawk 0416 ford brake adjustment tool, or something similar. Thanks everyone for the helpful input!

^ better results on ebay with broader search parameters. downside is that you have to scroll through a lot of stuff you're not looking for.

if you're looking for something here, sometimes it works much better to search with Google and add the site name, i.e.:

Ford brake wrench garagejournal.com

Thanks for the tip! The Google search seems more practical rather than the wonderful search function...which displays 6489 results that match my query it seems, lol.

Here is the current progress on my treasure chest. I think the 1/2" sockets are I little early for it, but when hunting for old blackhawk stuff you can't afford be too choosy.

OTG--Very nice stuff you have there-mostly hard to find items here as this is where they started and not much found at the local sales. Usually find one or two items at a time-piecemeal!

Oldtuleguy, that is one hell of a Blackhawk set you got there. Thanks for posting it so we can only dream of finding one ourselves.

here's a fabulous set just sitting and waiting for a new owner.
I know I sound like a broken record on this point, but Blackhawk doesn't get enough credit for its design principles, which were extraordinary for such an early era. No better example than the handle on these early attache style cases. They could've put anything on there. But they chose to use the same rotating grip they use on the handles on the tools inside. That is attention to detail, a desire to marry form and function, and a conscious style decision.

I do wonder why the decal on this set doesn't have a set number. As any Q.D. collector knows, the set model number is the number of pieces in the set. To wit, a No. 18-A set had eighteen (18) pieces, a No. 32-CD set had thirty-two (32) pieces, etc. And they were put on a flying folded banner like decal just underneath the brand decal. And that case and decal is in such excellent condition, it’s unlikely to have come off. It looks like it never had one.

It's only the second set I have seen without one. The first was just posted at the end of my old GJ Q.D. 32-CD restoration thread, page 2, post #26, linked here.

At first I thought it might’ve been an early set, before they came in different sizes. But that rotating grip wasn’t patented until 1926, and they were already using four different set numbers for four different set configurations in the 1926 Catalog.

EDIT: Disregard last comment about the set at the end of my resto thread not having a set number decal. It does. Very faint. No. 32-C.

Very nice collection.. The ratchet in your pics is a fairly desirable late 40s to 50s style.
