As I mentioned on Andy's thread he decided to save me a trip and came by to pick up the aluminum and brass I'd collected for him. He also brought by a little present but I can't share it until Herb comes to visit/pick up the hearse. :bounce: For those curious that haven't read his thread he is doing well just hasn't felt the need to work in the shop or get online.

You can see in the photo The Lemon is in the shop, it was due for an oil change so I knocked that out and while it was in the shop I installed the CD player that came from the other yellow car, and a small subwoofer and amp I had laying around. That car has been fun to drive since it started back in active duty, but when driving at night the lights coming in through the back glass were terrible. It is tough to see but I did tint the windows and it has made a world of difference!

Longer ago than I want to admit to the light in the house garage started acting up, the ballast was going out, I finely replaced it and changed the T12 bulbs over to LED with daylight bolts. I took a before photo but it was all black...

After:

Well I spent an hour or so cleaning up in there and eventually ended up like this:

Hmmmm why are those there? Things are getting interesting:

A little more progress, side pipes, headers, starter, driveshaft, and wiring removed. Trans is drained and only a couple more bolts holding it in. If all goes well I'll be pulling the engine tomorrow after work in the daylight. :)

Whatcha doin'?? :headscrat

I hope to fix my shimmering oil problem this winter.

Well, I will send you my burb and you can swap that.

From the troubles I've seen you go through on that I'll do a bit hard pass!

you changing motors in the snake?

Hopefully most of the same engine, probably a different set of heads and cam but I'll re-use the intake, carb, and exhaust. I'll replace all of the bearings, gaskets, seals, water pump, timing chain if needed etc. I also need to take the trans apart and swap in a good synchro from the other bad trans in the corner.

This morning was a good jump ahead, trans is out, carb is off, cooling system drained, and everything removed from the engine but the engine mounts. I'll pull the engine out tonight after work and hopefully clean the engine bay a bit.

I am done working on it. The garage drained the oil and pieces of rod bearing came out. Going to look at another truck this weekend.

Sorry to hear, but by the sounds of it that thing was cursed, better to get that evil out of your life.

Drives,
I doubt I'll change the avatar, 1/2 the people wouldn't know who I was if I did. :spit: What I'm slightly afraid of is it'll be too cold to drive it when I get it all back together.

Pulled 4 bolts that hold the engine mounts to the frame and just like that:
attachment.php

I didn't expect to find this however:
attachment.php

Yeah that is water running out of the frame, it only happened on the drivers side and surprisingly was very clear. :headscrat

The next surprise was when I pulled the clutch to mount it on an engine stand:
attachment.php

I'd say it has seen better days, I'm struggling to convince myself I have to replace it, I really just want another couple of years out of this combo. Thoughts?

Finely one of the hole garage with the engine out and on the stand:

It has been nice to work on something that only had 8 or so wires on the entire engine, so simple to work on.

Replace it now while you have it apart. Unless you really really like taking that apart again. It's not like you don't have anything else to work on. ;)

JB: well maybe it will be spring when you get it back together and the weather will be awesome again.

ok i'm just kidding, but GEESH some of you guys pull an engine way too easy. at least your Cobra has it's own garage to sit for a bit while you figure it out or is that the pink jeep's garage you borrowed?

sorry to see you have some unexpected issues. any idea where the water or clear fluid came from? I agree if you can find some extra funds to put a new replacement in then do it and one less thing to think about or change next time.

does Andy's aluminum foot pedal go on a tractor or one of your cars or trucks?

have a great day!!!

I may have to do that, when I typed that this morning I hadn't thought about resurfacing it.

I do enjoy taking things apart, but have a lot of stuff I need to put back together too. I'm having a hard time doing a "mild" rebuild when I keep seeing so many shiny parts.

Agreed

Rebuild/Replace....it's apart now.

I guess I'll have to give in to peer pressure and do that, thanks for the input guys.

Drives,
If I knew what I'd find when opening up the engine I'd have already ordered the parts, but I don't know anything about it so I'm winging it. Hopefully it doesn't take until spring but I'm doing it now just in case it does. That is the the house garage where the cobra stays, sadly the pink Jeep stays outside most of the time.

I'm sure the water got in there from the rain I drove it in this summer, but not sure how exactly. Maybe I need to drill drain holds and install drain plugs. :bounce:

The pedal can go on any of them but I'll put it on one of the cars/trucks. It won't fit in the cobra foot well though sadly.

JB, I think you should shop for a triple disk clutch. Then the price of a new flywheel and performance single disk clutch will turn into a no brainer decision. I checked the price of two-piece replacement rotors for my Cadillac CTS-V and decided to drive the car less and avoid using the brakes when I do drive it.

