You're further than me lol I still have to finish mine but, I also need to pull the 350 still lmao.
Well if the 350 still runs you are in good shape, hopefully you don't have as much fiddley stuff to track down and make work. This has been a lot more drawn out than I'd have hoped, but all part of it I guess.
That's a lot of laps JB! Maybe you better increase the gas tank size!
I don't think I'll be able to get the entire race in on one tank, I should be able to do at least half of it, then will come in for a fill-up and a shot of water/Gatorade to help with the last half. If all goes well I should be done in under 90 minutes.

It runs, but is being pulled in favor of a newer 5.3L LS, and a stronger transmission(TH400 or 4L80e). I am leaning towards the TH400 as I already have a 3.42 rear end waiting for me to swap in and if I went with the 80E I'd have to re-gear differently(3.73 or 4.10).

Mini bike race sounds like a young man’s sport but if you are up to it then I say go for it. Any chance your bride or daughters can shoot a few videos to post for us to watch.

Even though I can wire a house wiring a car has me shaking my head so hoping for the best in your adventure doing that.

Busy man.

Progress all the way.

Well done
Thank you Grizz, no time to rest, well unless I get too cold, I've decided working in the cold just isn't worth it right now. Hopefully we are past the worst of it now with some nice warm temps on the way.

I remembered you were headed that direction, I personally love the 80e and with the OD gear in that and 3.42 gears you will get some decent mileage when on the highway, if I were to get new gears in my cobra they would be much closer to that than the 3.70's I have now.

I'm sure I'll feel like an old man by the time I get done with it, but most of the people racing are around my same age, a few younger and a few older. Family isn't tagging along for this one, but I'll have some of the other people there get some photos to hopefully share with ya'll.

I'm now comfortable wiring a house, my first few experiences were not great. :shocking:A car is simple in comparison, power and ground, signal to relay etc. the computer side of the wiring was already done so my involvement has been pretty small really. Shorten here, lengthen there, tie this to that etc.

As mentioned previously I have photos now, first off here is the new hydraulic brake on the mini bike:
IMG_3513.JPG

Not sure why there is so much splatter on these welds, I've started noticing that on this welder with the last few I've done on it and I'll need to investigate more, any ideas?

Here is the O2 sensor installed and wiring complete for it:
IMG_3514.JPG

It had a protective coating on it but I decided to add some abrasion resistance to it as well and held it on by a soft P clamp.

Then just a photo of the engine with some wiring because I can:

It is coming right along. You will be caught in a rainstorm with no roof in no time.
Thanks for reminding me of that @mybigwarwagon, I now have one more thing to look forward to.

All,
I managed a bit of time working on it last night and have the power and ground wires for the Holley TermX controller installed, I was surprised the harness I ordered was long enough to run from the controller under the dash all of the way back to the battery in the trunk and had just a bit left over to cut off. One step closer.

I did forget to mention I have the alternator wiring to finish as well, so that and the drivers side knock sensor and I'll be out of the wiring game...unless I let the smoke out of something somewhere.

I find that if the area prep is not good, it splatters more.

What about the actual steel you are welding, could it be the quality of the steel ?
I'm leaning toward something on the welder went bad, it is 10 years old now as are all of the components. I have used it on new steel ground down to shiny metal and it was still doing it. I thought purge was too low, that didn't help, I don't use it often but will dig into it at some point to try to find out.

check gas flow and tip stickout. Sometimes the gas nozzles wear and tip is way out of gas envelope, then lots of spatter even with flow.

MIG welder right?
Looks like gas isnt coming out of the gun, liner maybe?
Is the best way to do that to submerge the line in water while flowing gas to gun?

What should that look like, the tips are threaded in, and the outer part of the tip (the part that fits around the tip about 1/8" or so making it ~1/2" diameter) has a push to seat that only lets it go so far. I'd like to think they made it idiot proof, but they may have found a big enough idiot.

800 HP is nuts enough in a standard bodied car - any car. In a lightweight car like a Cobra at ~2300 Lbs. hang on, have a lot of insurance and a significant budget for rear hoops. Factory Five bodies are between 150-200 Lbs. let's call it a 100 Lb. save. For comparison, a Mazda Miata tips in at 2341 Lbs. Complete tire liquefaction seems about right.

JB,

you see this? i could only imagine the fun this would produce

I have seen that before, I want to say I saw the price was going to be at or near 7 figures, I think I'll have to pass. There was a company selling CF bodies a while back, but I already had mine by the time I saw them. Now if someone hits my car in a parking lot and ruins the body I have some good ideas. :)

I think it would be an absolute blast, but also need extra shorts to deal with it.

