Nice setup JB, I have often considered adding storage to my 60gal upright. I built a "black pipe dryer" for my setup, and even in our humid summers I can paint without any issues.

I received my hydraulic hoses in the mail yesterday, ordered Tuesday morning and received Thursday. Great shipping speed from all the way in New Jersey via usps! Now if only I could figure out why my receipt online was $11 less than what they actually charged, that irked me a bit. I installed them this morning:

I think its a refund, so you can purchase baby wipes to clean the oil off your face. If the need should arise again!

That red on the ketchup tank, almost looks professional?

Good to hear cause I know I can't be the only one that's ever been outside in the garage in a T-shirt and shorts flip-flops no gloves welding and grinding on stuff. Hot ambers flying all over. One drops on your foot and you start hopping around trying to get it from burning your foot and more important burning a hole through your good flip flops. After 2nd time you think well maybe all go put shoes on but say "F" it and I'll just be more careful which includes stepping farher back so ambers won't hit your feet. LOL

Nope, never have I ever done that, never used a grinder in short and burned a hole in them either. I also don't have socks with burn holes in them from weld embers hitting them because I was wearing shorts either. I've also never gotten poison ivy on my hands and taken a leak.

That brought back another memory, one of the first things I welded was back in high school. I was working on a go cart with a friend and we needed to weld a bolt on. Welded it out, pulled off my welding glove and grabbed the bolt to see how strong the weld was.

Yep don't do that again!

Still waiting on some gas tank isolation material to show up before I can make any further headway on Herb's Hearse. In the mean time I have been working on installing the lighting for the lift permanently. I won't spoil the surprise just yet, but it will be pretty cool when completed.

Now it is story time...
Last week we noticed a few lights in the house weren't work, the HVAC was acting up and none of the 220 in the house would work. I did some troubleshooting and determined 1 of the two feeds into the house was dead, 0 volts! That mean half of the breakers in the breaker box were dead and nothing on 220 was going to work. I still had full power to the W.H.H.H. so I knew something was bad between the pole where the power split off and the house. On the other leg I actually had 134 volts which is higher than is allowed. The next morning the power was back on and fine both legs right at 130 volts. However that night while sleeping it went off again.

Here are the splices in question:

The red circle was the bad connection, the green arrow goes to the shop, the yellow arrow to the house, and the other line is the feed from the transformer.

I called the electric Co-op to come check everything out on their end. Turns out the transformer was bad and was feeding 136 volts per leg to our property! That could have been bad and was getting to the point where things start to fry. Luckily the only casualties were possibly some CFL bulbs which are being replaced with bright white LED's.

Well good news is now I was getting 122 volts on each leg which is great. The bad news was I was still having power issues. I knew an electrician was going to be crazy expensive and I didn't know if there were even any that had a bucket truck or the ability to climb the pole in this area.

Luckily I have a lot of brothers and the one that lives the closest is actually a lineman and has his climbing gear!

He stopped by the house yesterday can got right to it. In no time at all he had everything back up and going, he seemed satisfied with the outcome:

Yep I need to clean my desk, but we are back in business and I can't express enough my gratitude for his assistance.



Lastly the HVAC was still having some issues about not coming on when it is supposed to, I think I found the fault, ordered the part and replaced it, it was called a limit switch with a temperature setting. Don't know why, but it was replaced without pictures and is working now as well.

Feels good to be back to normal again.

It was really easy for me to fix, I just had to make the call, run and grab a few things from the W.H.H.H. and watch him work. Then the "pain" of spending $30 for his gas. Yep it was well worth it, no telling how much I would have had to pay someone else. Now it is time to start thinking about some underground feed lines.

I'm lucky to have some talented brothers outside of their normal jobs, but sadly no dentists. I have this one who is a lineman, two that are math teachers, one who gets me discounts at Lowes from 4 states away if needed, and the "baby" who starts college this summer. He plans to go for engineering and maybe even the oil industry so keep an eye out I may have a helper in a few years.

So speaking of brothers, I've mentioned one of them is rebuilding a '68 Camaro and the baby bought a '66 Mustang. The one with the Camaro is also a math teacher and a fellow teacher asked if he and the baby would be willing on rebuilding her deck, she would pay material and just a little labor but also GIVE him a '65 Mustang. I could handle that for a weekends worth of work. He is also the same brother who falls into a cow patty and finds $100 and comes up smelling like a rose. I know he will have a buyer if he decides to sell it though.

JB, just for your info, a repair like that here would be a Power co responsibility.

I had to make a little plate to mount a switch one that required drilling and tapping for 6-32 socket head machine screws, first one went fine, second one I broke the tap in the hole and couldn't get it out. I tried everything I could think of with no luck. So I tossed it in the scrap bin and made a new one, ground off the tap to a new point and actually was able to tap the holes this time. The paint is drying and I'll have photos soon. I hate keeping you all in suspense, but the wait will be worth it I promise.

A lot of places there is no overhead feeder past the meter, but it is quite common around rural areas. Like JB said the power company just won't touch anything on the customer's side of the meter. So his pole, which is looking for retirement, will be his responsibility to replace. Life with personal responsibility!

I actually have 3 cameras that will record video, my phone, a little Cannon I think that I don't use very often, and a 720p HD video camera that hasn't been used since my wedding. The thing is when adventures happen I usually don't expect them. Perhaps that security camera Andy mentions below would be a good option but then ya'll wouldn't leave me alone. However, I am sure I could make it onto America's Funniest Home Videos.

The suspense is now over, here is the big reveal. I had the lights under the lift working, but they were temporarily wired for about 4 month. I came up with my wiring scheme:

I bought all the necessary parts, installed a lot of conduit, elbows, junction box/2 gang box, and ran the power overhead and down the lift column:

Here it is all wired up and ready to test:

The key to the installation is this limit switch:

It is wired in the normally open position so the lights won't come on unless that switch is depressed. You also have to have the switch on the column turned on. This way if I lower a vehicle the lights will automatically turn off and I don't have to worry about forgetting them. Also if I leave a vehicle in the air the switch can be flipped to run them off.

Here is the lift column about 18" (.5m) off the floor just about to trigger the limit switch:

I didn't have much room to work with and with the columns and lift columns both rolled I had even less room. Add to that the very small holes in the switch 6-32 was the largest bolt I could install that is about 1/8" (3.2mm). Also the holes on the switch were so close to the edge I couldn't mount it on the column without this bracket I made. (Painted in a hurry to get it operational, also temp wiring from the switch wiring to the limit switch.) Once installed I'm glad I measured as much as I did, it just barely fit but fits like a glove:

Side story on IP based security systems. I was at work one day and wanted to check my home security system. I forgot and left the app running for an hour. It used 6GB of data in one hour and maxed by monthly LTE data plan. 6 concurrent streams of 1080p will do that to you. (however the app is clearly pretty dumb) Now I use a substream and only connect when on wifi.

Thank you, the lights have been working pretty good so far, they help a ton, but could be brighter, I made the cans big enough to where I could mount 20w LED flood lights if I so choose, but will not likely do that until one of these stops working. The 10w lights are too bright to look at directly, but just so long as I don't look into the sun it is fine. If I go with the 20w in the future I'll scuff up the covers to diffuse the light a bit more.

That is a lot of data real quick. I figure one day we will all talk about data like we used to talk about minutes but for now I'm pretty limited all in all.

I'm right there with you, 10gb on my home internet, and 15gb for phones shared between 5 people. No fun, but luckily after 10bg at home they just cut it WAY back, can hardly open photos with it even.