Engine braking works great and can sometimes entertain with some nice pop pops. I of course looked at triple disc clutches and stroked Dart blocks with the best of the best, came up with a budget, cut a zero off and am back to reality. :bounce:

The frame on my Cobra has a little hole drilled in each end of the main frame tubes both front and back for drainage. Although I can count on two fingers the times I was caught in the rain with it. :D

This now has me thinking, can you train an owl or even a hawk to only poo outside? Training a hawk if falconry, what is training an owl called?

JB

Not likely, but once you identify the favorite perch, it wouldn’t be too hard to erect an awning above anything underneath...

I (totally un-informed theory, here) think any bird of prey training is falconry, but owls work at night so are less reliable than those who commit rodenticide during daylight hours.

I only had a cat once, and haven't had a reason since... but I'd get three to save the labor of one of your "bad days."

Unfortunately I don't think I have enough fingers or toes to count how many times I've been rained on in that car. I'll drill the holes before I reinstall the engine.

As appealing as the idea of having a pet owl is I don't really believe I have the time to train one. :(

All,
I don't recall if I mentioned I received a power washer or not but put it together and fired it up Friday to clean the engine and engine bay. I should have picked one up a long time ago, it is so much cleaner and gets there so much faster than before. While cleaning the engine I hit the engine stand a little and noticed the concrete outside of the house garage was dirty, then came the brick landing on the front porch, propane tank, part of the side of the house, etc. I think I'm hooked and just ran out of time or I'd have pressure washed everything I own.

I have the engine torn completely down other than actually removing the pistons and crank but have looked at all of the bearings. To my surprise everything looks pretty decent. I'll take some measurements and get some new bearings on order as they are showing wear and for the time/price I might as well. I'll get some photos later, the once I took didn't turn out.

Fingers crossed I mowed the last time this season after our first frost melted. Burned a big pile of limbs and cut a few more scrub trees down. Busy fun weekend all in all.

JB: good to hear you have a pressure washer cause OMG they come in handy. I had to clean up the outside of my shop that had metal siding on it and heard from another member that this power nozzle would work better than the 4 nozzles that came with my Honda pressure washer.

OMG the power nozzle will have you cleaning anything and everything and I actually only stopped using mine because I used it so much I shook a bolt out of it and I need to fix it before I use it again.

here's the power nozzle I bought at Home Depot and i'm sure they have a ton of choices online.

also FYI in case you don't already know this. I use non ethanol gas in my small engines and I had a friend put in his Amsoil stabilizer and dang I think i'm still using the 10 gallons he picked up out by his farm 5 or so years ago and it's still good gas. I also haven't had any carb issues even though I try to run them dry for sitting long periods I've got so many it's sometimes hard to remember to get to them all.

keep up the good work!!

I've heard of the turbo nozzles before and used one once, I'll do some digging for one and hopefully pick it up. I do use gasoline with ethanol in it, I just make sure I buy small equipment that is compatible with ethanol which I think most if not all are now. I only started buying small engines after gas had blends in it for a few years so that could be part of the reason, plus for as much gas as I go through a carb rebuild or new fuel line is cheap rather than paying $0.30/gallon more for ethanol free. I do run fuel stabilizer in all of mine before the winter season though.

If you leave it sitting with ethanol on in it for any period of time the compatibility won't matter. Always run them dry if you aren't' going to use them for a week or so. Ethanol gets nasty when it goes bad.

I need to get better about doing that, but perhaps luckily I haven't experienced that to date. Thanks for the tip though.

All,
I did some more looking and measuring on the engine last night, it has for sure been rebuilt once, the rod bearings are .010" smaller (larger?) than factory, crank are factory size, off to order my rebuild kit I guess....I didn't click submit until later so now the bearings and gaskets are on order.

Followup, an interesting revelation, I was working to get the date codes to further investigate what I have. Well the engine if from a 1972, one head is a '78, the other is an '85. Not a huge deal as the intake and exhaust valves are at least the same size...but not the combustion chambers, one is 69 cm^3 the other is 66 cm^3.

Given my current goals and known information I think I'll just stick with them as much as it pains me to not have a matching set. My reasoning a good set of cast iron heads are worth 40 hp and will cost $500 or so, port matching the set I have may only net 10 hp but only cost $35 and some time. If I get really bored I may even build a low buck flow bench that will only be good to test flows relatively but should work nonetheless.

My experience is different. I have had no trouble with 10% ethanol gasoline. I do try to drain the carburetors if something is going to sit over winter.

People do have different experiences.

It would be nice to find a matching head. That seems like a lot of difference in compression L/R.

I'm so torn, I can run some numbers and see but with the dish the pistons have I doubt there will be much difference in compression ratio. I really want to build it "right" but I really don't want to spend more than I have to it is a tough line not to cross. I'll see what I can find around here for a reasonable price.

I buy "broken" equipment all the time, that has bad gas in it. I clean the carb, and change the filter and 98% of the time it runs.
