Agreed.

I like waterstones but they are simply not practical when camping which is when I revert to a spyderco sharpmaker if I have a vehicle or a falkniven dc4 diamond ceramic stone when on foot.

I have seen excellent results achieved with a tile And varying grits of sandpaper. But also belt sanders, bench grinders, cardboard with polishing paste, and sandstone blocks.

There are so many methods that work well. It's a question of finding what works for you and a lot of practice.

Don't practice on your zwilling. Practice in something cheap and disposable.

The only thing that is true for all methods is to go from coarse to fine!

Stropping with leather is always advisable because it removes the micro burr. It's also pretty much the cheapest finishing method. Any piece of old leather and some polishing paste will do.

I may have to admit to sharp edge disease at this stage. I love sharpening and keeping tools whether they are chisels or kitchen knives razor edged.

Oh that was a misunderstanding, i was talking about the stone to reshape it with a tile and wet sandpaper, I never tried to sharpen a knive on sandpaper. my Zwillings only see the stones

Anybody have opportunity to handle the Ochsenkopf ILTIS axes and can say how the Canada and Europe model compare in use?

Can't be many people out there that have used all of them.

I've got the Universal Forestry axe 20 H-1407. Nice C60 steel

Oops my bad... i have a naniwa flatening stone for that purpose. Gotta try tile and paper.

I purposely let the cheaper stones go concave for my gransfors axes. I use a puck sharpener in the field though.

Has anyone used Wurth tools? I've got a couple of Wurth Zebra socket sets, 1/4 & 3/8

I have Some. Its allround decent stuff. I think they used to have own production and maybe still do but there's also a lot of rebranded and made in Asia amongst new wurth. I would scale them just under facom these days. Though the ratcheting wrenches are really nice.

A bit like mac I guess. Multiple oems under one brand.

My new arrival which I am happy with. Pretty much same design but much better all round than the pos made in China its replacing.

Miele still makes all stuff in Germany. On the other hand Bosch is now mostly Romania, for Europe at least.

Usually good quality but also a bit overpriced (except maybe their socket sets)
I think they used to have own production and maybe still do but there's also a lot of rebranded and made in Asia amongst new wurth.
They own Felo and a couple of screw manufacturers.
I bought a used beltsander for €200
Manufacturer is BGU
nice machine !!! :pimpflash:drool:

Hi My name is Rich and I live in Chichester, England. I picked up this 20 tooth ratchet at a boot sale and think that it may be snap-on, possibly 1940 s ? the only markings on it are A-59444. Would anyone be able to give me any more information.

That snap on looks like a long-handled version of the "ferret"...cool find.

If you want to use/keep it they can likely be upgraded to 30 teeth with a new rebuild kit.

Thank you both for your posts, the information was very useful and I am tempted to keep it as you can still feel that it is a quality item.

Thanks again, rich

Went to Wurth in Stade.

Nice man. I love those Knipex Cobras very much.
I hope you don't mind, but I clicked on the picture and it took me to a whole a lot of pictures of some serious serious tools, boy, that was invigorating to look at :drool:. I have a question though, how useful do you think is that Gedore 19 SKU-20 you have? I mean can it do anything more than a set of ratcheting wrenches can do?

I went back and did the same after reading your comment and you weren't kidding. That's a damn nice setup. Never seen so many SO ratchets in one place...

It was my first trip to Germany and it looked so nice, for sure not practical. They are nice however, ratchet is coarse but smooth. 16" cobras were only 34 euros, seemed like a good deal.

If money is of no issues (within reason) who makes the best fine tooth 1/4 and 3/8 quick release ratchet? Hazel /Stahwille / Gedor / Wera?

In about 50 years of working with the tools, I never thought a whole bunch about doing minute comparisons of different ratchets. I thought and still think that S-K stuff was just fine, and never affected my work, because I didn't have the time and interest to do comparisons that didn't really amount to anything. It never affected my income, and I think that it's a discussion between those who don't rely on ratchets to earn a living.

Frankly the ratchets you need to beat are TR72 or TRLF72, FR80, SR80 by snap on. Stahlwille probably comes closest to being a reasonable competitor. They have specials on TBS aachen. Check em out.

Thank you for suggesting Snap-On, completely overlooked them.

After you do the reading I would suggest to check the ratchets is person as they feeling varies from batch to batch, I.e . How smooth they are and the backdrag.

On 3/8 Hazet , Stahlwille and Gedore are most similar to backdrag but different teeth count, 72, 80 and 60, respectively.

I have the 3/8 Stahlwille and it is the size of1/4 of the others and very smooth so I use it instead of 1/4 in tight places

I also have the 3/8 Facom quick release which is really good and feels very strong so that is my 3/8 to go.

For 1/4 I would go for Gedore if 40 teeth is not a problem as it is the smoothest quite compact and feels good. The Gazette is very smooth but not QR and bulky. Stahlwille v compact with 80t but not so smooth. Facom I have also in 1/4 is very smooth but not QR and not slim. I have tested the Carolus Slim Sixty with 60t and it is very smooth and very slim, not sure about strength and reliability.

You could also look into Japanese Nepros, Tone, Koken.

From personal experience when tested the Proxon and Vigor ratchets they were very coarse and did not like them at but Carolus felt nice.

Wera feels nice cause is smooth but did not buy because I was told they give problems with their mechanism. No personal experience here.

I also have the older Stahlwille 1/2 inch with 60t and is very smooth but the mechanism sticks every time I undo a bolt and need smacking. The new one has 80t but if you also looking for a 1/2 inch make sure you try the ratchet to undo let's say the tyre bolt with not much force.

Now you need to the math, teeth + backdrag + strength - dimensions to find what you like[emoji1]

Don't forget after you have used your ratchets to post the details and your experience with them and other tools that may be interesting to other people.

All the best
