And make sure you wear clean underwear.
My mother never told me to wear clean underwear but it was a rule in my wife's family -- you'll embarrass us if you show up in the emergency room with skid marks. Solved the problem for a while until she noticed my underwear was not showing up in the laundry. I recommend camo, brown or plaid if you insist on wearing underwear.

I prefer to always start with a clean pair. What happened after that is out of my control.

No need to show up to the ER with old stains, much better if they know they are minty fresh.

Took me a little while to understand, but I got it in the end...I'll leave it alone now.

Love the cart !! I look forward to seeing it done.. I think that this will need a video attached..

I'm surely need to get a video of events I at least plan to, just like everything I work on it is taking longer than I expected but is progressing slowly.

All,
I have all of the mounts installed and welded out for the engine, I have a few small filler pieces I need to make once I finalize a few other things though. I test fit the engine into the cradle, axle and wheels on, then attached it to the cart:
attachment.php

So far so good, I think I may make some small tab to hook to for moving it with the cherry picker just to make things easier. I need to clearance for the exhaust header, then make sure the radiator is clear of that and shorten some of the hoses a bit before making the mount points for that and the coils. Little by little it is coming together.

Maybe it is your chair, have you tried a sit/stand desk, or one of the ones with a treadmill? I don't remember the suspension being soft in this thing but it sure feels like it now. Maybe the seat won't be too bad.

JB

You just call me fat and say I needed exercise??? Oh yeah:( I am I do.

I would be in great shape if a 96 year old man had not still been driving way after he should have been. He totaled 5 cars and most of my left side. Playing on the field in a car with a nice comfortable seat and full suspension nearly kills me.

Well **** JB, I step away for a moment and your thread goes to ****.

Most people out of state don't know in Oklahoma we keep our underwear clean for four days. I always turn mine inside out but when reversing them to get a fresh spot it's always a little uncomfortable.

From the back pain I have on and off I don't wish it on anyone. It truly stinks that you've had to endure what you have and in reality no amount of money is worth it.

My play is forward, backward, inside out, then inside out and backward. :wtf:

Yup, that's my brother!

I slacked last night, but I did get my new personalized plate in the mail for the S10:

It stands for ***********, the majestic natural ***********, they are bleached to white and cooked to brown. DO NOT SEARCH FOR ***********, I'M SERIOUS DON'T DO IT ESPECIALLY FROM WORK.

If you still did, I'm sorry, but the plate is a very mean joke.

Hi JB,

I finally made it to the end of this epic thread - you're a busy guy! I've greatly enjoyed seeing you knock out project after project in quick succession; nice work.

I love seeing all of the support and cameraderie on this site and your thread is full of it. I'm going to try to get a thread started about my disaster of a shop soon...

I love your kart project, but please consider adding a roll bar, seat belt, and hand restraints. We had a similar kart growing up and it was upside down more than once even with the stock motor (5 hp Briggs). I've run a racing kart with a 20 hp Yamaha 2 stroke engine and a slipper clutch a few times and it would get up to 75 mph pretty quickly. Yours is going to be a rocket in comparison :rocker:

Pressing,
Thank you for following along and I'm impressed you thought it worth while to read everything to date. I say it all the time but it sure seems like my projects take forever to get done. I do enjoy all the other commenting and helping me get problems solved.

This go cart will be a hoot I'm sure, the CBR was rated at 100 hp, I haven't done any math but suspect it'll be capable of 100mph. I don't think that is a good idea and honestly don't think I want to go more than 20-30. The cart has a cage and seat belts but in reality the cage isn't significant enough to do much good in a big crash. It did hold up well in all of the roll overs we did as kids. The seat belts are 3 point and I need to replace, most likely with 4 point belts out of the cobra as they are getting old for it.

I'll post some weekend progress work on it soon.

A little update for ya'll, it sure seems to be taking longer than I wanted but I'm waiting on parts either way so no big deal. I think I've installed the engine for the last time before paint, I'm around 193.5 for install/un-install for this project. I have all of the mounts for the engine made and now have mounts for the exhaust header as well as the radiator. The radiator mount was partially dictated by the hoses:
attachment.php

To save a little time I cut the brackets off of the bike frame and added metal to them. You can see here I used the bike coil mounting bracket along with some extra material to mount the top of the radiator and the coils:
attachment.php

Here is where I am now with most stuff mounted:
attachment.php

I'd suspected the bike had a small fire at one point and I'd say that is confirmed. :lol_hitti I was able to find a new lid online but it was over $100. :shocking: Maybe tape is the way to go for now. :headscrat I'm waiting on sprockets and chain as well as a hub to mount the sprocket, a few misc. screws etc. There is still plenty of work left to do but little by little I'm getting there, started on the wiring which should be pretty straight forward since I'm reusing everything from the bike to a certain extent.

