Something I never expected to own. I was about to settle up on some Craftsman stuff today when the seller asked me if I might be interested in a "weird box that looks like a bomb" that he had out in his trailer. Unfortunately the box has been spray bombed but it's dent and rust free. I've rolled through this thread pretty quickly so forgive me if I've missed it but does anyone have a list of what all came in this set? I've jogged what's in here against Don's pristine set and it appears that I'm missing 7 pieces that he has however I have several 6pt deep wells that are not in his set. I generally just clean an old box up and enjoy the patina but seeing how this has been bombed and is missing the decals, this one will get a full refurb.

Here is what I have on the nugget sets. It looks like there were 2 different sets sold one with 30 pieces and one with 49.

I have several 6pt deep wells that are not in his set. I generally just clean an old box up and enjoy the patina but seeing how this has been bombed and is missing the decals, this one will get a full refurb.

Nice snag on the "Nugget" set....

The six pointers are know as Aero-Type sockets. If they haven't already rotted away, you should be able to see a rubber insert in them. Interestingly, these particular sockets seem to be tougher to find than a lot of the other 7/16" drive pieces. They're also probably add-on pieces as they were not part of the normal compliment for the 30k and 49k sets.

Wow! It's always fun solving a mystery. Thanks CRTDI! Between what Don sent me last night and what you've sent, I'm tracking pretty good on the inventory of this thing. Apparently I've got the 49K set however I'm missing a total of nine pieces. I'll try to track the missing pieces down but I'm guessing these things don't turn up frequently. I've got 7 add on pieces, 5 of the Aero-Type sockets (2 with the rubber still in them, thanks for that clue) and 2 of the Phillips tips.

I ordered a set of those decals the day I brought this thing home and will start refinishing the box as soon as we stop fluctuating between 28 and 74 degrees here in the south.

Thanks again for the help gents, it's priceless. If any of you have spares of the following that you're willing to part with for sale or trade, please let me know.

If you're looking for a source on a decal, I had one made by a guy who specializes in WWII decals for WWII equipment. He is not a tool guy and does not have an archive of tool mfgr decals, but he did take on my Blackhawk Q.D. 32-CD set decal as a project upon email query. All he needs is a high-res image. Water transfer. Link to his repro decal for my box in this thread here. There are probably other sources. Other members may chime in with theirs. In fact, there's a guy doing CRAFTSMAN grinder decals here on GJ. I believe those were vinyl. He may branch out. I don't know. Just an idea.

Thanks for the info Lugz. That decal you had made looks great. I'd much rather go waterslide than vinyl. Would you please PM the email of the guy that made yours? I've already ordered the vinyl decals from the eBay buy but I'm leaning towards making high res scans of those and having waterslides made. The vinyl ones can adorn the beer fridge.

The guy making the Cman decals does incredible work. I'll inquire of him as well in regards to waterslides.

Thanks. Midwest. Makes sense. Blackhawk was very much a national brand, of course, but it does seem to show up in the middle with greater alacrity. As you have seen, I find plenty of Blackhawk in the wild over here in NJ in onesy-twosies, but I have only found two (2) complete sets, both Q.D. era, the 32CD and the 18A, in nearly 10 years.

I favor preservation, but given the excellent condition of the paint on the inside of that box (at least judging by the paint around the decal), the near perfect decal, and the intact brass tag, I would be tempted to carefully repaint the outside only and shine up that brass tag. Picture that. It would be the nicest and most complete representation of a Treasure Chest I have ever seen. Then I would move all my Q.D. stuff inside it!

Yea, it was a long distance assist from a buddy down in North Carolina. I've resisted the urge to restore the exterior of the box thus far but if the mood catches me right...well...you know this goes.

Picked up this Blackhawk hydraulic cylinder/Ram in a box lot of stuff that bought at a recent auction. Reads "Made expressly for Bear Manufacturing Co. Model R931." Unfortunately, the tonnage rating has been worn off. Anyone have an idea of what the capacity of the cylinder would be? It is pretty dirty as I haven't cleaned it up yet. Cylinder housing is aluminum and the whole thing weighs just over 8 pounds.

CL find. Blackhawk No. 4 set. Unfortunately the 911 ratchet is less than stellar (missing one screw and the entire directional lever) but I couldn't pass up the arrowhead sockets. A first for me and they're marked "USA", not "Made in USA" so I'm assuming an earlier version. Every 911 rat I've seen in pics is broken. I'm assuming it was a weak design, hence the change to 911X. Has anyone ever seen a functional 911 rat or am I chasing unicorns trying to find one?

I have one very early 911 from a no. 10 set circa 1919, does NOT work, only marked blackhawk 911. I have a later no. 8 set with a 911x, circa 1924, works great! The early 911 was weak, and broke easily, so very hard to find a nice one. Nice no. 4 set!

Thanks OTG. That's what I was thinking, the 911s were a bad design and they went another route. Gotta love those arrowheads though!

You can date them by the logo, early sockets only had u.s.a stamped under the Indian head logo, 21 22 (no way to say for sure)usa moved to the right of logo, then through 25 or so, also stamped "made in" to left of logo. Yours looks to be 21 or so. Just an estimation. Can't make out the logo too well in your pics

I'll take better pics tomorrow but their stamped USA under the logo if I recall correctly. Thanks for the info. Also have an "extra" arrowhead socket that doesn't belong. There was an old Bonney socket in there as well.
