How'd you know about the dog? Gerard is worried I'm going to inspect his paint job next week.

Dan, I want to thank your thread for motivating me to get finished with the lift install.

Nope, I'm not worried. I'll fail the inspection but that's Ok with me. I'm still worrying what ******* paints his garage white? Oh that would be me. LOL. It looks good but man is it hard to keep clean. I have no idea how BOB does it.

Okay, I promised you guys I'd put up some pictures of the new lift going up so here's a couple.

I didn't get a lot pictures of the set up process, but it's a pretty simple install especially after doing the alignment lift.

20160801_160837.jpg

It should be operational before today is over. Down to wiring and adding hydraulic fluid and a few adjustments.

Thank you guys. I've gotten to the point that a third lift was a necessity. I'm too old to be working on the floor anymore. And I know it doesn't sound right but when the other guys were working on the other lifts, I am the kind of boss that worked on the floor instead of having one of them do it. Anyway, now the shop has no more room for anymore lifts, so this is it.

1/2 cup, I understand what you're saying, but if you worked on vehicles all the time like I do, I'd bet you would have a lift and make room for it.

Thanks Terrick, I will.

Lyndon, YOU know it.

CB, I've never been one of those guys that wanted to spend $10,000 for a box to put my tools in. I have many that are under a bench or used to be hanging on the wall. I never could justify spending money on storage. I would rather spend it on the tools. So yes, there's a few CM boxes that serve me well. I can't say that if a good deal came along on some SO or Lista's that I wouldn't go for it, but it'd have to be one awesome deal. I'm just too cheap. And to answer the Post office comment, I have the local contract with them. Gotta love a government job.:bounce:

Thank again guys for stopping by.

Lyndon, it's way in the back of this photo, the USPS van in the shop. I figured Dan was working on them or using it to deliver mail in his spare time.:lol_hitti:lol_hitti

Dan, I don't blame you, I'm cheap that way too. Most of my Vidmars and Lista I bought at a good deal.

The Mac Tech 1000 I bought for $400 off a guy who was selling everything he had to go live full time and cruise on his sailboat. I wasnt even looking.

Thanks Rod. We really need it right now. The shop is inundated with work at this time. Having that third lift should help. But I thought that the second lift would help and all that seemed to do was bring in more work.:willy_nil

That's a good problem to have Dan, especially if it's consistent work (like the UPSS van).

Business must be booming - new truck, new lift...

The lift looks good by the way.

Congrats on your anniversary too, it looks like a nice destination.

Well this is embarrassing... Dan, I clicked the link in your signature line last November when it took me to My Atlas 412A thread. I read the whole two-page thread and apparently didn't subscribe. Now I stumble across a re-named and apparently relocated 24-page thread filled with wonderful stuff.

A few weeks ago I fell in a very deep hole when I went to your profile and clicked on "Find all threads started by dlcwent" and 51 threads popped up. I fell asleep on the keyboard in the pre-dawn hours without getting through even a fraction of them.

I am now subscribed to this one. I have to go back through this thread again because I saw some stuff I wanted to comment on but didn't want to share my confusion before I got to the end. From now on I will be watching you -- from that drone you probably didn't notice....

Thanks Lyndon, I'm better now.

I will post my "boring" projects and let you guys be the judge of their value.

I am excited to get that ceramic wheel working again even though I don't have a real use for it. It's just a neat old stone and I'm sure it will put a very nice edge on a pocket knife.

Thanks for the compliment, I've lived here 20 years now. I'll try and find some old photos of the back yard when we first bought the place. There was no back yard. It was a wet overgrown field. Good thing I cleared it years ago as I don't think I'd have the ambition to do it now.
Dan, your projects are far from boring. Taking that axle out without destroying everything around it was amazing. It was especially amazing that there was no blood trail and no sign of spit or foam -- I would have burst a blood vessel and been flinging spit from the stream of curses long before it came apart.

I really like your place -- it radiates peace and quiet. My brother-in-law is 86 miles up the coast from you on Mt. Desert Island. Haven't been there since 2003 but I do like the area and I'm pretty sure we drove through your neighborhood on one of our outings.