The biggest challenges remaining are the throttle, clutch, and shifter. I have ideas for all three but time will tell if they work or not, I may have other parts that I need to order to make it all work. My first goal is to get it started in the go cart, then figure out the other parts.

I couldn't sleep this morning and wanted to get something accomplished so I started in on the wiring a bit more. I have everything for the back of the harness complete and cleaned up with new split loom. I have most of the routing figured out and temporarily installed. I'll pull a few brackets off of the motorcycle frame to have better mount points then install the battery tray I modified to fit the larger motorcycle battery.
attachment.php

The most time consuming part will be the front wiring harness, most if not all will have to be extended to make it work, until I get further along I'll probably just strip it down and leave it be. Getting closer little by little.

You need one 'a those blue bottles piped into the intakes, ya don't have enough go-go...:spit:

Geez, I think I'd put a restrictor on the throttle, that looks like something that could hurt-ya, quickly.

Are you going to use a solenoid for shifting? Is it a throttle-by-wire?

Driftpin,
It'll be much simpler to do a ratchet style shifter with a single pivot and a hand control. Throttle is throttle by wire, the original motorcycle had a cable for open and close, I'm not sure if I need that or just rely on spring to close.

HHmmmm nitrous would be fun but not likely.

JB,

Long time lurker first time poster. First off, I have to thank Andy and his thread for the tie in to yours. I finally got a chance to read through your entire thread over the past few months and I have to say, your off the rails on the go-kart project......but im along for the ride.

I have a few sets of blue 4/5 point harness's left over from my familys corvette racing days. They are NEW but past certification by a handfull of years. In the interest of keeping you and this thread going......I'd be willing to donate a set to either the cobra or the kart. I'll be back in illinois next weekend going through my fathers garage ( which should be a thread in itself). PM me if your intersted and i'll get them out to you.

BTW, I plan on hitting HRPT in 21' w/ my son who will have his driving permit. It will start off in Madison (my alma mater). Plan is to drive the car back to Colorado after "the long haul" for some family autocrossing/roadracing.

I'm glad you are to the current end and I'm impressed you kept reading, also thank you for posting. The cart (kart?) project has been a blast, sadly I haven't worked on it much the past few days it has gotten down to 14°F (-10°C) the past two nights and I've been working late again.

Great timing on the seat belts, I was just looking for some as the 3 points in it are questionable at best. I'll send a PM, thank you very much for the offer.

If you make the HRPT in '21 it'll be fun to catch up, I'll wait to see the route before I decide if I join on that one. The tough part for me is the last Sunday is Fathers Day and I hate not being home for that.

I’m just here for the kart.

Thanks for tagging along Bighead, if I'm lucky my first post next week will be of me driving it. I'm still waiting on a sprocket the was shipped through DHL...I'm not a fan in the least.

I'm also investigating something that'll fit right in with the go kart but be way less powerful...

Welcome back and thanks for chiming in, it has been an adventure and I don't sleep as much as I should I guess. I have a serious problem with projects and just happened to have pick up another, I'll fill ya'll in later.

Progress is Progress

Very true, sadly no progress today, I had to come into work for a few hours, maybe this afternoon if I get done in time.

I seen something cool today, at our Mc Donalds were 6 cool cars parked out in the street. One was a beautiful Rolls Royce Silver Cloud, One Lambo Countac (sp) One GT40, One GT40 race care with street tag, Sounded so awesome I almost had to smoke a cigarette, and a real AC cobra with no paint just bare aluminum. They all started up the same time and the AV gas from the GT 40 was so good smelling:deathmeta Of course I didn't have a camera.

JB: with all the regular work you do for your job to keep the bills paid i'm not sure how you have any time to work in your garage or do upkeep on your big property.

that said you do seem to get stuff done and one benefit of the job is that you can just get online and order most any new part you need.

the GO CART looks great and would love to see a youtube video of you or your family driving it.

I had to Google *********** and I can't un see that so not sure why you'd like to have that on your truck, but you said it was a mean joke so i'm sure you have your reasons.

hope you are having a great weekend.

I feel your pain with the shipping. I’m waiting on something from fedex that shipped last Thursday and they said would be here next Monday. The package is now an hour away in NJ and they updated the expected delivery to Friday this week. It better get here before then.

I can't take on any outside projects, I'm way too far behind on just my own and keep adding more for no reason.

I don't smoke but think I would have had to have one after seeing all of those cars. Where they from the guys collection in Winfield that is normally in that old gas station?

I do work a lot drives, but also don't sleep enough, I usually wake up before 4 to get a few things knocked out, but occationally wake up at 2 and can't go back to sleep. I do get a total of 42 days a year off between holidays, vacation, and a flex hour program so it is easy enough to get a bit done here and there.

