I've also ordered a floorjack, as Facom's were not on sale anymore (it was 3 years that they've continuously been...) I've decided to buy it from the UK. I think that god doesn't want me to have a jack, I received an e-mail this morning from Abco telling me they they sold their last Mega T2X last week and they'll receive the new ones in 6 weeks... I'll wait...

By the way here are the pics of my small CNC router, made in Belgium! Well it's not a very high quality machine, Colinbus really tried to save money everywhere but it's basically made to mill PCB's so... I'm still happy, with some modifications it's a good first try in the CNC world, an home-made one is under study

My mum asked me to buy a bench grinder, basically to sharpen her gardening tools, lawn mower blades,... or more precisely to have me do it.
As I killed our old chinese bench grinder (150W) last week grinding some stainless steel, I would like something more robust...
She want to spend around 100-150€, I was thinking about an Optimum 200mm (single phase 220v 600W), which I suppose is made in China, I've seen them in real, it's ok but not impressive.

I've seen that you have a bosch GSM200 (D I think), do you like it? why did you take a 3 phases? whould you buy something else?

I'm willing to put some extra money (100€) to buy a "good" quality bench grinder, as I will use it much more than she will. I was wondering if it's better to buy the less powerful GSM200D (three phase 550w) or the "regular" GSM200 (single phase 700w). I have single phase sockets everywhere but only one three phases, I will have to install a new line and socket if it's a three-phases so I would prefer to do it only if it has a real advantage.
Are there other good bench grinder in this price range (200-250€), I'm looking for a 200mm, or even 150mm if it's well made... I'm not so sure about 175mm, wheel offer seem narrower...

Those five brands are all very good, but there are others that make tools that are just as good or better depending on the particular tool. Read more on this forum and you will see there are many varied opinions on who makes the best tools. Oh, and welcome to GarageJournal.

Depends on what is "the best" ? There are companies who only make specific products like pliers or screwdrivers so i wouldn´t generally say that a company is "the best" because there might be a company who makes a better product like PB Swiss Tools for example

Do you want a new one ? If not you could look for old industrial type machines from "AEG" "Rema", "Greif", "Flott" etc.
Scantool/KEF also make nice ones (in Sweden + Denmark AFAIK). There is also "Creusen" www.creusen.nl from Holland as well as "Kräku" from Germany www.kraeku.de and Nebes from Italy www.nebes.it as well as Metabo

I personally (like you already might know ) prefer "made in EU" or even better Germany and i also don´t want to have some brands in my shop like "Optimum" and "Quantum" D) that doesn´t mean that they´re bad, i just don´t like them

So since i wanted a new product i choosed the Bosch "GSM 200 D" because i got a good price (under 200.-) so it was cheaper than the Metabos and easy to get. So i don´t know how the 700 Watt 240 Volt version compares to the 550 Watt 440 Volt 3-phase version but a 3-phase motor should last much longer (basically only the bearings wear i read, there are also no brushes)
, it usually have more torque , more silent, it is better for "overload" and also the output power is the interesting number not the "input" power.
So I wanted 3 phase (everything else is for kids )
I`m happy with mine, i don´t know which size to get though, garden tools are quite big so you need a big grinding wheel i think ?? Maybe 200mm or larger ?? For sharpening drill bits and TIG electrodes etc. a 150mm or 175mm grinder probably will work. I wanted a wide wheel and a large wire wheel so i has to take the 200mm version (and i wanted 440 volt) so i can grind metal and deburr metal pieces after sawing/cutting so for me the 200mm size is good. The machine don´t bog down so the power seems to be enough (if you stick a piece of metal too far into the wire wheel it bogs down though).Another simple reason i like my Bosch is the on/off switch. Push button switches are sometimes difficult to push since i always wear welder gloves (the thick ones with leather/wool double layer). Another reason is the workpiece support, many or most machines come with a flimsy "L"-shaped metal piece. Bosch at least has a "U" shaped piece of metal which looks a
little bit better, not as good as the pictured "KEF" or "Rema" version of course. But these cost even more...
My favourites are "Greif" and "Rema" though

Actually I bought the PH3 chisel screwdriver separately to complete the set.
Concerning the stubbies, I had to wait about a month to get them as the ebay seller didn't have all of them in stock and had to order some, it would explain the logo difference.

Thanks for the infos, I laso like the piece support on the Bosch, it doesn't look as strong as on older bench grinder but I guess they did something robust enough. It's a pitty that new bench grinders mostly have a tiny piece support, usually a small L shape fixed only on one side. Even my old "no-name" has a large support, fixed on both sides of the wheel guard (which is made of thick steel), no vibration at all (well, not from the support ).

