just exploring options i may not know about. i am going to look at car stereos, now. but the buttons are kind small on those.

Mac made a wide toolbox in the mid 1980s that came with a stereo. It had to have been 54" b/c it fit on top of the KR 560 I bought. The guy I bought it from had the Mac box on top.

is this for home or for the shop? for home i made a drawer on my workbench from the lower dash panel of my 79 camaro. the dash panel is the face of the drawer. it was my car as a teen, so it has sentimental value. it even has the same radio in the panel that i had as a teen. in the drawer is the power supply from a pc to run it and a household amplifier to power the speakers. the head unit doesn't have the umph to drive the household speakers i have hung from the ceiling. eventually i will put a dock in the drawer for my laptop to integrate that into the garage. a monitor on the wall and wireless keyboard/ mouse, then hook the laptop into the stereo for audio, with the laptop safely tucked away in the drawer.

it is for work. i don't have a wall behind my box. so i am going to build something that extends the back of the box higher that the top. and put some kind of shelf on that.

something like this would be great. if only it had all of the controls on the front, it doesn't.

a car head unit work be great. except the buttons are pretty small = fine for a car. but not the greatest, i'm thinking, for a guy with dirty gloves on. and then, i would have to figure out speakers for that.

Jobsite radio. Built to take the abuse and dust. My Bosch hangs easily on large hooks on pegboard. Also has a remote control that's handy when my cell phone rings.

I've got a small portable radio, about 2"x7"x9", runs on AC plugged into a power strip and turns on and off with that. Stuck it on a shelf in a corner, its just loud enough to listen to when I'm not making too much noise, which also makes it quiet enough to play at night when everybody normal is sleeping.

Whats funny is right now my garage has a full set of Klipsch speakers in it, waiting on a bit of refinishing and making space in the livingroom. Find an old set of Klipsch Heresy speakers cheap (around $300/pair used) and see what 96 db efficiency does for ya.

I have a little Milwaukee one that came with a 12v kit. Kinda neat as it'll run on a 12 v battery for hours which is great if youre working away from an outlet. It also sounds pretty good for a little unit. There's an mp3 jack on It as well I believe

Have an old Kenwood receiver and some Bose 201s. Put the Kenwood in an open portion of the kids' tool chest.

I've got a little RCA bookshelf system from Wallyworld that lives on a shelf above my box. Not the greatest sound quality, but for $40 some-odd it doesn't hurt my feelings being in all the dust and crud.

My garage stereo is an old mid/late sixties reviver and it's original speakers. I bought this as my first stereo with Paper boy money. At the time it was pretty big bucks. about 6 years later I bought a nice Sansui Rack mount system, and this one landed in my garage/workshop wherever I lived (It's been in 4 since it was put to that use) (more than one Buddy ragged at me that I had a better stereo in my shop than they had in there house... :bounce:)

The speakers are hung from the rafters, and while this is sacrilege to a Stereo purest, it does give the speakers a straight shot above most of the floor tools, if not the other roof structures.

It will probably get replaced with one of several small Vintage Sansui receivers I've picked up and serviced as well as some decent speakers, although as mentioned, the acoustics out there...

Nothing fancy. Just a Dewalt jobsite radio/battery charger.

dscn3635.jpg

It does have an input for a CD or MP3 player, and I use this feature most of the time so I can listen to "my music", rather that commercials, DJs, etc.

At my previous workshop, I used an old Radio Shack 170W amp, big speakers, etc. The downside is when using power tools, the music either can't be heard, or needs to be turned way up.

I've since started protecting my hearing. So the small jobsite radio works fine in a quiet shop. When operating noisy tools, or lawn equipment, I grab the Peltor radio headset. I'm sure I look stylish, but these do work very well.

You will not find a better set of speakers in this price range. I just plug in my ipod or android with slacker radio and jam out. If I need to listen to local stations, I switch to I heart radio app, but local stations **** for the most part.

Absolutely. Great sound from those.

I have the 4.2 set. Was using those and decided to put them in my garage radio...then the wife kidnapped it and claimed it for the dining room. :lol_hitti

If you want something roughly car-stereo sized, go look for an older American stereo from a late eighties to late nineties vehicle. American radios are much bigger than Japanese (which are generally the size that aftermarket radios are) and have bigger buttons and displays. They're still small enough to fit into the position of many toolbox drawers.

Kenwood used to make a Chrysler-sized aftermarket CD player for a car, but I don't know if they still do or not.

The only thing to keep in mind is that the impedance is generally 4ohm in a car, while 8ohm in a bookshelf or home audio setup, so you'll need speakers capable of handling the correct impedance to avoid having the amplifier fry.

You got a little convoluted there.

Speakers provide the impedance.

The amplifier should be capable of handling the impedance of the speakers.

I ended up with an under the cabinet radio/cd player made for kitchen cabinets from Sony. I knew we wouldn't use it in the kitchen and I hated for it to just sit there in storage when I needed one in the garage. Mounted it underneath a shelf and it sounds pretty good and takes no space up.

Ugh, I have those. When the sub worked they sounded great, which wasn't long, Got it repaired by Klipsch, sounded great, same thing again. Never again.

They also have set that very similar to these in the $70 price range. Are you sure you had the THX cert set? Either way Ive been rocking mine with absolutely zero issues for at least a year now. you win some, you loose some I guess.:pimpflash My only complaint with them is that they dont have a power switch

I also have a dewalt jobsite radio I take with me out into the yard. Im estimating the battery that keeps the stations set last me about a year or so. It gets pretty good reception and has survived a few things falling onto it. I love the fact that it will either charge my batteries or run the radio.

When I used to work at the junk yard (best job ever), during crushing season we all ran Front End Loaders moving cars to/from the crushers and trucks.

Being on that thing with no music was brutal, so I rigged up my own system, however, probably not the most tool box efficient.

I duct taped a car radio to a car battery and stuck a speaker (using its magnet) to the top of it. Wired it up and had a portable (though very heavy) boom box for nothing.

Just thought I'd throw the advice out there for any fellow rednecks with no pride in the appearance of their stereo.

Eh, okay, how about "speakers providing the correct impedance"?

Yes, I was not technically correct, but I think that matching the numbers on the little stickers on the backs of the devices would suffice...
