Gedore 250mm 1640801 locking extension to replace the 'universal' extension. I cannot get along with wobble extensions for general use. This time full price from a proper Gedore distributor so no excuses. Same issue, one of the recesses was not cut deep enough to lock onto the Gedore ratchet. Would not lock onto my Facom ratchet at all without a little fettling so it seems that Gedore socketery and Facom ratchets don't fit together well. I had the same issue with a Palmera extension on the Facom ratchet so this may be a common issue when mixing brands.

I've made a video of a visit to 'Toolfair' tradeshow in Manchester England. A virtual tour of sorts. It's a long vid at over 22 mins as there was a lot to see. I'm not generally a video maker but gave it a try as I thought it would be more interesting than photos.

Some tools are not strictly relevant to this thread and many are made in China but hopefully the vid shows some of the brands available to tradesmen/women here in the Old World UK and gives a general feel for the show.

May not be news to some but I was surprised to see NWS Milwaukee pliers and what looked to be Oplast Klein screwdrivers. The guy at the Milwaukee booth said they are really pushing hand tools this year. Also good to see some Bosch tools still made in Germany.

IOf course, USAG have now been bought out by Stanley, so expect quality to take a dive shortly, and Taiwanese stuff to replace the current offerings!

Stanley bought USAG in 2006, so I wouldn't expect anything at all to happen "shortly" to their quality. The only thing that's going to change is now the provincials are going to look down on their stuff.

Interesting. I have that same Facom ratchet and a vintage (from my grandfather) Gedore 1/2" AF socket set that I've filled out with a couple newer sockets. I don't recall noting an issue, but I'm not sure I've used them together. Will check tonight. I know Facom 1/2" sockets work just fine on a Gedore locking flex ratchet.

It was an Electrician/builder/plumber convention. I guess Facom is more for mechanics or they just had better places to be.

That seems standard for them. For example, here are 1/2" drive and 3/8" drive locking flex heads:

About half of the sockets don't lock onto my Facom QR ratchet.

I checked my 1/2" AF sockets on the same model Facom ratchet found the same: about half and half. That applies to both ones I bought this century and ones from my grandfather (1970s? 1980s?). My other 1/2" drive ratchet is not QR.

I picked up a couple L-BOXXes from Acme Tools (they're currently running a $20 off $100 Bosch promo). There isn't a G4 LS-BOXX, but the L-BOXX 3 (aka L-BOXX 238) they sent me was the new version. That was a nice surprise because I was curious about them. The sides definitely feel flimsier than the previous generation, but for my use (storing a Dremel and add-ons) it doesn't matter. It might be nice to be able to put an L-BOXX on top of it and still open the lid.

Thanks for doing that. Wonder if it's Facom or Gedore who are slightly off standard or if there actually is a ball/recess placement standard. Some fitting and some not shows inconsistency from Gedore. I'm used to Taiwan made sockets. I find that Taiwan generally have tool mass production down to very accurate tolerances. Still sold off my 1/2" Bahco sockets in favour of the Gedore though.

Thanks for giving me some idea of the vintage. This particular set was purchased from Germany but now resides in Tennessee.

Looks to be very similar to the 'Tite-Reach Tool.'

I saw that those were also released in MAC tools clothing as well. I haven't seen one in person yet, but they do look bulkier than the TiteReach.
The build quality of this SBD one looks a lot better though.

Three different mini bolt cutters from the different companies made in three different countries. The Knipex made in Germany, Gedore made in Austria, and Bahco made in Spain.

The all feel pretty much the same and work the same. I reach for the Knipex thanks to the longer handles providing better leverage, but I like the feel of the textured Gedore handles better. The Bahco cutters are thinner and made with a bit less material and weigh about 60 grams lighter than the Gedore (290g compared to 350g). Of course the Knipex are heavier than both, but that's not really fair considering they're the longer handle versions.

These are the longest I could find from some old world brands.

For many years, 15” or 18” were the “standard” sizes, and in many cases the only sizes available. It was only really firms such as Snap On, who historically offered a choice of 3 lengths, that made 24 inch available!

Unfortunately, while I appreciate and use Hazet and Stahlwille tools, the range of handles they offer lags way behind the range available from Snap On.

I’ve got to admit, it’s the 24 inch bar I always reach for first, but then I’m probably using it to undo a hub nut that hasn’t been shifted in a decade. Traditionally, you would probably have used 3/4 drive here, but on so many modern vehicles, a 3/4 drive socket won’t even fit!

Gedore 8092-160 TL Cable shears and 8210-200 TL Combination pliers.

I think 'TL' refers to dipped handles.



The 200mm combination pliers are (very subjectively and just going off first impressions) the nicest pliers I've owned. The dipped handles have a rough texture very similar to VBW/Stahlwille and Knipex Cobras. The pivot is smooth with minimal play and the jaws fall open from new though not quite as freely as Knipex pliers.



The satin grey finish feels very smooth. Looks to be easily scratched. Not sure what the coating is.



The edges of the jaws line up near perfectly.





Almost perfect but as I'm learning about Gedore there can be minor issues and here it's the tips of the jaws that are not cut straight.



Austria, Japan, China. The Gedore cable shears are the better finished of the three with no issues that I can see.







After a bit of use I find the King take noticeably less force than the other two to cut wire. The King have smoothed off edges that make them more pleasant to handle and feel a little less chucky.



The profile on the Gedore cutting edges is slightly different than the other two. The slightly more pointed profile translates into having to open the handles noticeably wider making them feel a little awkward.