I do spend a few minutes on my smoke breaks researching things to buy for projects so that helps. I'll try to get a video of the cart running and get it posted.

Sorry about the search, but I warned you. I did it as a way to be funny and kinda mean, really it is just a way to make me laugh and any time I can laugh and smile it is a good day. :)

Sadly it still hasn't arrived, I ordered it on the 3rd and it shows it might arrive today, it came from Indiana. Oh well I still made some progress on a few other things while waiting on it.

Ok I have to ask.. What is the status of the cobra engine build? I don't recall hearing about it after the shop told you it was still on the floor where you dropped it off??

Redwolf,
Sorry for the not mentioning anything on it, but I did get an update on Friday. The engine should be done this week, he found the issue with the low oil pressure, and it was entirely my fault. The rod bearings were correct at .010" over sized, however the main bearings should have been .010" over sized as well. This is way too much bearing clearance and will cause all of the oil to go there rather than elsewhere like it should.

A member whom I have a lot of respect for PM'd me to discuss this and mentioned what I should have done. I should have used mic's and bore gauges to measure everything in multiple locations to get the proper fit for all bearings with each rod and main. I didn't do that, I didn't even plastigauge them which would have told me there was a problem before I went too far. This is a learning experience, not sure how I missed it that bad but I did and will have to pay to make up for it. Head held in shame, but a learning lesson either way and one I won't make again. I didn't mention his name or handle because it was in a PM and I want to respect that privacy but thank you.

Okay, I'll start off with what I didn't get photos of, the J.D. 4010, new battery went in, I built new cables for the ground and starter and it would crank over. Success, pulled the plugs, installed all new plugs, then went to install the plug wires and they are the cut and crimp to fit your needs kind. :headscrat I have a plug terminal coming this way.

I had some trouble coming back to work from home the other day, it felt like my rear brake was dragging, from what I could see it wasn't too bad so I kept coming to work and figured I'd have a better look at it after work. Another mistake, rather than just chew through the pad material I chewed through the pad and part of the piston as well:
attachment.php

This is what I pulled out:
attachment.php

Yeah a rebuild kit isn't going to cut it this time...New caliper is on order along with new pads. I kinda wonder why this happened and perhaps I shouldn't drive with headphones in. :shocking:

Well to get it into the shop to work (projects are stacking up) I needed to get the go cart more back together. I modified the old batter box and installed it:
attachment.php

Then added mounts for some of the electrical components:
attachment.php

Then it seemed like it was time to install the brake light and blinkers, I mean why not if I have them:
attachment.php

All of that looks like it would only take a few minutes but lots of fiddling and fitting was involved before I could strike the first arc to weld them on. Next up was the sprocket and drive up. After too much time hunting I finely found what I thought would work, a hub that would need bored out for my axle, and a sprocket that would bolt right to it. So I chucked it up in the lathe and went to town, it fit the axle fine but the holes didn't line up. :( So I had to improvise:
attachment.php

Installed on the axle waiting for the final locating before welding it on to the axle:
attachment.php

(Long term I'm sure I'll need to buy a new axle and hopefully get rid of all of this fiddly **** but I'm trying to get it running for as cheap as possible at this time.

More to come,
JB

Here is the overall view of the engine area, it is pretty close to done until I can mount the cage back on with the gas tank and fuel pump. Next up will be working on the throttle cable, (I think I have that figured out just using the go cart one.) clutch cable, brakes, (I have my fingers crossed on this one) and all of the wiring up front and a place to mount all of that stuff.
attachment.php

Oh you might have noticed the seats don't match. Well it turns out these go cart seats are very similar in size to C4 Corvette seats.
attachment.php

Well now to come clean, some on here have already seen it but here is what I'm hoping to use for the Missouri Gambler 500 the first weekend in April:
attachment.php

The Mo Gambler 500 is a trip in the Ozarks of Missouri where you take cars that aren't meant to go off road and force them to in state or national forests. Along the way you should pick up trash and help other people if you can. It is semi-organized and all came from a group that did this in Oregon a few years ago. Anyway here are a few more photos of the new car:
attachment.php

attachment.php

I managed to get it kinda running and took it for a test drive with Cat and she seemed to approve:
attachment.php

This should be fun, watch this space while I try to get it running better and street legal.

Keep Moving Forward,
JB

JB, just how many projects do you have? I lost count. :headscrat

Me too, I feel like I need to get a few done (haha) and sell them so I can stay above water as I'm drowning in projects right now.

I saw the car on FB. I need that to drive through my yard.

It'll probably just get stuck and make a mess of things. Ya'll getting much rain? :lol_hitti

JB: in case your girls want to drive that cart (or will they know how to start it?) are you building a roll cage cause i'd bet that baby will burn some dirt so to speak?

sorry to hear the cobra engine had an issue and sounds like it might be fixable so best of luck with that.

stay warm!!