I'd prefer to go for a new one, I sometime look for used ones here in Belgium but I've never seen anything interresting. As I have to study for my exams now, I can't go in Germany for a tool trip

Also, as the boss (mum) allowed the money for a bench grinder I prefer not to wait and buy it right now, before she convinces me to sharpen her gardening tool with an angle grinder and don't see how usefull a bench grinder is anymore
I also have to make her buy a bunch of powertools in february, for the springbrake jobs she asked me to do, so I always try to keep her "monthly tool budget" as regular as possible.


I will go for the Bosch GSM200D, I like the size, easy to get special wheels at an affordable price. It's something I'm a bit scared with a nice second hand 400mm Greif, the price of a few different wheels of good quality
The GSM200D is at 200€ incl. delivery to Belgium, it's a fair price I think...

Do you know if it can be wired in 230v (3 phases of course...), if not I will have to install my transformer in my old garage, I would have liked to wait the new garage in june to install it in a clean/dry place...

Made in Germany the synonym of quality here . This helps me to sell Gedore good enough for my town. Even considering it expensive cost compare to russian tools or chineMatrix.
About german power tools: i can't say for all Russia, but in my town I don't see Kress or Prokressiv brands, only Bosch. Internet says, that Prokressiv brand made in China for all the world, not only for Russia (as they early wanted to do). "Prokressiv" replaced grey-blue home-using line of "Kress" tools. But Bosch is another story - it's very common here. Here names of power tool brands which I saw in shops of my town, as popularity order:
Bosch - both Green and Blue, made in Malaysia, PRC, Switzerland and even in Russia.
Interskol – made in PRC, Russia, Italy (Felisatti) & Spain (Freud).
Makita
Hitachi
Sparky, DWT, Zubr(Russian), Progress(not Prokressiv, Russia)

Gedore can't be find in shops, we work directly with firms. I live in oil&gas region, and 90% of my clients is oil&gas companies. Only 2-3 persons per year buy Gedore tools for home uses.

In germany at least i couldn´t find any bench grinder with a good workpiece support under 200.- ...Bosch is the "one eyed" among the blind in this case ... Maybe make your own ? Or "transfer" the one from your "no-name" tool to the Bosch ?

uh oh buy the bench grinder quick before someone tells her that she also could use a angle grinder with a flap wheel or sanding disc like the rest of the world do What else power tools do she "need" ??

I think 200.- is a fair price, found it in a shop in Holland for like 196.- (but plus s+h) so i think it´s ok ! It depends of course how many wheels you need/want.... On the Bosch grinder i have a wire wheel and a Grit 36 wheel for coarse grinding and deburring, on the 125mm Elektra Beckum grinder i have a Grit 80 (iirc) silicium carbide wheel for TIG electrodes and a Grit 60 wheel (iirc). I´ve to check what i need to resharpen HSS drill bits and will add the wheel to the Elektra grinder.

I don´t know about the wiring - there are some 3-ph motors which can be wired to 230V - they usually have a badge on the motor "230V/380V" or something like this but i don´t know in this case. I have to check the german forum there it once was discussed.

I don´t know, every country has their own "top" company i think. You also could look for old "Belzer" tools from germany which once was a top notch brand with very good pliers and screwdrivers and other tools - the "Snap-On" of Germany. (old "Dowidat" tools were also good)

yeah found one ! It´s made out of 2 "H"-beam steel pieces welded together and with flat steel to "cap" the open profile. The base is made out of a transport bracket for a outboard motor/engine of a boat Everything for free added a little bit "bondo" now i only have to find a matching color

They have short list of powertool production, cheap prices, awful marketing/distributing/delivery, service only in Izhevsk, good quality, bad ergonomic, minimum innovations, simple construction, no design, high endurance and no feedback (manufacturer-customer). All good & bad sides of old-USSR school of tool making. Fckng nostalgia. Obviously their weapons is better than power tools, but cheap prices and good quality pushing me two days ago to order one E-113A rotary hammer for home. *click* I think it would take a week or two to consider my request

I’m talking about complex catalog “Werkzeuge 14”. We print “Gedore-edition” Wollschläger catalog for Russia by removing other brands instead of Wollschläger line (Primat, Wodex etc.) and adding almost all Gedore lines into it. Power tools also included.

Was in True Value over in Ohio and they had a display model of the Fein that I got to handle. I think it was around $400 including tax for the top of the line model. Got this free DVD I'll watch later.
