Well I did just order a 7" Knipex locking plier yesterday.. it'll be here Thursday so hopefully it's as shiny as it looks in the stock photo. I honestly think those designs are wonky as heck! Functional, but wonky. :D

Also, picked up a Beta 1/2" hex key for like.. $1.80 off Amazon. Last one they had :) That's pretty cheap for a 1/2? key, right?

Annnnnd a PB Swiss multicraft driver just to see how the handle is / Erem needle point tweezers for metal splinters.

a small road find for the day, pair of Würth 714 07 38 cuttin' pliers:

2013-07-23-1293.jpg

not in a great cutting shape sadly as can be seen with the two shinny spots on the top blade where somebody used them to, most probably, cut some steel wire or nails:

2013-07-23-1294.jpg

2013-07-23-1295.jpg

2013-07-23-1296.jpg

anyway, they're nice and comfy(especially the grips, a bit like those on my Hozan pliers) and should still be useful for cutting small copper wires and aluminium foil from time to time.

If the blades aren't too badly nicked (don't look too bad to me in the photos, but I could be wrong), it's possible a resharpening company could regrind them to useful condition (it will change a tad; ask for "full profile grind" if you want to be able to cut from tip to joint, otherwise you may get a gap near the joint when fully closed). Less expensive than new cutters (good ones anyway ;)).

Just a thought.

Has anyone used this Facom 1/2" SL.161PB ratchet?

Picture

Is it any good?

What are the specs? Some say it has 50, some say it has 72 teeth. Is it made by Gemonio in Italy? Facom answered none of my mails .
It's less than 30 Euros.

Yes I have one. not used it a great deal but it's well made and comfortable to hold. I was under the impression it was from Taiwan?

72 teeth. The head is "sealed for life" so no taking it apart and greasing it!

It's less than 30 Euros.

Reason for the two different tooth counts that people say, is because the former Facom Pearhead ratchets, their "Parking Meter" series, had a tooth count of 50, and they resemble these newer Facom Pearheads a lot, which has a tooth count of 72.

When I say that they look a like, they actually really don't.

there's a small crack that is 0.8 to 1.0mm long and i'm not sure if it's worth it instead of using it as is(or as a back-up) and getting a nice 3peaks one for working with...

sm-1.jpg

beside, a road find is a road find so no money changed hands and i already planned to buy a 3peaks. :D

Free is always good. Didn't see a crack in photo though (do see what looks like a small scratch, and if that's it, didn't think anything of it). So it looked like a small bit of cash to return them to near new condition.

Not familiar with that particular brand of cutter, but it looks nice in the photo. :) Being Japanese, I'd presume the metallurgy to be decent (durable & hold an edge for years if not abused).

All of my cutters are a mixed bag from Swanstrom, Erem, Lindstrom, or Tronex (rebranded as Excelta). Got all of them half off or less on eBay, so I saved quite a bit of money. My electronics pliers are all from Schmitz in Germany (top notch & excellent value IMHO - they have an online store if you need any and take PayPal). Might be worth a look if you need any.

If tools from Italy count here is my addition to the thread. 2 Usag ratchets and a Usag T-handle with a Usag extension all found at the same pawnshop.

well, a small bit of cash but lots of time to find a local firm that can do a good job of it and even then with the crack i'm not sure that would be better than using what's still usable of the original edge. :headscrat

i wouldn't be surprised that one of those made it for Würth though... maybe Monte will chime in with his vast knowledge of brands and tool subcontracting... :)
those Swanstrom are new to me and i should be adding one to the list soon. or shouldn't but will... :spit:

I think the black NWS pliers are prettier than the chrome ones

Got some new tools from Ko-ken:

1/2" 4750P ratchet, 30 teeth

First day and I love it!

8866A 1" to 3/4" adaptor. For comparison with the PK2346/6 set

4750 1/2" t handle. For comparison with 3/8" 3750 and 3/4" 6750

3/8" and 1/2" have the ability to lock the head in the middle.

The 4750 is pretty new. They now stamp the size (300mm) on them.

Other tools including Z-series stuff.

True.

But it's worth looking into for cutters that cost $50 - 100 per new IMHO (they can get crazy; some are over $200 <fibre optic & medical cutters> :shocking:) assuming they're not broken or worn out at that point. Definitely less expensive anyway.... ;)

it looks niftily purty and, maybe, is even better than that! :D
Hope so. :) Either way, you'll find out ... :rocker:

i wouldn't be surprised that one of those made it for Würth though... maybe Monte will chime in with his vast knowledge of brands and tool subcontracting... :)
They don't remind me of any of the brands I listed, but I could be wrong. :headscrat

those Swanstrom are new to me and i should be adding one to the list soon. or shouldn't but will... :spit:
They're quite good, and excellent value (slightly less expensive than their Euro counterparts; say ~$10 per pair). Not the absolute best perhaps, but close if the size will work (theirs tend to be a bit larger then their competitors for the same wire gauge ratings = can be a problem in tight quarters).

Person that started the company was the individual that sold Diamond Tool & Horseshoe to Cooper Industries back in the '80's (green handled Xcelites are the old Diamalloy cutters & pliers).

FWIW, Lindstrom used to be the best when they were still made in Sweden, but that's since changed (Sandvik moved manufacturing to Spain, then sold it to SNA Europe). Red handled Snap on's are Lindstroms with red handles.

Tronex are top notch (the best available ATM IMHO; I even prefer these to Erem), and you might want to give them a look as well. Not sure what either these or Swanstroms would go for in EU though, so Schmitz will probably be the best value of all (they make great cutters as well from what I understand, I just didn't need any when I ordered my pliers).

With the exception of Excelta, they each actually manufacture most or all of their own cutters and pliers (Lindstrom does import one line from Ideal-tek, which makes amazing tweezers). Unless it's a bargain, I don't touch their products (top notch stuff is way overpriced after their markup, and the rest is really cheap junk).

Monte, is there a good source for NOS Knipex pliers and the like? Those handles... :)

Also, they're stamped. A beautiful thing, for sure.

Cosmik, your "editing reasons" always make me giggle :D

pictures!

Got this stuff pretty cheap.. MSRP for the Knipex only, the 1/2 Beta allen key was $1 and change, the PB Swiss driver was 3 I think! Don't mind the laptop :)

Do we not get a peek inside? :dunno: :D

Here you go:

v62ank.jpg

Also got these Unior 165 reversible ratcheting box spanners, made in Taiwan no doubt. They were pretty cheap and more importantly I liked the 8x10 and 12x14 size combination which seem rather unusual ones for a European brand to carry. They needed a clean-up and lubing with RLL first though.
