I've been looking to replace my - now ageing - Facom 40 spanners with something that is equally relatively short and having comparatively thin open ends.
I have a mis-match of 4 generations from sets and individuals I bought over the years, but a few sizes have "disappeared" over the years and since they're now discontinued ...

So I stumbled on this set: Carl Walter 280 PH, 5.5-22, 24, 27, 30, 32 and 34.

They are a tad shorter in the smaller sizes, and a bit longer in the larger ones. Open end thickness is virtually the same.
Just need to find a 36 now, and hopefully it wont cost more than the 29 quid these cost me.

They are, they feel well balanced and are very well finished - though they're obviously not mirror polished chrome. The only drawback is that the size markings are harder to read, but nothing a bit of tyre chalk can't mend.
At €39.99 (£29.00 - $45.00) for a set of well made German spanners they're pretty good value. All sizes have a flank drive style ring end which Carl Walter calls "Energy-profil".

Also picked up this set of hex keys, AMF. Not seen this brand before. re-branded or own manufacture?

What do you polish ? Stainless ? Alu ?

Steel and Aluminium. Current small project is one of my (now 4) Tough drill presses.
All the handles and bare steel bits to polish before a final coat of Renaissance Wax. The castings have been stripped (tanked or blasted) and painted. Old school, the round knobs are all lead.

Aluminium/alloy is usually restricted to an Alfa Romeo bits (1967 AR Guilia Sprint GT Veloce), cam covers, timing cover, sump, bell housing, gearbox, brake slave cylinder...

Bought a set of precision tools from the army:

Several tools of Belzer (feeler gauges, 3 tweezers), Eclipse Sheffield England (micro screwdriver set), mirror of Ulmann (USA), smaller mirror of Martin Germany, Ruler of G.Rabone & sons (England), scissor clamps (unknown brand) and chirurgical blade holder (vanderkuip; dutch brand).

Here are some unknown or more special items:

A) CK Tools wire stripper (new about €50,-)

http://www.element14.com/community/docs/DOC-20468/l/ck-precision-wire-strippers--simplify-your-work

B) What is this? Brand: DESCO.

Found it: wire spoon

C) What is this? Brand?

Found it: Military relay extraction tool :pimpflash
http://www.skygeek.com/military-standard-m6106-32-001-relay-removal-tool.html

D) What is this? Proto, USA.

Found it: A screw starter..? It has a spring that can be tensioned, so I think it can hold a slotted head screw?

Do you get a mirror like shine if you polish aluminium parts ?

I tried that yesterday and it worked fine. It holds the slotted screw very tight. Sadly the slotted screws are not used much anymore (philips or even torx).

Years ago, every mechanic had one or more. We used them for changing breaker points without dropping screws in the distributor. There are also versions for phillips head screws.

Monte, my German is not the best, is this new 12V series made in Germany?
Fein didn´t answer my question. Maybe tomorrow.... but i guess that the expensive 4-speed model will be german made, the 12 volt multimaster too but the other tools are probably imported (?). Maybe made by TTI like the 18 volt tools.

I aim for beyond satin. But with the right compound and buff I would expect a 'mirror' finish would be obtainable.
Do you only change the polishing compounds during the polishing steps or do you use harder/softer mops for each compound too ?

Never thought I would post! More of a lurker ;)

Thanks to all of the awesome contributors for showing your tools and sharing your knowledge. I've been reading the thread for a year now, but felt like I had to go back and start at the beginning… page 230 and it's taking too long!

I'll let people guess what I do  Not really a garage but we have a fair amount of mechanical stuff to work on

Hopefully the pictures come through all right. I'm sure I messed it up. Maybe I made them too small but I was just trying to follow the rules. These pictures are of the box I've put together for my co-workers (excuse the Craftsman - it was lying around at work!).

Some slotted nut wrenches in stainless along with the odds and ends. Pretty sure Kieselmann is the manufacture for these wrenches.
IMG_1634.JPG

Wrench drawer in the most common used sizes at work. Elora and Projahn. I forgot to order the 27mm!
IMG_0944.JPG

Closer up of the Elora 200 stainless series.
IMG_1636.JPG

Comparison of some deep offset Elora and Projahn. The resemblance is clear. If I had to guess, Elora is the OEM for Projahn wrenches. Maybe Monte or someone knows for sure?
IMG_1638.JPG

Stainless Wera drivers - flat, phillips and hex l-keys. Knipex tube cutter (lots of pneumatic lines and tubes), cobra and plier wrench, some small circlip pliers, and a specialty tool.
IMG_1639.JPG

Projahn socket set. 72 teeth in 1/4, 3/8 1/2. No idea on the OEM for these, but the finish on the sockets is pretty good and the ratchets feel smooth. Most likely made far east.
IMG_1640.JPG

Enjoy :p Maybe I'll post more pictures of the facility (luckily no trade secrets) and the stuff we get to work on. It might be made in the U.S.A and assembled with imported materials (and labor)… but everything came from Europe and the labor was all German

Makita track saw, made in the UK.

Decided to sell my own Festool TS55 REQ and get this instead. Doesn't hurt that I put $200 in my pocket on the deal.

Cut quality seems on par, but has a couple improvements (scoring mode, anti-tip rails, better motor control + more power) that really makes this saw legitimately better, $200 cheaper or not.

Though Festool created the tracksaw market (I think?), they've really lost their edge (with the Makita being a great bargain, and Mafell making even greater improvements than what Makita has done).

Newest addition to the Bosch collection.

2015_08_29_12_38_37.jpg

Nice, I love Bosch's new sanders.

I have some Festool as well, but Bosch is making a really good case for itself. All their high end sanders are made really nicely, all made in Switzerland, and at less than half the price of what Festool wants. I haven't tried the new ones w/ the decoupled housings, but I have their old detail sander and it's the best detail sander I've used.
