Been meaning to ask since I noticed this the other week. Brother gave me a few old spanners some weeks ago, and one of them is a Gedore, (bottom one in the photo).

Since when have they been producing stuff in India?

Lots of great stuff in there, and so clean! You've prompted me to clean my shitstained toolbox this weekend :)

I thought I had too many strippers :)

I've seen a fair bit of the Indian stuff over my side of the Atlantic, hardly any of the German stuff apart from pipe wrenches though.

I will say in general the Indian gedore I've seen is among the very worst looking tools I've seen

I clean and polish tool after every use, and being hobbyist/DIYer they don't see much use anyways :). Different wire strippers for different wire gauge/thicknesses. Can't have too many.

Nowt wrong with looking after ones tools. They cost money, so looking after stuff means you aren't replacing unnecessarily. I get earache from the tool animals I work with because I like to look after my tools. Gradually teaching them to show at least some consideration for them though. :D I always look at it this way: I treat my own and others tools with respect, so I expect the same in return. It's not a big ask. People take the piss no end over it though.

You're not a fan of them then. :D Not checked on the quality as yet. Was just surprised to see India stamped on there.

They were apparently pretty common in North America during the '80s, everyone seems to agree they were of horrendous quality. Quite a few Americans seem to still believe Gedore is a trashy brand because of it :)

I agree with the wire strippers, I will post some pictures of mine later on. I do clean my stuff, but overall, everything still manages to get gunky and yucky:eek:

Belofte maakt schuld...

I'm sure I'm not the only one who dislikes manual wire strippers or butchering up their fingers and cables with a knife. So here's my modest collection:
Coaxial/telecom stuff:
29226011gl.jpg

The 4th ***** balls, but anyway.

Electrical: The dinky red and yellow pliers I've had since I was 10 (that's when it all began :p), Jokari Sekura 28H, Weidmuller Stripax, Weidmuller Stripax 16, Gedore 8099-1, Knipex 12 11 180 (like the stripmasters),
29226012jg.jpg

The 2 Weidmuellers I got sometime ago secondhand; €15 for the pair :rocker:
29226013ev.jpg

29226014bf.jpg

They've got some interesting features you don't see on other stripping pliers. The orange handle covers come off for smaller hands, the wire cutter can be closed off for repeated stripping without accidentally cutting into neighbouring wires and there's the facility to leave the insulation on stranded wires when stripping so they don't unravel before you fit them with ferrules. Useful for serial work e.g. when wiring up a cabinet.

Definitely not! I'd pick the cheapest chinesium money can buy over them.

Most people I know over here think of gedore as rock bottom low quality because of it.
About the only people I've found here who like them (and aren't German tool collectors) are people who have only used the German pipe wrenches. Seems they were the only quality gedore sold here.

Stahlwille is totally non existent, never seen it anywhere.

Hazet is around but uncommon, and is treasured like gem stones by people over here. Seems to be considered a step up from snap on.

Those knipex strippers look identical to the Swiss made Klein katapult strippers. If they work even half as well as the Klein's, they'd be hard to beat

Modest collection?? Very nice indeed, I like them Weidmuellers, and nice score. Being constructed entirely of plastic, how are they holding up? I was looking at the Knipex version the other day, but it felt flimsy, so I put it back.

I also have the Gedore VDE 8099 - 160 H, similar to the one with blue handles pictured above, which I have no clue how to use :D

And by now, you have the best garden in the world. Pictures please.
 i wish....but unfortunately not :) I only do the garden work for several neighbours...

I'd love to know why Bosch don't make a dual, independent charger, as others do though. Be simpler than having to get multiple, single chargers.
They´re a bit slow :)
iirc i read in the Bosch forum that they´ll make dual chargers soon....but for 12 volt and 18 volt... at least something.... :)

nice tool (-box) collection !

Since when have they been producing stuff in India?

from 1961 to 1986.
They also produce in Brazil and South Africa and other countries.

btw. cable/wire strippers... Jokari Super No.15

I'm getting the feeling there's not much love for the Indian Gedore gear. :D

I think they've already brought those out. Even they're not independent chargers though. They only charge one battery at a time, on a first come first served basis, judging from what I read.

Didn't wanna go with my criticism as far as you did, but i agree. As i said, don't even know how to use it. Could be me though. What's your take on it? Oh, and it is not cheap either.

Sorry to **** in, however I must concur with the previous assessment of Geodore's Indian-manufactured quality (or lack thereof) back in the 1980's I bought a cheap set of their metric combination wrenches in a roll from MSC (formerly Manhattan Supply Company) to keep next to some metric equipment we had in my shop. Finish was slightly better than crude, fit was somewhat sloppy and they were mostly used as a last resort by the employees. Probably the most telling aspect of their poor quality was when I sold the shop some 20 years later, every single wrench was still there. Not one had been lost or stolen. I can't say that about any other hand tool or set in the shop.

I've heard the south African gedore is quite high quality, anyone have experience with it?

Sent from my MotoG3 using Tapatalk

Only the hardline tools (wrenches, sockets, etc) are produced here. All of the rest (pliers, automotive speciality tools, impact stuff, torque tools, etc) are imported from Austria/Germany.

I would rate the local products as top quality. Maybe not the best of the best, but they survive in the mining and other industries daily here.

Mine says made in Germany on the handle, with Austria laser etched on the head.

Where in Western Canada did you purchase them from?

Anybody heard of SpeeDrill from France? This is a E-torx plus socket:

What does a Bentley Flying Spur provide for on-board tools?

Some bland looking Felo screwdriver

They were used, from a Craigslist seller who I buy a huge amount of stuff from. He puts aside anything German for me. I'd guess they're at least 30 years old. I like them almost as much as my hazets, and that's saying something

I've head some complain about the quality of their recent product. Their old products are quite good though.

This riveter is only thing I have from Elora. Paid "Made in Germany" price for it, but it Doesn't say anything on it, not even "Germany", I am sure its made in China or Taiwan just like most of their stuff I believe.

Unfortunate to hear they went down in quality.... The stuff I've got is definitely hazet/snapon equivalent.
Generally the only new hand tools I buy are proto and knipex. But I've been very tempted to replace my assorted set of wrenches (all good stuff, but not matching) with a set of new hazet. Hard to justify though...

You might wanna take a look at Gedore, in my opinion they are just as good as my Hazet but a bit cheaper, not by much though.

I've considered them, and stahlwille. There is just something I really like about hazet tools, and close to half of my current set is older hazet. I really like the feel of their wrenches, even more than my mac and snapon

Solid tools. Unfortunately a bit underrepresented.
Available in NA here: http://www.bloomertool.com/

Should suit my tool cart needs nicely.
