Tools from the old world

I recently cleared out a box of old tools I inherited, I thought it just a few sockets in so was surprised to find some more interesting tools. Most of the tools were England or Germany, with a splash of USA, which is a good demonstration of where tools used to be made - these came from my grandfather’s shop who wouldn’t have spent a penny more than he needed to, he definitely wasn’t shopping by coo.

‘Mole’ grips - this is how people in the UK refer to vice grips - I hadn’t seen actual Mole branded ones before.

Vauxhall adjustable wrench (that’s clearly seen a lot of use) - anyone know if this would have been supplied as part of a toolkit with a Vauxhall car, or if it was an unrelated brand?

Record stilson - I’ve only seen record vices, hadn’t realised they also made these.

‘Nino’ wrench - not heard of this company before.

There was also a complete set of Bedford open ended wrench’s, and a couple of strange shape Britool wrench’s (1012 and 1074). Both of these are 11/16 af, I would guess the U shape is for access to a distributor or exhaust studs. I’m guessing my grandfather had a really bad day with these, to own two specialist wrench’s in the same size.

Any idea of ages of this lot?

Another Britool 11/16" cylinder head crowsfoot, suits Vauxhall models according to my 'bible'. Has grind marks.
A couple of NOS VL Churchill 3/4" AF.
Britool 3 in 1 socket spanner.

Nubo is the trade mark of Gerald Stains from London.

They were motor factors for all garage equipment they sold.

Tools and equipment were sourced Worldwide.

Some made-in-Italy Freud carbide router bits from Amazon: 3/16" and 5/16" rounding over bits with 1/4" shank. And a 15/32" mortising bit, with 1/2" shank. The mortising bit was the big bargain in this group, at only $6. It typically sells for at least 3x that price.

Sortimo has a similar color scheme for their T-Boxx organizer bins: red is 1x1 unit, yellow is 1x2 units, blue is 2x2 units. Do you know if they are interchangeable with Allit and whatever brand this is? Is there some sort of euro standard at work here that I don’t know about as a foreigner (like the A paper sizes)? Thanks!

"Allit" + "Küpper" use a 54x54mm system, "Auer" + "Sortimo" use a 52x52mm system, "Tanos/Festool" use 50x50mm so they´re not 100% compatible.
Maybe measure the size of your drawer and then choose which fits best.
I have Allit/Küpper in 2 drawers and Auer in 2 drawers for example.
Auer let you choose the color of your boxes so you can have everything in the same color or the color system of others (1x1 = red etc.)

Really tempted by these (180mm size). Are they much easier to adjust compared to Knipex?

Yes, they are much easier to adjust, especially if you are trying to do it with one hand. The Hazet appears to have a slightly larger opening, too.

I don't have the 180mm, but it should be similar to the 150mm shown below. For those in the EU the least expensive way to get the 150mm might be to buy the 2024 Hazet Advent Calendar, 37 Euros. That used to be a good option for the US, but the abrupt termination of the de minimis tariff exemption makes it prohibitively expensive now.

Any remarks about the Hazet, on the topics covered within?

That's a tough question - I think all this largely boils down to personal preference. I've got a number of different plier-wrenches, from Knipex, Hazet, Klein, Craftsman (Facom), and Carlyle (Fujiya). All of these are say 95% similar; the differences are small. Some of these are in different tool kits in different locations - see pic below for an example.

In my main box in the garage I have 3 10" pairs - Klein, Craftsman, and Knipex. The Klein has a nice adjuster (like the Hazet), but it is otherwise clunky and a bit heavy. It's my go-to when I'm working outside in the dirt or on something rusty. The Craftsman (made by Facom) has become my all-round favorite. It's noticeably stiffer than the others, somewhat heavy, and has a nice large adjuster button. The Knipex still sees a lot of use, but it now has nylon jaw covers attached for delicate tasks. I also have smaller and larger sizes of Knipex in that box. Yes, I have a problem, and can't resist picking up pliers-wrenches whenever I see them at a good price!

The 6" Hazet (762-15) will possibly end up in my snowmachine kit as they are easier to adjust with gloves on than the Knipex. But I'd rather have the larger 762-18 and will be keeping my eyes open for a deal.

Speaking of good prices, the Craftsman have been closed out but are still available on ebay.

Has anyone tried to order any tools from Europe with any luck in the past few weeks?

I assume you're asking from the US, but for the UK, since a couple of years back after political events, pretty much none of the EU suppliers ship here anymore. Without competition to domestic sellers, prices are inflated, and availability of anything off mainstream (brands or specific tools) is often difficult or none.

If you’re not getting goods from Germany, that is most likely because DHL halted all commercial shipments to the US. The only shipments they accept are of private nature, marked as gift & must include invoice/ documentation to proof value does not exceed 100,- USD (EUR 85,-) - and it is indeed a private shipment.

From a commercial seller’s point of view, that is completely unacceptable for legal/ tax reasons.

The only option for commercial shipments & general shipments of goods exceeding a value of 100,- USD is to use either DHL Express (different branch) or one of the other logistics companies. Which comes at significantly higher costs.

Since I’m out of the game of international shipping and closed my accounts years ago, I can’t do a test run to see what the actual cost and even more importantly the actual terms for shipping & handling of import fees are right now.

It will take a while for logistics companies as well as “mainstream” commercial sellers (B2C) to sort it for them and adapt to the new regulations and resume operation/ shipping to the US or maybe even scrap it completely, either for the time being or in general - all depending on what their individual short/long view is.

(B2B is obviously an entirely different story.)

Kind regards,
Olli

There appears to be a $100 tariff free category in the US system. The tariff structure has been a bit confusing and not very stable this year. For me it’s eliminating some of my consumption of goods, which on a personal level is long overdue. Not sure reduced demand is a good thing overall.

Can you please share details on whom is selling the 2024 advent calendar for 37 Euros?
Thanks.
The day that I posted that was the price on amazon.de. Unfortunately it looks like it has gone up to 79.75E now. :-(
I got mine in June from amazon.com for $50.44; it was shipped from Germany and took 3 weeks to arrive (to USA). It's now $97.85 there.

Thank you so much. I’m pretty deep into the Sortimo T-Boxx and L-Boxx ecosystem so I will stay there but good to know what brands are different sizes so I don’t bother. Thank you for all the euro tool information you’ve shared over the years.

bit of a win on ebay (uk). got both of these for a third of retail as the cases were broken - not an issue as they'll go straight in my toolbox anyway and yes, I know the 1/2 drive set image is ****

Those are good deals.

I have to say, that I’m not convinced the plastic boxes are particularly worth having anyway.

If they can’t even survive postage, that rather confirms it!

Anyone other than Halder make one-piece dead blow hammers?

Plenty doing only the type with metal body and interchangeable heads - Gedore, Picard, PB Swiss, Hazet, Stahlwille.

Facom ones appear to be made by Halder. Nothing wrong with either.
Hultafors as usual doesn't say anything so assume not Europe.

Primarily most of my plumbing pipe cutters, wrenches are Ridgid

However, I gotta say, my smaller pipe cutter & larger ratcheting PVC from Rothenberg but far are my favorites

May it be known, that I've gone back the last 10 years in this thread.

2016 starts on page 593, so that's just under 300 pages. Couple of pages every few days. Worth it!
Most of my new tool arrivals the past few months I've just been posting in the arrivals thread to avoid double-posting and spamming the whole place.

In the spirit of giving back by continuing this thread, should I just repost here in one big batch?