I didn't make any progress on the cobra over the weekend but I did manage to attend an event in southern Oklahoma called the Lime 100 which is a mini bike enduro event. .38 mile course, 100 laps, 46 total bikes and riders. I pre-ran the course on Friday before it was graded and went a bit wide on a corner, hit some big holes off the track and lost it. I broke the visor on my new helmet and a couple of scrapes and soreness but fine otherwise:
IMG_3537.JPG

I did get called out to help pull a Jeep out that was stuck:
IMG_3538.JPG

In the morning before our event there was a rallycross event, a friend of mine had his son drive his Toyota truck in it and he was having a blast:
IMG_3551.JPG

One of the more unique cars on the grid was this Civic with functioning aero:
IMG_3540.JPG

I liked this RX-7 still running the rotary as well:
IMG_3544.JPG

The bikes started in 3 waves, stock started first, 30 minutes later hardtail outlaw (internal engine modifications), my class, then 30 minutes later soft tail outlaw started, first wave:
IMG_3552.JPG

I never dropped my bike, I did do a bit of sliding and it kept dying on me after the first half or so, I'd go off track and it would start back up in a few pulls. I managed to loose a good bit of oil out of the vent, I'll have to figure that one out along with why it was dying. It would sputter a bit, stumble, then eventually die. It does this same thing to me when I go full throttle on the road for over 1/2 mile, I didn't think it would do it during the race as I wasn't on the throttle that long without lifting for a turn. I suspect it was due to fuel starvation and running the carb bowl dry but could be wrong. Here was the bike after the race:
IMG_3555.JPG

Buddy and I after the race, he is the one that bought the BMW Z4 from me:
IMG_7484.JPG

That night we convinced his wife to take her Jeep out along with another person there and found the last mud hole in the state, it was very stuck:
IMG_3562.JPG

Managed to get it pulled out pretty easy and we made a course correction and headed back to camp.

Now onto the shop, the tractor that was split in my shop since late summer is now gone and back in service, I have a ton of open space now, I'm pretty excited about that. Also I got a call this morning my intake is done and is being shipped today, I should have it late this week, hopefully I can start the car by this weekend if all goes well. Fingers and toes crossed X

JB looks like a pretty wild time at the event! Pulling a Jeep out with HT tires...hope that didn't bruise their ego too much.

Wrecking as you get older makes you more cautious...takes longer to heal up , glad it was just your visor and not the grey matter contained within the brain bucket!

It was very cool, not too wild all around really, just some cool things going on. Just to make him feel a little better I did put it in 4wd, he was in a Rubicon though so I'm sure that hurt a bit.

I was amazed at the average age out there, a vast majority of competitors were in their 30's and 40's a few in 20's and at least one in 60's. The two fastest were 55 and 64, but they didn't wreck and had amazing skill.

I was glad the gray matter was in good shape as well, which is why I was wearing the helmet, my biggest regret was no one had it on video. :(

Excellent weekend by the looks of it.
It was certainly a good time, I'm having a hard time not picking up a second mini bike to make into an all out race bike...but the cobra first.
I agree, wholeheartedly.
With racer in your name I'd suspect so, no matter the race I just enjoy competing.
Looks like a blast. Glad you didn't mash your brain.
Me too @mybigwarwagon, me too. Someone I've met at other events was there with his mini and I asked why he wasn't racing, turns out since the last I'd seen him he'd gotten into an accident and now has a plate in his head.

A bit more progress earlier this week, I got the controller mounted for the final time, I had to use button head cap crews to mount it to the bracket I made, with rubber grommets on all mounting locations to hopefully reduce high frequency vibration:
IMG_3566.JPG

Then I mounted the power distribution block and wired it all in:
IMG_3567.JPG

I'll wrap the last few wire bundles in loom when I run them to the engine bay, they are mostly gauge wires that I'll have to terminate to their new destination but I'm nearly there. I did extend the knock sensor harness last night so the list is getting shorter.

I also finished, or so I thought, a build on a medium range rifle:
IMG_3572.JPG

I had to put the scope pretty far forward for eye relief and am not happy with that so I have a longer stock on order with an adjustable cheek rest as well as length so I can mount the scope a bit further back and be more comfortable shooting it. It sure is fun though.

That PDB looks like the one I use on my builds. Did you get it from CE Auto Electric?

What is the length of pull with your current stock in the farthest position out?

Looks like a fun weekend and you're making good progress on the wiring. Once I get some of the last clean-up projects from my shop build knocked out and some springtime chores done, I hope to get my project car moved over so I can get it running.

Amazon, it is a JQuad brand according to them, I'll post a link below. I'm not sure on the current length, when I get the new stock I'll try to remember to measure the difference between them.
I also need to figure out a PDB for the truck, thanks for the visual on the one you use.

Nice camping chair.
You know the feeling all too well I'm sure. I had it in my truck still, works great.

What are you working on again, I can't remember. Weather is getting nicer and I really don't like the cold, progress would be great if I wasn't going to be out of state for so long.

The engine swap and suspension overhaul on my Audi.
Oh that's right, I should have looked at your thread to remind myself. Speaking of, if you change the wording on your thread link in your signature it'll make it easier to know what that it is your thread. I could just be old and slow on tech too.

Well poo, the intake was supposed to be delivered today on the big brown truck, another package from the white truck was scheduled as well. The brown truck "couldn't" make it down my road but the white truck made it just fine. So it looks like little progress will be made this weekend on the cobra.