I have some idea of the work it took to create that open space. Behind our tiny yard in Poughkeepsie there was an abandoned farm that was returning to nature. I pushed a rotary mower a few feet into the woods every time I cut the back yard and turned it into a shady area for our two children to play.

So here's a couple of the Jetaway.

After torque converter, valve body, and pump removed.

Here's the torque converter in pieces. First time I've ever seen anything like this.

This is the unit that houses all the clutch discs.

Just calipering the clutch disc. Almost 10 thousandths wear.

Now all I have to do is get it all back together.:headscrat
Dan, in my childhood I took stuff apart and had no trouble putting it back together (most of the time). My confidence carried on into adulthood but the price of the stuff I took apart went up exponentially. I read Hot Rod, Car Craft and Rod & Custom every month and had no trouble taking an engine apart. After doing a complete rebuild on my 454ci Corvette engine and having it run was the icing on the cake.

My job writing technical manuals also led me to believe I could fix anything that came with a manual. Chilton manuals helped but when I acquired the 1972 Chevrolet Service and Overhaul manuals I realized I could tackle more intricate repairs. While the Corvette's engine was at the machine shop I decided to rebuild the Turbo Hydra-Matic 400 Transmission. The instructions were only 55 pages long so I figured why not.

I did a little upgrading of the transmission with better clutches and a shift kit and ended up buying my first Snap-On tools. OK, they are Bluepoint tools but I bought them from the Snap-On truck guy. During re-assembly of the transmission I nicked a seal in the forward clutch and learned there were seal protector tools so I bought the new seal and then bought the seal protector kit. I don't know why but I knew exactly where the box with the tools was located, 33 years after I used them last. The Bluepoint tools came with this instruction sheet:
Bluepoint%20GA-393%20Instructions_zpsbgrrlvxl.jpg

I decided to scan the sheet because it is very brown and very delicate. The seal protectors have a few scratches from their one-time activity but are still in excellent condition. I couldn't find them in the Snap-On catalog so they are probably discontinued.
Bluepoint%20GA-393%20Tools_zpsgdwdhuds.jpg

Dan, if these would be of any use to you, I would be glad to ship them to you. If not, I make the same offer to any other GJ member who would put them to use.

The transmission worked just fine so I'm thinking just about anyone could rebuild an automatic transmission if they follow the instructions. Oh, and you also need to become Mysophobic (afraid of dirt) and repeatedly wash your hands and anything else that comes in contact with the transmission.

Low and reverse clutch went out in my 73 Chevy pickup. We have a great transmission repair and supply in Tulsa, Lester's Gear and Automatic Parts. I went there and bought a manual for about $20, disassembled, then went back and bought about $20 worth of parts (this was in the late 80's) and reassembled the transmission. Worked great. Did not replace the torque converter, too easy to replace later.

Then the Metric transmission went out in my 82 Olds diesel. Since I'm a transmission expert I pulled it out, took it apart, replaced the bad parts, put it in, back out, back in, back out, finally got the little ball to stay in place with grease:willy_nil, back in, now torque converter failed:willy_nil, back out, back in, ran fine and I'm no longer an expert:dunno:. I have not tackled one since. Have not had the need nor the desire.:lol_hitti

Dan, here's another item to hang on you wall. The only female element we could add was to get the Hooters girl to hold up for us.

Well thank you guys so much.

Bob, you owe me no apologies for missing my "slight of hand" trick renaming this thread. It was at the prodding from our Aussie mates that got me to do it. And I want to thank each and everyone of them. I would love to have those transmission seal tools. I'll PM you my address. Thank you in advance.

CB, the Tee shirt will be well received and find a place on "The Wall". Do you think you could get the Hooters girl to personally deliver it?:lol_hitti

1/2 cup, thanks for taking the drivers seat in my absence. I'll be sharing a few pictures shortly.

Mark, (shhhhhhush) Don't tell anyone.:bounce:

Andy, having a transmission fail after a rebuild is something EVERYONE that has rebuilt one has experienced. The key is, keep the percentage very low.

Lyndon, I'm sorry I haven't posted a picture of the last plate and cooler you sent me yet, but I will.

I hope I didn't miss anyone. Oops, Grizz, you're welcome to stop in and use my lift anytime. I know it would be a bit of a drive, but if you are ever down this way, please let me know.
